Prometheus Bound: Tech & Society's Chains

The documentary Prometheus Bound relates the Greek myth of Prometheus to the shackles facing Philippine society in the development of science and technology. It argues that the country's colonial past led to an education system and practices that maintained the backward state of the economy and hindered technological advancement. While the country appears high-tech on the surface, it remains dependent on imports and foreign ownership. The government also contributes through underfunding research and outdated facilities, pushing scientists to work overseas. However, there is hope if Filipinos unite behind developing the country and its science and technology collectively rather than individually.

PROMETHEUS BOUND a documentary that ingeniously relates the famed story of

Prometheus in Greek Mythology to signify the shackles that our society are facing,
relating to the development of science and technology. This centers on the
unvarying social status of the people and the backward state of growth. The
Advocates of Science and Technology (AGHAM) combines personal insights plus
scientific evidence to demonstrate how our science and technology come about
this state and how we can help in the progressive development of our country and
contribute in the advancement of science and technology.

Prior to watching this video, we were told to read an essay titled 'Ang Lisyang
Edukasyon ng mga Pilipino' and from what Ive watched, it further reinforced the
idea that one of the root causes of the backward state progress of the economy is
because of the historical development of our country. We were colonialized by
outlanders in the past where they've enforced their ideals and culture to us
Filipinos. We remained a prisoner of the system and laws they implemented upon
us that was only applicable during that time and situation, and most importantly
for their gain. Our education and practices exemplifies this. We continued to apply
this practices, hence it caused the backward state of our economy which directly
affected the advancement of our science and technology.

It's dismaying that our economy has become like this, we have shallow concept
about development and high technology. At first glance you may be fooled to
think that we become high-tech but once you take a deeper look, things still
haven't changed. We still lack the industries that we need to provide for our
countries needs. We remained import dependent and export oriented which was
further worsened by globalization. We remained as assemblers instead of
manufacturers. Most of our large companies, which amounts to 1 %, are owned
by foreigners. Most of the state-of-the-art equipments that our scientists used are
imported from another country. We have no self reliance and most of our needs
are from foreign countries.
The government whereby we placed our hope that they will induce change, also
plays a big role in the state of our economy. Research in our country isn't really
extensive for our researchers only have limited budget allocated upon them by
the government and most of their equipment and facilities are outdated. That is
why most of the scientist and engineers in our country choose to work overseas
while some are working in other fields and don't practice their profession. This
does not only apply in scientists and engineers even in situations in our everyday
life,an example is our teachers in Senior High, they teach a subject that is way out
of their field of expertise. Another one is that we have wide range of fields but
most of these are private properties. We likewise have the resources except that
we have no proper way to maximize this considering that there are no programs
intended for the development of agricultural research. I find the statement 'In the
modern world the control of our society is up to those who have the power and
authority' truly fitting for our situation (AGHAM 2014).

Similarly i believe that there is hope, we have the power to free ourselves from
the shackles constraining us all we need is unity. Unity to stand for one goal. Unity
for the collective development of our country and and our science and
technology. Unity for everyone and not only for ourselves.

In conclusion I would strongly recommend AGHAM's documentary to every

Pilipino that I know of for a start because I think this truly demonstrates the
situation that Philippines is facing up until now.
