Updates/News:
01/11/2018 - cleaning up. to any newcomers: keep in mind a lot of the stuff here is 2yrs~ old
and pre-delta rune. download delta rune here. -konrad/dave
17/01/2018 - Had a number of requests for access recently! I’m very glad this is still being used.
Please remember, if you want to add or change things, start doing it! It will show up as a
suggestion for me! Thanks for contributing! - Djin
17/02/2017 - Got things all cleaned up again, but I think the initial popularity has died down
some. I hope this can stay as a fun bit of community for everyone that finds it in the future. -Djin
21/01/16: stuff for v1.001 patch: decent chunk of the more of-note updates. imgur album for
more interesting updates as well. /r/underminers thread for the updates - goes into more detail
than the other links if you want to sift throuh comments.
edit: “If the update causes your game to NOT work, revert to old version:
Right-click UNDERTALE in Library-->Properties -->Betas -->old_version_100”

us e General Guidelines
hey, you must be new here. thanks for helping with this think tank. there are
some general guidelines about this document to help keep our thoughts
organized. try to follow them if you can or...
you’re gonna have a bad time.
1. Try to keep similar formatting to the rest of the document. This is to make it easier
to read and keeps it organized better. The more organized the thoughts are, the more
easily we can come up with new ideas, theories, and other discoveries.
2. When making a new section or article, make sure to Bookmark it and add it to the
Portmanteau of Contents. Follow these steps to create a link to the section/article in
the Portmanteau:
a. Highlight the title of the article
b. Go to Insert > Bookmark
c. Left Click the blue ribbon that was just created, then right click “link” and click
“copy link address”
d. Go to the Portmanteau of Contents and type the title of the article under the
appropriate section
e. Highlight the title of the article in the Portmanteau of Contents
f. Go to Insert > Link
g. Paste the address you copied earlier and hit enter
3. Before making a new theory or adding to a theory: Check all of the existing theories
to see if your idea was already mentioned. Remember, no theory is insignificant! Add to
someone else’s theory if your addition is relevant to theirs.
4. When making a new theory: Add it to the “Theories” section at the bottom. When
discussing a theory, attempt to provide links to screenshots where applicable. Make sure
to have enough evidence to support your theory or it is basically just an observation.
Sources are also important - be specific about where you got information and
screencaps from so people can join in the investigation.
5. Please do not add pictures directly to the document. Upload them and add the link to
the image (Imgur is a good place to host images). Too many pictures create
unnecessary clutter and makes the document much longer than it needs to be.
6. Please do not delete other people’s work. If you have a problem with their theory,
state a counter-argument or rebuttal so that the community can decide on the validity of
the theory.
7. This document is set to (suggestion mode). Ctrl+Alt+M is the shortcut to leave a
comment.
8. Any claims of findings found in game MUST be backed with exact details on how to
view the content in-game or it will be deemed fake and removed.

a.k.a.: What you need to know to hack your way around the secrets
1a: Scene Values
Scene # - Location (Only somewhat color coded for convenience, sorry)
==These are just the locations; events that are supposed to happen depend on your save.==
**When teleporting VIA editing save0: Error rooms give Toby sleeping with a sleepy song OR
Toby ‘dancing’ with an upbeat song. This is random.**
Note: A good chunk of scenes can only be accessed using a hex editor (Cheat Engine, HxD,
etc) to modify scene location, most notably the scene, edit address 0090F300 (this address was
relocated to 0099C270 in the v1.001 patch) during the intro to the scenes 264 and above. In
order to properly load room you are trying to enter subtract 1 from the rooms value. Once the
intro is over it will open the game in the desired room.
[ Room/encounter/item IDs in a SUPER CONVENIENT spreadsheet ]
Negative room numbers are impossible with CE (value is instantly set to a ridiculous positive
number) [this is because negative numbers are stored in weird ways in binary, look up “signed
number representation”. it’s actually correct.)

