On approaching the o ce of a popular lm director in the city of Kochi, I was asked to audition for a role following which I got to
play a part in a production whose shoot was scheduled to begin in May 2018. During this time, I spent hours studying how the
editor ensured the right cut & created continuity, helped in foleying and partook in a lot of other processes that came together to
create one single output – a movie. I did have my share of fun & enjoyed being identi ed in malls & taken sel es with. On the
contrary, I realized that I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed theatre; the character was broken at the source & sewn up
together into life at the editor’s table. Characters on stage never paused for a retake or spoke parts of a monologue in

interruptions – maybe I could consider this as a way to make money in a way that I would not enjoy but for now, I intend to focus

Essay Details
This essay is a space for us to know and understand you better as a person.

I am as old as this new millennium is. My father who is currently a lyricist penning songs for Malayalam and Tamil movies had
been an accountant when I was born. My mother had just begun her work as a clerk at the State Public Commission then. Being
the son of a government o cial, I have never had to face the sort of di culties many of my fellow classmates faced. I realized
how much of a signi cant role this played out in my life the day that my classmate who has a physical disability similar to that of
mine(Spina Bi da)had to be rushed to the hospital because he had not been receiving treatment for a while – his father had lost
his job when the company decided to cut costs and therefore they could not a ord to provide for his treatment anymore. Ever
since, I have been conscious of my own privileges and have consequently made several changes in my personality and choices. I
have also tried to instill these values in my brother to whom I am like a father gure, I am older than him by nine years and our
relationship is unlike that between most siblings,still special.

Over these eighteen years, I have had the fortune of only facing problems that required a combination of rm resolve and a little
bit of personal sacri ce to make them disappear. With the exception of occasional episodes of blinding pain that I get due to my
condition, tragedies have been rare – I have learnt lessons but have not yet had to pay a huge price in exchange for them. The
two months my team and I had spent preparing for the production of the annual school drama had been hard on us as twelfth
graders – trying to get the balancing act of preparing su ciently well for the board examinations and executing a production with
the intention of raising the bar higher than where our seniors had it left o at right. I was assigned the task of writing the script
for the performance – my friends thought of it this way, my father was a lyricist so prose should come easily to me. I took this up

as a challenge, not letting them know that I was very uncomfortable with their kind of reasoning. The subject that I chose to write
on was the spate of political killings in college campuses of the neighboring district of Hapur. I had named the production ‘Purple
and Gold’ – the banner colors of the two prominent student-parties in most campuses across Kerala. Two weeks of writing, a
month and a half of rehearsals later, our production was ready to be staged. It had worked. We received overwhelming
responses from our teachers, non-teaching sta and the entire student body. The leading regional daily had covered the event
and had published it the following day in print. I recall the period of two months that preceded that day and the few days that
followed it with a sense of accomplishment and joy. It was a team e ort, I did not forget to pat myself on the back though.

My parents have allowed me to choose a subject and university of my own choice. I have decided to pursue my undergraduate
degree in English from an esteemed University. By doing this I know that my competence as a writer will greatly improve. I look
forward to an invigorating academic experience at Ashoka University if I am able to make it through the admissions process and i
I am unable to do so, I hope to nd a place in an institution that I would equally be delighted to be a part of.

I was born with a condition called Spina Bi da. Doctors had informed my family that I could not be cured of it, but, it could be
managed to a degree that it would not determine the person who I should grow up to become. I believe that I have been the
master of my own destiny till date, albeit the concern about the range of opportunities available to me I could excel in. As an
extension of this, I would like to say that in a world where people nd it hard to make a choice because there's just so much to
choose from, I live better. Although this may be the case, my physical disposition may be a little mentally distressing to the people
around me. I hope that there are provisions and committees that can help me and the people around me to learn equally at
Ashoka.
