This document describes a test method for measuring the flowability of grout mortar using a P-type funnel. The test uses a specialized funnel apparatus with measurements defined. Mortar is poured into the funnel and the flow time is measured as it exits the funnel outlet. Flowability is represented by the measured flow time, with shorter times indicating better flowability. Test reports should include details on date, weather, mixing conditions, materials used, proportions, batch number, temperature, and measured flow time.

Test Method for flowability of grout mortar for prepacked concrete

(P-type funnel method)

(JSCE-F 521-1999)

1. Scope
This standard describes a test method for
flowability of grout mortar for prepacked concrete
using a P-type funnel.

2. Test Apparatus
The test apparatus to be used shall be as follows:
a) The funnel to be used shall be made from
cast aluminum, which has a top-end inside
diameter of 178 mm and a bottom-end inside
diameter of 13 mm and whose funnel section
has a height of 192 mm and an inside
diameter of 13 mm. A 38-mm long output
pipe is provided (1). The funnel shall be
capable of measuring 1725 mL sample by
means of a point gauge installed on the
funnel side wall.

Note (1) This may be made from stainless steel.

b) A table to support the funnel and a stopwatch shall be provided.

3. Test Method
The test method shall be as described below.
a) Support the funnel perpendicularly on the table.
b) Pour the sample mortar into the funnel. Allow an adequate amount of mortar to flow out
of the outlet, plug the outlet with a finger, and pour the mortar until its surface is above
the end of point gauge installed on the funnel side wall. Release the plugging finger
slightly to allow mortar to flow out slightly at a time until the mortar surface agrees with
the end of point gauge.
c) Remove the finger to allow mortar to run out. Measure with the stopwatch the flow time
period from the beginning to the end of mortar outflow through the outlet.

4. Test Results
The flowability is represented as a flow time from the funnel.

5. Report
The report shall be made on the following points:
a) Date
b) Weather
c) Temperature
d) Mixing conditions
e) Material quality
f) Mortar mix proportion
g) Batch No.
h) Mortar temperature
i) Flow time