1c: Significant “Fun” Values
Okay so, the “Fun” value of 63 apparently causes most of the Gaster follower NPCs to have a
chance to appear. npc 1, in the r1 hotlands room, needs fun 61
I’ve found the following fun values most reliable for the different events:
61 = Gray NPC at R1 elevator
62 = Gray NPC at L3 elevator
63 = Gray NPC at L2 elevator
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
65 = Sound Test at Snowdin fishing spot
66 = Gray door/strange hallway to the right of Waterfall Crystal savespot
Is it confirmed 63 can trigger them all? Cause for a spot, I noticed it always changes fun in the
.ini to 0 if it fails to load.

Section 2 >>Things To Investigate<<
Artifact: The artifact could have something to do with Gaster. If there is some way to get it we
could find out more. Is there a situation (e.g. on second Genocide run) that the Annoying Dog
does not appear or absorb it? Can the game files be edited to provide access to it?
>> I'm running version 1.001 with debug turned on. I opened the dimensional box with G and
put the annoying dog in the box. I then proceeded to grab the artifact but it looks like Toby
somehow anticipated this since the words "This will never happened" appeared when I said
"yes" to taking the artifact. And now, even though the sprite is still there, every time I interact
with it I get the text box "The artifact is gone"
Amalgamates: Alphys asked for monsters that had ‘fallen down’ for her experiments. It is said
that Gaster fell into his own creation, the Core. Also, the possible Gaster sprites look like
Amalgamate - could Gaster be an Amalgamate? If so, who of? I know there’s a theory of Sans
and Papyrus being ‘halves’ of him.
>> According to at least one of the gray Gaster followers, he was "Shattered across time and
space" (I think I'm quoting that right). If that's true, and he's an Amalgamate... are the
Amalgamates shattered across time and space?
---------------------------------------------
In a True Pacifist run, when you’re obtaining the key to Sans’ workshop, Sans points out your
ability to "time travel" by manipulating the save files. When you name yourself "Gaster", it
flashes the continue screen, and then goes back to the intro. Could this possibly be Flowey
somehow also "time travelling" in the same way you did, somehow triggered by choosing the
name Gaster? could it be because Flowey may think that YOU are Gaster and he is afraid of
you?
We can assume that Flowey is the one who asks what the name of the fallen human,
because when you pick the name Flowey, it says the text "I already CHOSE that name."
>>assuming that it’s Flowey asking the fallen human’s name [from his first person perspective]
is invalid because if you name yourself any other of the character’s [for example metta] they
answer as themselves [saying “i” or “my”] therefore you can’t assume it’s Flowey asking for the
fallen human’s name
>>(is afraid enough to get determined, and thus reset)
------
I don't know where this goes but has anyone tried seeing if anything in the old demo is different?
I know the beginning where you fall is different but I haven't gone much further
>>One interesting choice I noticed in the demo was how the names didn't automatically turn
yellow when you could spare them.
-------
I noticed if you name yourself gaster via the file0 and attempt to reset it will mention that “you
have already named yourself.” and you can only reset with the name you entered previous to
the change.
>I set my name to Gaster in multiple files and when I tried to reset the “A name has already
been chosen” text pops up for a split second and then the game reloads like it would if you tried
to name yourself Gaster normally without editing files. It doesn’t seem to change the game
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
besides now you probably can’t reset until you get the True Reset lol. (I’m currently playing
through the game with this name rn.)
UPDATE: I changed my name to W.D.Gaster and changed my fun stat to 63 I started from
nearly scratch now I encountered the dummy in the ruins and I believe I have encountered
different music. https://soundcloud.com/berilu/new-sound
>>sounds like Anticipation to me too
> screencaps/video would be appreciated. the music sounds like Anticipation, which is played
“During monster encounters while accompanied by Toriel”. this would be the dummy and first
Froggit encounters.
After the battle with Asriel but before leaving the Underground you can backtrack more or less
everywhere. I notice the song “Reunited” plays everywhere EXCEPT:
- 77 - Snowdin - Papyrus’ Room
- 249 - True Lab - Red Switch
You can access the true lab by editing your SAVE file (i go to the 243 - True Lab - Alphys’s Lab
Elevator Arrived at True Lab for this test). To notice every entry in the lab now says “it’s seems
to be turned off” except the 11 (inside the 249 - True Lab - Red Switch) which talks about
Mettaton’s body.
Also the dialogue inside the elevator to the power switch room triggers again, making you leave
the True :ab.
Maybe nothing more than Toby Fox forgetting to change the map music. But I put this here.
--------
A friend of mine has seen that there is an empty place between ASGORE and the monster kid
on the title screen at the end of a pacifist run. No way that’s for nothing. Who ? Gaster ? The
empty spot is large maybe 2 characters can take place here. Asriel and Chara ?
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7nD0427Rwp4NUdnS1VqcDUzWE0
> The thing that they all have in common is that the player befriends them. So who else did the
player befriend on a pacifist run? Or maybe no one is supposed to be in that hole, maybe it has
something to do with monster kid somehow being an outcast or something. Perhaps the Gray
NPC version of him is relevant.
>>There was also the daughter of the Clam lady who mentions that you never met her. There
was also small changes to her text from version 1 to version 1.001, maybe it’s just me but I find
that an… Interesting choice.
>>> It’s most likely for Asriel.
--------
I dunno how to put this but: It’s possible with the non-Steam version of Undertale to launch
multiple applications at the same time. A huge amount of possibility here (And maybe
something useful if you think about the fact Gaster was broken into a lot of pieces around space
and time). Somebody have an idea how to explore this?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>I downloaded a pirated version to see if it would allow multiple versions to open, and nothing
immediately happened. I noticed that Flowey asked me if i had anything better to do in the 3rd
and 4th window, since each process must have increment a counter in the save file (I deleted
the data in local appdata). I didn't go past the Flowey intro or anything, but some secret could be
possible later in the game. Also I didn't bother with changing the fun value. but… if you can't
access such secrets with Steam maybe Toby didn't add such a thing.
>>I got my copy of Undertale from a friend, would the above work for me?
>>In one of my tabs Flowey said “Why would you make me introduce myself?” and then
continues normally.
>>>Multiple copies of undertale on the same computer all sync save files as far as i can tell

