Overstrikes provide equally clear evidence, though less p r e c s e . T h e issue

Important for the eariiet stages of the coinage is the evidence of weight stan-

of which the position is not determined by the hoards according to this pattern.

considerably over the years, and their development sometimes enables issues to
be placed i n their correct order. F o r instance, C . M a r i u s Capito's system of
control-marks is clearly based on a misunderstanding of that of P . Crepusius, 3
the Homan coinage has been shown to have begun during or shortly before the
PyirhicTWar, and die didrachm coinage as a whole fits intelligibly into d i e period

it seems p e r v a s e to date the creation of the denarius system at any other time

gests a late rather than an early date (contra,- A . Alfoldi, Mélanges... Cârcopino, 25).
- 2. C O S here stands for P R O C O S .
3. These two Issues share some obverse dies.
4. T h i s issue clearly originates froöi Octavian—compare his earlier issue C . C A E S A R C O S
PONT AVG.
5. "The date of thisTssue (despite the absence of I I I V I R R P C from the legends) and its attri-
bution to Octavian are jmade certain by its identity in style with the issue of Q. Salvius.
6. See T . V . Buttrey, piusN ix, 1960, 95·
7. F o r a genuine example of this issue, not plated, see G . . M a z z i n i , Monete imperiali
romane i , 49.
8. N o satisfactory arrangement exists of. these issues of Octavian. As a group\ theymSj^ be
regarded as running between c. 34 B . c . and 13 August 29 B . C .
(a) T h e meaiiing of the types is equivocal und the legends consist simply of the name of
Octavian. I n both these respects the group separates itself sharply from the issues of
Octavian as I I I V I R and as I M P V I I , the latter presumably struck at the time of the triumphs
during 13-15 August-29^ B.c.
(b) T h e issue of Scarpus with Victory on a globe (CRR, nos.uSi-^^élynolater than
30 B . C . (the supposed issue of Scarpus for Octavian as Augustus is a fiction), seems to copy
the issue with C A E S A R D I V I F; and similar type (RIC i , Augustus, nos. 27=4).
(c) I t is improbable that, Augustus struck no coinage at all between c. 34 B . c . and the time
of his triumphs.
N O T E S *ΓΟ TA5LES
(J) T h e evidence of die hoards strongly suggests that the issues with I M P C A E S A R

pcrttda&ibtrij^^ o f M ^ Antony ^ S c r a ^ hoards contain only the first, some only
the second. I n the Vigattchoard," the-Legionary denarii of M'. Antony are considerably less
V o r n than scene of die denarii with I M F C A E S A R and C A E S A R D I V I F . T h e natural
inference is that diese werè-struck earlier, and it cannot be argued against t h s inference that
theXegionary denarii of M . Antony did not circulate normally. T h e y did.

Cistophoric issues of Augustus—for these, see C . H . V. Sutherland (forthcoming).
Provfccial bronzelssues (RIC i , Augustus, nos. 49-55 and 35^-60).
C A E S A R / A V G V S T with candelabrum (RIÇ i , Augustus, no. 372)—unlike^anjc other
issue of Augustus and thus of very uncertain attribution. Its presence in the Terranova
^Pausania and Ambenay hoards suggests a date before 12 B.c, and a western mint.
Quadrantes of Silius, Annius, Lamia and of Pulcher, Regulus, Taurus (RIC i , Augustus,
nos. 180-5)—they belong in the years after 10 «.c.

The earliest phase of the denarius coinage comprises two anonymous issues from the mint of
Rome and numerous issues, jnoetly signed, but sometimes anonymous, from military mints
outside Rome. Although all these issues are.contemporary* the eleven hoards which contain
only anonymous issues are placed togetherfirstforche sak t of convenience. They are followed
by the hoards which contain signed issues fromrmäitary mintsr-Thefirstgroup of these con-
sists of three hoards of victoriati and the second group consists of seven hoards of victoriati,
four of denarii or quinarii, and six of bronze coins. The [Pisa hoard stands by itself as the last
before the beginning of the sequence of signed issues jfirom the mint of Rome. Thefirstof
these appears in the Paestunj-hoarcL

The following four hoards display about the same amount of wear as the victoriati in the
v
Città Sant'Angelo hoard (no. 129) and were clearly deposited some time after the date of
the latest coins in them. Since, therefore, they cannot be regarded as providing evidence for
the arrangement of the coinage, they are placed together as the latest victoriatus boards.

It is impossible, to establish exactly, how many: coins of each type were foundJrhe4atest-
publication does not take account of a small number of coins mentioned in the first
publication and of a slightly larger number in the second. But since thèse discrepan-
cies do not affect the picture of a sequence of coins going down to 2 B.c., the figures
from the latest publication are given here unaltered.
