Two and a Half Years Previously
The crash of the thunder and the whistling of the wind outside signalled a chilly autumnal
evening. The rain was hammering down and lashing against the windows. Inside the
bedroom, a lamp had just been switched on and the duvet cover pulled back. Sat on the bed
were two figures. They looked at each other with the notion that what they were doing was
wrong however couldn’t bring themselves to do the right thing. They took each other’s hands
in a tight grip.
‘Why are we doing this again?’ asked the first figure.
The second figure responded almost immediately. It was as if he’d already rehearsed it.
‘Because it feels right, don’t you think? Deep down I know you do.’
‘What if we’re caught though, it’s a possibility’, said the first figure.
‘If that is ever the case then we will come up with a solution. A plan to keep ourselves well
hidden’ said the second figure.
The first figure gave a small smile looking deep into the eyes of the second figure.
‘If we’re going to do this then we have to commit’, said the first figure. ‘But what are you
going to do about your personal situation?’
The second figure shrugged unable to find an answer.
‘I don’t know really. Just keep things going as they are. Put on a false pretence or something
like that. If truth be told I haven’t given it much thought’.
‘But that’s dangerous’, said the first figure.
The second figure chuckled.
‘Relax, okay, it’s all going to be fine. We will find a way to make sure things work out.’
‘So, this is it then? The first plunge?’ asked the first figure.
‘Yes. The only plunge necessary. Everything will be fine, leave it with me’, declared the
second figure.
And with all said and done, they climbed into bed.
‘It’s going to be a long night ahead’, said the second figure turning off the bedside lamp.
