REVIEW
ADDING OPPOSITES:
When you add opposites the sum is always zero.
Therefore, opposites are called additive inverses.

Rules For Addition of Two Integers

Concept Explanation Examples

Additive Inverses The sum of an integer and its

2 + ( -2 ) = 0
(opposites) opposite is always zero.
(ZAP)
The sum of
2 positive integers is always
positive.

The sum of 2+2=4

Adding Like Signs
2 negative integers is always
negative.
SAME SIGNS SUM
(SSS) To add 2 integers with (-2) + (-2) = -4
the same signs:
1) Keep the sign and
2) Add the numerals
ignoring the signs
To add 2 integers with
different signs:
1) Take the sign from the (-4) + 3 = -1
integer which is farther
Adding Different Signs
from zero
(the integer with the
7 + (- 4) = 3
Different Signs Difference largest absolute value)
(DSD) 2) Subtract the numerals
ignoring the signs

Adding With Zero

(AZ) When one addend is zero, 8+0=8
the sum is the other addend 0 + ( - 9 ) = -9

LESSON 1: SUBTRACTING ONE TO TWO DIGIT INTEGERS
WITH SAME SIGN
TO SUBTRACT INTEGERS…
ADD THE OPPOSITE!
You rewrite the problem:
1) Leave the number before the subtraction exactly the same.
2) Change the subtraction to addition.
3) Change the number that follows the subtraction sign to its opposite.
4) Add by following the rules of addition to get the correct answer.

LESSON 2: SUBTRACTING ONE TO TWO DIGIT INTEGERS
WITH DIFFERENT SIGN

Rules for Subtracting Integers:

1. Keep the first integer
2. Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign
3. Change the integer after the subtraction sign, now an addition
sign to its opposite

4. Follow the addition rules for adding with the same sign or
different signs

Example 1: -4–6

-4+6 Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign

- 4 + (-6) Change 6 to its opposite, -6

-10 The answer is -10 because both integers have the same
sign

Example 2: 25 – ( - 6 )

25 + (-6) Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign

25 + (6) Change -6 to its opposite, 6

31 The answer is 31 because both integers have the same sign

LESSON 3: SUBTRACTING TWO TO THREE DIGIT INTEGERS
WITH SAME SIGN
To subtract integers:
A. Leave the number before the subtraction exactly the same.
B. Change the number that follows the subtraction sign to its opposite.
C. Change the subtraction to addition.
D. Add by following the rules of addition to get the correct answer.

Illustrative example 1: 123 – 58

Step A: Leave the number before the subtraction exactly the same.
123 – 58
Step B: Change the number that follows the subtraction sign to its opposite.
123 – (-58)
Step C: Change the subtraction to addition
123 + (-58)
Step D: Add by following the rules of addition to get the correct answer.
123 + (-58) = 65

Illustrative example 2: - 123 – (- 58)

Step A: Leave the number before the subtraction exactly the same.
- 123 – (- 58)
Step B: Change the number that follows the subtraction sign to its opposite.
- 123 – (58)
Step C: Change the subtraction to addition.
- 123 + (58)
Step D: Add by following the rules of addition to get the correct answer.