I have discovered something in the audio that plays during the secret ‘Entry 17’ message.
There’s something hidden in one ear of the audio, very quiet. I’ve tried to make some sense of
it, but I’m not sure what to make of it.
>Which ear? If it’s so quiet, that narrows our search down by 50%. What did you hear?
>There is a new secret discovered in the soundfiles of the game, but sadly the uploader on
YouTube had to take it down, due to something in the file stating if it was posted online to the
public, Toby would stop adding secrets into the game. Could these hidden words be what they
found? Go look up “Burning Torrent” on youtube. Known for uploading “Dirty Undertale
Confession Simulator”
>Is this abc_123_a.ogg?
>>abc_123_a.ogg is a message spoken by various robot voices asking you not to spoil the
game or post stuff about it online.
>The audio played in entry17 (Gaster) is mus_smile.ogg, I tried to understand the message
modifying speed and pitch of the audio, but i got nothing from it. Some people say you can hear
things like: “help me / this is not an experiment / im in the core / Hey, let me out / … “
>According to a reddit thread:
LET ME OUT, LET ME OUT (HEY) /THIS IS NOT AN EXPERIMENT
I'M BEGGING FOR HELP, I'M SCREAMING FOR HELP (HEY)
PLEASE COME LET ME OUT!
I'M DYING IN A CORE IN HOTLANDS!
I think abc_123 is mettaton related, not sure tho -Noge
> Just to be clear, that reddit comment (the highlighted one above) is most likely a reference to
a scene in the show Rick and Morty, and not an actual speculation.
> The way I found it is by separating each ear into individual mono tracks, and inverting one
track. From what it seems, it’s just Muffet’s laugh (which is strange, because of her mention of
Gaster)
> @above: she doesn’t mention gaster, necessarily; she could be talking about flowey who
offered her a lot of money for your SOUL (we’ve seen him change faces and the shape of his
head). though it could be gaster manifesting some kind of consciousness/physical form in the
shadows, constantly changing appearance to talk to her, though i can’t fathom why her. maybe
because she’s not a part of the general friendship crew that your other bosses are, so she has
no attachment to you. - konrad
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>> Personally I think it’s Mettaton who hired Muffet, since he admits to hiring the rest. Also, I
looked inside mus_smile.ogg with Audacity, and noticed that about halfway through the file,
there’s a sigh… it was made more noticeable when I used the equalizer in a smile-like
formation.
--------
There are more gaster sounding audio files than mus_smile.ogg Look up Undertale sound
effects. I am currently testing things for secretes.

