How to Set Up an
Xbox One S
Step 1: Unboxing the Xbox One S console
An Xbox One S bundle includes:
1. Xbox One S Console
2. Power Cord
3. Xbox One S Controller
4. Two AA Batteries
5. One HDMI Cable
6. Optional Vertical Stand
7. Documentation
Step 2: Positioning the console
In order to prevent the console from overheating, it must be placed on the stable surface that
allows for it to be ventilated.
Keep away from direct heat sources and avoid putting objects near the console itself.
The following are examples of poor placement and good placement.

The console may be placed horizontally or vertically, however a stand is required to place the
console vertically.

Step 3: Connecting the console to your TV
The Xbox One S includes an HDMI cable that may be used for an HDMI compatible TV or a HDTV.
1. Turn your Xbox Console to
the back.
2. Connect the HDMI cable to
the HDMI OUT port on your
console on the far left.
3. Connect the other end of the
HDMI cable to your TV.

Note: If the HDMI cable is
not long enough. You may
purchase a “HDMI premium
Certified Cable” of an
appropriate length to fit your
needs. If you need a cable
that is 50 feet long, it is
recommended to purchase an
“Active High-Speed HDMI
Cable”.
If you have a 4K TV, please check your TV’s instruction manual or manufacturer’s website to verify
which HDMI cable to use.
o Note: 4K TVs support 4K at 60 Hz on only one HDMI input.
If you want to display content in 4K you TV must support 4K at 60Hz resolution.
To display HDR content your TV must support the HDR10 content.
Remember to check your TV’s instruction manual or manufacturer’s website to verify which settings
need to be enabled to display 4K or HDR content.
Step 4: Connecting your set-top box to the console
(optional)
Note: If you do not have cable or satellite
TV, skip this step.
1. Disconnect the HDMI cable from
your TV that connects to the set-top box.
2. Connect the cable into the HDMI IN
port on your console located on the far
right on the back of your console.

Step 5: Connecting your console to a router or
modem (for wired connection only)
The Xbox One S console can be connected to wireless internet or to a wireless router or modem to
access internet.
If you would prefer to connect wirelessly, skip this step.
o Use an Ethernet cable to connect a router or modem to the networking port on the right side of
the back of your console.
Step 6: Connecting the console to a Kinect sensor
(optional)
In order to use an Xbox One Kinect Sensor, you need an Xbox Kinect adaptor.
o The adaptor allows for the Xbox One to connect to the Kinect sensor.

Step 7: Connecting a USB 3.0 external storage
device (optional)
You may use a USB to store games, apps and console settings for the Xbox One S.
o These are the requirements for the external storage device:
Must have a USB 3.0 connection.
Have at least 256GB of storage.
Have a partition, which drives usually have already.
There are three USB 3.0 ports on the Xbox One S console, one in the front and two in the back.
Step 8: Plugging in the power cord
Plug the power cord to the most far left port on the back of the Xbox One S console.
Plug the other end into an electrical outlet

Now, you may turn on the device by clicking the Xbox Logo corresponding to the number 2 in
the picture!
Note: Number 1 is the eject button to eject a disc from the console. Discs will insert
automatically.

Intended Audience
The targeted audience is for beginners of all ages. The instructions were written for a general
audience who may not have been familiar with using any gaming system or how to use it with a TV.
For those who are not technologically proficient, this instructional pamphlet should allow them to
understand and broaden their knowledge. The instructions are short and to the point that makes it
easier for the user. There are many optional steps that can be added and used to the Xbox One S and
the instructions highlight these points and allow the user to know what they can do for their most
optimal experience.
