Objectives
Objective of this module is to provide you with an understanding of what
multiphase flow is, be familiar with multiphase terminology, and know some
of the benefits of using multiphase metering technology.

Multiphase terminology
Fluid - Oil, Gas, Water or mixtures of these. Gas
WaterOil
Volume flow rate - The volume of fluid flowing through the
cross-section of a conduit in unit time at the pressure and
temperature prevailing in that section.
Water cut (WC) - The water volume flow rate, relative to the total liquid volume flow rate
(oil and water), both converted to volumes at standard pressure and temperature. The
WC is normally expressed as a percentage.
Phase - In particular, the term refers to oil, gas or water in a mixture of any number
of the three.
Phase flow rate - The amount of one phase of a multiphase flow flowing through the
cross section of a conduit in unit time.

Oil- / Water- / High GVF flow
Oil-continuous multiphase flow:
A multiphase flow of oil/gas/water characterised in that the
water is distributed as water droplets surrounded by oil.
Electrically, the mixture acts as an insulator.

History of Roxar Multiphase meters
1982: BP participated as sponsor in the development, later joined by
Statoil, Conoco, TFE, and Amerada Hess
1994: First commercial delivery in the North Sea
1995: First subsea Multiphase Meter delivered
2001: Two Multiphase Meters become one
2003: New subsea meter design introduced
2003: Emerson - Daniel hand over Megra to Roxar
2005: A total of more then 800 Meters sold, of which 120 are for
subsea
2009: Roxar MPFM 2600 launched to the market 10th of February 2009
2011: More than 1400 meter sold

The Roxar Multiphase meter - Advantages
Get more out of the reservoir
• Optimising the production
• Early warning
• Corrective actions
• Use test separator capacity to increase
production
• Weight and space saving
• Real-time and continuous monitoring
• Simple maintenance compared to
conventional separator technology
• Easy to install
Slide 13
The Roxar Multiphase Meter - Advantages
Tying in new fields and satellites to existing offshore installations.
– (Shell UK Expro, Gannet Project, reported CAPEX savings of £ 10 million by installing two Roxar MPFM)
Excluding the test separator on new installations.
– (Statoil, Gullfaks Satellites Project reported CAPEX savings of NOK 60 million by using two Roxar MPFM instead of a new
test separator )
Timesaving well test, and continuous monitoring of the impact of choke tuning.
– (Proved that Roxar MPFM can test four wells in 60 minutes, Statoil Gullfaks B )
Early detection of water/gas break through in a well.
– (Offering enhanced recovery. )
Continuous monitoring of the production.
– (Optimising the reservoir drainage to enhance recovery. )
Simple maintenance compared to conventional separator technology.
– (Estimated by offshore operators to 50% vs. conventional test separators)
