Barthel Index

The Barthel Index is a test used to measure performance in activities of daily living (ADL). It assesses 10 categories on a scale of 0 to 15 or 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating greater independence. The categories include feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, bowels, bladder, toilet use, transfers, mobility, and stairs. Scores from each category are summed to provide a total score between 0 and 100, with independent functioning indicated by a score closer to 100. The Barthel Index was developed in 1965 and has been shown to reliably measure ADL performance.
