Waveguides Assignment

The document is a group assignment from the Electronics Engineering Department of the Technological Institute of the Philippines on the topic of waveguides. It includes objectives to explain the basic theory of operation and construction of a waveguide. It then provides details on what waveguides are, the frequencies they are used at, how they are constructed, the behavior of electromagnetic waves within them, how waves propagate, the skin effect, transverse modes, and the dominant mode of operation. Members of the group and the instructor are also listed.

1. What are waveguides
-A waveguide is a special form of transmission line consisting of a
hollow, metal tube. The tube wall provides distributed inductance,
while the empty space between the tube walls provide distributed
capacitance.
-There are different types of waveguides for each type of wave. The
original and most common meaning is a hollow conductive metal pipe
used to carry high frequency radio waves, particularly microwaves.
2. At what frequencies waveguides are used?
-Waveguides are practical only for signals of extremely high
frequency, where the wavelength approaches the cross-sectional
dimensions of the waveguide. Below such frequencies, waveguides are
useless as electrical transmission lines.
3. How are waveguides constructed?
-Typically waveguide is made of brass, copper, silver, aluminum, or
any metal that has low bulk resistivity. It is possible to use metals with
poor conductivity characteristics, if the interior walls are properly
plated. There are many ways to form waveguide structures. The
simplest procedure is to start with stock waveguide and flanges, do
some bending, then weld, braze or solder on the flanges. This is not
practical for more complicated structures such as combiners,
couplers and filters. With the increasing need in industry to go further
into the millimeter microwave spectrum, the fabrication of complex
waveguide structures presents a challenging problem.
4. Describe the behavior of electromagnetic waves in waveguide?
-A waveguide is a structure that guides waves, such as electromagnetic
waves or sound, with minimal loss of energy by restricting expansion
to one dimension or two. There is a similar effect in water waves
constrained within a canal, or guns that have barrels which restrict
hot gas expansion to maximize energy transfer to their bullets.
Without the physical constraint of a waveguide, wave amplitudes
decrease according to the inverse square law as they expand into
three dimensional space. There are different types of waveguides for
each type of wave. The original and most common meaning is a hollow
conductive metal pipe used to carry high frequency radio waves,
particularly microwaves.
5. How are electromagnetics wave propagated in a waveguide?
-Waveguides are structures that guide waves such as Electromagnetic
or Sound waves. The geometry of these structures allow them to confine
the waves within them and thereby the waves propagate along the
waveguide with no or minimal loss of energy. This allows waveguides to
act as mediums of propagation which can carry information. In the
case of waveguides used for carrying electromagnetic waves, the
surfaces are made of conductors which completely reflect the
incident electromagnetic waves. There are different geometric
structures which can function as a waveguide among which the
Rectangular Waveguide and Coaxial Waveguide are the most common.
6. What is skin effect?
-Skin effect is a tendency for alternating current to flow mostly near
the outer surface of an electrical conductor, such as metal wire. The
effect becomes more and more apparent as the frequency increases.
7. Differentiate transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes in
waveguides
-The transverse electric mode is dependent upon the transverse electric
waves, also sometimes called H waves, characterized by the fact that
the electric vector (E) being always perpendicular to the direction of
propagation.Transverse magnetic waves, also called E waves are
characterized by the fact that the magnetic vector (H vector) is
always perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
8. What is meant by dominant mode of operation?
-The mode with the lowest cutoff frequency is termed the dominant
mode of the guide. It is usual to choose the size of the guide such that
only this one mode can exist in the frequency band of operation. It is
possible for many waveguide modes to propagate along a waveguide.
The number of possible modes for a given size of waveguide increases
with the frequency. It is also worth noting that there is only one
possible mode, called the dominant mode for the lowest frequency
that can be transmitted.
9. Search the internet and submit some pictures of an actual waveguides
