Preventing Osmosis in GRP Yachts

Osmosis is a common problem in fibreglass boats caused by water ingress into the hull laminate. This allows reactive impurities in the resin to form acids that break down the resin over time, causing blistering. To treat osmosis, the gelcoat is removed and the affected laminate areas are sanded back. Then an epoxy barrier coating like Gelshield Pluse is applied to separate the hull from water and prevent further osmosis. For prevention, applying a thick epoxy coating to the hull before signs of osmosis appear can delay its onset.
