Statistics Lesson Plan for Grade 11

This document outlines a lesson plan for a statistics class in the Philippines. The objectives are to identify sampling distributions when sampling without replacement and calculate related statistics like the mean and standard deviation. The lesson will involve an activity using student weights to find the distribution of sample means without replacement. It will also cover concepts like sample space, random variables, and constructing sampling distributions. For evaluation, students will solve problems calculating means, variances, and expected values for sampling distributions.

Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability 11

Date: February 11, 2019
Section: Crystal
Time Frame: 60 mins.

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify sampling distributions of statistics (sample mean and sample
proportion) when sampling is conducted without replacement.
Subtask:
Calculate the mean (or expected value) and standard deviation (or
standard error) of the sampling distribution of the sample mean (and
sample proportion) when sampling is conducted without replacement

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

1. Topic: Sampling Without Replacement
2. Reference: CG, TG, Statistics Books
3. Materials: Laptop, Projector

III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Routine Activities
1.1 Prayer
1.2 Greetings
1.3 Checking of Attendance
1.4 Energizer

2. Review
- Sampling Distribution of the Sample Mean

3. Motivation/Presentation of Lesson
- Survey Estimates of Voting Preferences

B. Development of Lesson
1. Activity
-Activity on finding the distribution of sample mean using the student’s
weights as the population by using sampling without replacement.

2. Analysis
- How was the sample variance different in sampling with replacement
from sampling without replacement?
3. Abstract/Generalization
- What is a sample space?
- What is a random variable?
- How is a discrete random variable different from a continuous random
variable?

4. Application

- Random samples of size 2 are drawn, without replacement, from the finite
population 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, and 4.
a) Assuming that the 42 possible samples are all equally likely to occur,
construct the sampling distribution of 𝑋̅.
𝜎² 𝑁−𝑛
b) Verify that 𝐸(𝑋̅) = µ and Var(𝑋̅) = 𝑛 √𝑁−1
8
c) Between what two values would you expect at least of the sample
9
mean to fall?

IV. EVALUATION

1. The random variable X, representing the number of cherries in a cherry puff, has the
following probability distribution:

𝑿 𝟒 𝟓 𝟔 𝟕

𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 0.2 0.4 0.3 0.1

(a) Find the mean µ and the variance 𝜎² of 𝑋.

(b) Find the 𝐸(𝑋̅) and the Var(𝑋̅) for random samples of 36 cherry puffs.

V. ASSIGNMENT:

1. Given the population 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 7, find the mean and standard

deviation for the sampling distribution of means for samples of size 4 selected
at random without replacement.