Has anyone tried Fun values with different capitalised letters? “fUn, fuN, etc.”?
>I think that might be a genius idea. Let’s see if we can get three, six or nine people to try the
whole game and all 3 main endings with different capitals. I’ll probably do a pacifist run whilst
others can try no mercy and neutral. Anyone interested, leave an email here so we can contact
you.
>I disagree. It would kind of be a programing nightmare to keep track of different levels of fun
values based off of punctuation. I feel like this would be overthinking it. Neglecting to capitalize
the first letter the .ini file feels like an intentional design as the rest of the .ini is capitalized fine.
Anyone with a little programing knowledge would call this a stretch.-SEH
---------
I’ve noticed that deleting the UNDERTALE folder in appdata then using the name “Gaster” then
closing Undertale creates a folder with only a file named playerachievementcache.dat which is
there when you start the game without saving. Someone please read into this, possibly finding a
difference in data? Maybe a checked flag that isn’t checked in the control data?
>The playerachievementcache.dat is created when you close the game no matter what. Seems
like you don't have to try using the name "Gaster".
>The playerachievementcache.dat is created by GameMaker Studio in any created game.
---------
There is a house in the background left from the cave entrance to mysterious door, you can
occasionally see someone walk in and out. Could be irrelevant.
> I would love to know who that is
>>Could someone please upload a picture of this or a short mp4?
---------
I noticed that the title of the program (what normally says UNDERTALE at the top) sometimes
changes at different points in the game. For example, someone found that the title changes
during Mettaton’s musical (look at the top of the image) Perhaps this could have a hidden
message in one of the secret rooms? Just a thought.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Another occurrence of the above is during the fake intro cutscene before the Omega Flowey
fight. side note: this seems to occur only in windowed mode, which (i would assume) a lot of
people don't play in. so something might have been missed.
>I played Undertale all the time in window mode, when you’re in the part of Omega Flowey you
can see how the title changes the name a lot of times (Some of them are words like alkmgds,
but maybe they’re coded, like gravity falls or wing dings.), you cannot read it, i wonder if it hides
a message what we did not see it until now, can anyone confirm it?, the only name what i see it
was “FloweyTale”, maybe it’s the TRUE NAME of the game (laughs)
>For the above, I’ve also played in windowed for all of the game (I found the full screen too…
pixely), anyways I noticed the changing texts as well. It seems to be gibberish having dgdjf as
one of them, I doubt there would be a secret message hidden in there. Oh and also, floweytale
appears when you attempt to open up your… “corrupt save file”.
> The title might change to gibberish for the purpose of giving you that ‘game is broken’ effect. If
the text happens to mean anything, it’s more likely that it has to do with a code or cipher rather
than a direct letter translation/font like Wingdings considering the lack of patterns in the two
keysmash examples above.
---------
So, about that entry 17… I think it might actually be referring to the game’s physical player and
sans, since they are the ones which have the most direct involvement in the mystery part of the
investigation. PLUS, it is very likely for the physical player to be especially involved since as
we’ve seen before, sans is capable of identifying time travel from the player. Plus, about the
Photon Readings Negative part… That basically means that there’s no light at all. Where in the
game is there absolutely no light at all? Some examples include that room itself (Would be
interesting to find something there), and maybe the other room with the (redacted) being. After
looking through, another nice idea might be looking at room 276 which is full blackness. Can
anyone further investigate on this for me? I think that the best place to look for leads might be
places with no light, which would be a healthy way of knocking that weird screen with Flowey
and the pillars in it out of here for a while. Keep on going!
>> Room 276: I'm running a copy of 1.001 with debug turned on, when I went to this room I
encountered weird variation of the Froggit fight at the beginning of the game and then shortly
encountered the following error:

