Action Research in Nursing Education

This document outlines an action research activity for graduate nursing students at Arellano University. It describes action research as a process of identifying problems, collecting data systematically, reflecting and analyzing, taking action based on the data, and redefining the problem. Students are directed to identify a problem area related to illness behaviors/needs or the impact of illness. They must formulate a meaningful research question, select respondents, gather and organize appropriate data, analyze and interpret the findings, and design an action plan to enact change and study that change.

Action Research Activity

Action research is deliberate, solution-oriented investigation that is group or personally

owned and conducted. It is characterized by spiraling cycles of problem identification,
systematic data collection, reflection, analysis, data-driven action taken, and, finally, problem
redefinition. The linking of the terms “action” and “research” highlights the essential features
of this method: trying out ideas in practice as a means of increasing knowledge about or
improving curriculum, teaching, and learning (Kemmis & McTaggart, 1988).

It is increasingly becoming a tool for school reform, as its very individual focus allows for a
new engagement in educational change.

Topics for action research :

a. Illness behaviors and needs of the adult clients with acute illness/or chronic illness
b. Impact of acute illness/or chronic illness on the client and their families from a
social, psychological, physical, spiritual, or economic perspective.
Directions
1. Identify a Problem Area in listed topics for action research.
a. limit the question to one that is meaningful and doable in the confines of their
daily lives.
b. Consider the following criteria in before investing the time and effort in
“researching” a problem. The question should
 be a higher-order question—not a yes/no

 be stated in common language, avoiding jargon

 be concise

 be meaningful

 not already have an answer

c. Select student-respondents of the study. Students can be:
a. High school
b. College
c. Graduate

2. Gather Data
a. Select the data that are most appropriate for the issue being researched
b. Organize the data

3. Interpret the Data

a. Analyze and interpret the data

4. Act on Evidence
a. Use the information from the data collection and review of current literature,
b. Design a plan of action that will allow to make a change and to study that change
