Teaching Major: English Language Arts
Standard 1: Eleventh/Twelfth Grade Level
RL.11-12.7
Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a
play, recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text.
Video 1:
Narrative 1: Before my classroom reaches the point of watching this video, I would have them read Macbeth
for themselves and determine their own interpretation of it. Then, once the classroom read Act V, I would
play this video in the classroom. After the video, I would have each individual student write a paragraph
comparing and contrasting their own interpretation of the text with the sock puppet video. The class could
then have a group discussion about what the students think the video did right and what the students think
the video was completely wrong about. I believe this will help my students fulfill the standard because it
allows them to create their own interpretation before being exposed to other versions. By using the video in
this way, the students must analyze the text to create an individualized interpretation.
Standard 2: Eleventh/Twelfth Grade Level
RL.11-12.3
Analyze how characterization, plot, setting, and other elements interact and contribute to the
development and complexity of a text
Video 2:
Narrative 2: Different from the last video, I would begin the assignment by watching this video. I think that
beginning with the video will help to refresh students’ memory of what exactly the elements in a story are,
and it will help students to see why those elements are important. Once the students watch the video and
have a good concept of the elements, I would have the students create an outline for a short story of their
own. Each student would need to develop characters, key plot points, and an exact setting the way they are
listed in the video. Once students have developed all of the points from the video, I would have the students
put them together in a short story for a grade. I believe this will help the students fulfill the standard by
having them interact closely with all of the different elements that go into creating a text, and I feel it will
bring the students closer to the importance of the elements because they are able to create something of their
own.
