Time &work (Lofoya - 15 Important Math)

The document provides 5 math word problems with solutions. The first problem involves two workers, A and B, who completed half a job in certain hours. They then worked together for more hours and completed an additional fraction of the job. The question asks how many hours it would take B to complete the job alone. The second problem involves two people, A and B, borrowing a tractor for a number of days, with A plowing a certain number of acres per day and B plowing a different number. The third problem involves two lights flashing at different rates and asks how many times they will flash together in an hour. The fourth problem involves three taps - two that fill a tank and one that empties it - and asks the

01. Ram starts working on a job and works on it for 12 days and completes 40% of the work.

To help him complete the work, he employs Ravi and together they work for another 12 days

and the work gets completed. How much more efficient is Ram than Ravi?

#Solution::

40% work= 12 days

=> 100% work = 12*100/40= 30 days

60% work (Ravi+Ram)=12 days

=> 100%= 1200/60= 20

Ravi can do the work in = 1/20-1/30

= 1/60

So, Ravi:Ram= 1/60:1/30

= 1:2[Time]

= 2:1 [Eff.]

More= (2-1)= 1
%= 1*100/1= 100%[ Answer.]

02.

A and B can do a piece of work in 10 days. B and C in 15 days. C and A in 20 days. ALL of

them work at it for 2 days, then A leaves. After 2 days of this, B also leaves.C will complete

rest of the work in how many days?

#Solution::

LCM of 10,15 &20= 60

A+B= 6

B+C= 4

C+A= 3

2*(A+B+C)= 13

=> A+B+C= 6.5

So,

A= 2.5

B= 3.5

C= 0.5

Atq

2*6.5+4*2+0.5*x= 60
=> 0.5*x= 39

=> x= 78 days [Answer.]

03. 06. A cylindrical overhead tank is filled by two pumps P1 and P2. P1 can fill the tank in 8

hr while P2 can fill the tank in 12 hr. There is a pipe P3 which can empty the tank in 8 hr.

Both the pumps are opened simultaneously. The supervisor of the tank, before going out on a

work, sets a timer to open P3 when the tank is half filled so that the tank is exactly filled up by

the time he is back. Due to technical fault P3 opens when the tank is one-third filled. If the

supervisor comes back as per the plan what percent of the tank is till empty?

#Solution::

Let, total Capacity of tank = 24 L (By LCM)

A= 3L/hr(Fill)

B= 2 L/hr(Fill)

C= 3 L/hr (Empty)

Half tank full means= 24/2= 12 L by (A+B)= 12/(3+2)= 2 hr 48 min

Remain 12 L by (A+B+C)= 12/(3+2-3)= 6 hr

Total time = 8 hr 48 min[ First condition]

But, Unfortunately 3rd pipe open when the tank is 1/3 rd full.

So, 1/3 rd full means= 1/3*24= 8 L

Remain= 16 L

Now, 8 L full in= 8/5 = 1 hr 36 min

Time at hand = [8 hr 48 min- 1 hr 36 min]

= 36/5 hr

Now, [3+2-3]= 2 unit fiil in = 1 hr

So, 36/5 hr can fill= (36/5)*2= 72/5= 14.4 L

Empty = (16 -14.4)= 1.6 L

% Empty= (1.6*100)/16= 10%

04. A and B working together can finish a job in T days. If A works alone and completes the

job, he will take T+5 days. If B works alone and completes the same job, he will take T+45

days. What is T?

#Solution::

A= T+5
B= T+45

ATQ,

1/(T+5)+1/(T+45)= 1/T

=> (T+45+T+5)*T= (T+5)*(T+45)

=> 2T^2-T^2-50T-50T= 225

=> T^2= 225

=> T= 15

Shortcut::

T^2= ab

=>T= ab= (45*5)= 15

Shortcut formula from below::

1/(T+a)+ 1/(T+b)= 1/T

=> (T+b+T+a)*T= (T+a)*(T+b)

=> 2T^2+Ta+Tb= T^2+Ta+Tb+ab

=> T^2= ab

=> T= (ab)

05. Three professors Dr. Gupta, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Singh are evaluating answer script of a

subject. Dr. Gupta is 40 more efficient than Dr. Sharma, who is 20 more efficient than Dr.

Singh. Dr. Gupta takes 10 days less than Dr. Sharma to complete the evaluation work. Dr.

Gupta starts the evaluation work and works for 10 days and then Dr. Sharma takes over. Dr.

Sharma evaluates for next 15 days and then stops. In how many days, Dr. Singh can complete

the remaining evaluation work?

Solution::

Gupta:Sharma= 140:100= 7:5= 42:30

Sharma:Singha= 120:100= 6:5= 30:25

Gupta:Sharma:Singh= 42:30:25[Eff.]

Gupta:Sharma:Singh= 1/42:1/30:1/25[Time]

= 25:35:42[Time]

Now, ATQ,

10/25+15/35+x/42= 1

=> x/42= 6/35

=> 35x= 42*6

=> x= (42*6)/35= 36/5= 7.2 days [Answer.]

section (0.3m x 0.2m) at 20 kmph. In what time will the water level be 8?

#Solution::

200*150*8= 0.3*0.2*20000*T

=> T= 200 hrs[Answer.]

02. Anil does a work in 90 days, Bittu in 40 days and Chintu in 12 days. They work one after

another for a day each, starting with Anil followed by Bittu and then by Chintu. If the total

wages received are Rs 360 and Anil, Bittu, Chintu share them in the ratio of the work done,

find their respective individual wages.

#Solution:

LCM of 90,40,12= 360

Anil= 4

Bittu = 9

Chintu= 30

They work 1 day each, start with anil.

(4+9+30)*8= 344 unit in = 24 days

So, everyone work 8 days each.

In 25th day Anil work alone= 344+4= 348

In 26 th day= 348+9= 357 unit done.

Remain = 3 unit by chintu

So, Anil:Bittu:Chintu= (9*4):(9*9):(8*30+3)= 36:81:243

Since the wages total = 360

So, Share of Anil:Bittu:Chintu= 36:81:243

[Answer.]

03. There are 12 pipes attached to a tank. Some of them are fill pipes and some are drain

pipes. Each of the fill pipes can fill the tank in 12 hours, while each of the drain pipes will take

24 hours to drain a full tank completely. If all the pipes are kept open when the tank was

empty, it takes 2 hours for the tank to overflow. How many of these pipes are drain pipes?

#Let, inlet pipe= n

Outlet pipe= [12-n]

Atq,

n/12-(12-n)/24= 1/2

=>2* (2n-12+n)= 24

=> 6n= 48

=> n= 8

Drain pipe= [12-8]= 4 pipes[Answer.]

and then B joined to work with A for another 2 days only. In how many days will A alone

build up the remaining part of the structure?

#Solution:

LCM of 8 & 3= 24

A= 3

B= 8

Atq,

3*4+(3-8)*2+x*3= 24
=> 12-10+3x= 24

=> 3x= 22

=> x= 22/3[Answer.]

05. In Nuts And Bolts factory, one machine produces only nuts at the rate of 100 nuts per

minute and needs to be cleaned for 5 minutes after production of every 1000 nuts.

Another machine produces only bolts at the rate of 75 bolts per minute and needs to cleaned

for10 minutes after production of every 1500 bolts.If both the machines start production at

the same time, what is the minimum duration required for producing 9000 pairs of nuts and

bolts?

#Solution::

Nut machine produce= 100 nuts per min

1000 nut time taken= 1000/100+5= 15 min

8000 nut taken= 15*8= 120 min

And remain 1000 nuts in = 10 min.

Total time taken nut machine= 130 min.

And bolt machine 1500 bolt in = 1500/75+10= 20+10= 30 min

7500 bolt in = 30*5= 150 min

And R= 1500 bolt in 20 min

So, total time taken= (150+20)= 170 min..

So, Minimum time=170 min [Answer.]

01. Two workers A and B manufactured a batch of identical parts. A worked for 2 hours and

B worked for 5 hours and they completed half the job. Then they worked together for another

3 hours and they had to do (1/20)th of the job. How many hours time does B take to complete

the job, if he worked alone?

#Solution::

2A+5B= 1/2_________(1)

3A+3B= 1-(1/20+1/20)= 9/20_________(2)

6A+15B= 3/2
6A+6B= 18/20

________________

9B= 3/2-18/20

=> 9B = (30-18)/20= 12/20

=> B= 12/180= 1/15

So, 1/15========1

=> 1=========15 days [Answer.]

Alternatives:

(4A+10B)= 1_______(1)

And,

3(A+B)= 9/20

=> 60*(A+B)= 9

=> 60*(A+B)/9= 1______[2]

From (1) &(2)

60*(A+B)= 9*(4A+10B)

=> 24A= 30B

=> A:B= 5:4

Atq,

4*5+10*4= 4*D

=> 60= 4*D

=> D= 15 days.