>> Just want to point out - A photon is a particle representation of a wave that propagates in
space. Basically, "light energy." Negative amounts of energy/mass can be used to create very
temporary "wormholes," which (according to one interpretation of the multiverse theory) could
be a "closed time-like curve," which goes back in time, then forward, only to go back again. A
different interpretation says that time is like a river that branches off. Every time a decision is
made (very often), it branches again. Since there are very few decisions in Undertale, the
branches must be very well defined. Perhaps the branches are timelines that Gaster is trying to
"jump between"? Also, the Sans fight says "timelines jumping left and right" - referring to
reverting to old saves. Could he possibly be referring to you being like Gaster's experiment?
>The rooms in section 3, the waterfall area, where there’s no light, and only light around you,
including the room w
>Checking out the room would be the best option, but for the entry 17 related theory, look to the
Bolded, underlined theory above. Keeping this for future investigation.
>I think a negative photon reading is scientifically impossible-- there’s not just an absence of
light, but it’s being taken away or something. Maybe this is related to the screwy time-space
things.
>> Actually, I have an idea here. At one point (in real life) somebody observed something they
called a ‘positron’. It was an electron, except it appeared to have a positive charge. The most
common scientific theory about that is that it was an electron traveling backwards in time,
therefore inverting the matter. So perhaps could a negative photon count be light traveling
backwards in time?
>Scientifically impossible would be elementary for a guy like Gaster. Maybe it was an
experiment with the DT Extractor to increase its output. I believe there is a secret in talking to
Gaster when you are in a similar position, trapped in the void. I’m currently exploring my options
while I have the post-geno ending where you sell your soul. Ideas are welcome!
>There are 3 sets of Wingdings. Perhaps the two others represent those two other sets?
> It could be Gaster talking about where he is now. There’s no light in the Void.
>”Photon Readings Negative” isn’t simply the lack of light it’s inverted light; as in there is
something that acts opposite to what light is and that is what is being referred to. Perhaps
something like dark matter? Dark matter’s equivalent to light? Absolute darkness as far as
photon readings would go would register as 0 and any dim amount of light would read positive.
-AR
> Scientifically speaking, “Dark Matter” is simply matter we’re pretty sure exists but can’t yet
explain. You might be thinking of antimatter (particles with opposite charges), but as photons
have no charge, anti-photons can’t exist. In other words, real science has nothing to do with
this.

>While playing around with cheat engine (completely unknowing of what I was doing) I ended
up teleporting to room 94 (crystal cheese save spot). So far I’ve only noticed two major
differences: 1) There were two Frisks in the room, both controllable 2) My character’s name had
been automatically changed from FRISK to CHARA. Additionally, the collisions in the room were
all messed up and interacting with items brought up different messages than usual (interacting
with the cheese brought up the dialogue from the onion-like monster (Onionsan) in room 95 and
interacting with the flower brought up a text box that instantly disappeared). After a short while
of walking around. I lost all ability to move.
>That’s not exactly strange. You could have changed a value that made your name Chara and it
may have messed up due to your name being Frisk, and Hard Mode not containing anything
outside of the Ruins. I think it should still be looked into though.

> Not sure if anyone tried, but has anyone attempted to kill Sans over and over again in the
geno run? Like since he knows a lot about the “time travel” I feel like if he dies over and over
again, some interesting dialogue will come out like potential information on Gaster? Someone
please try! Sans is too hard for me D:
> I have done this several times in my last bunch of no-true-reset runs (four Sans kills). Besides

>Something that’s been bugging me; during Sans’s dialogue for relaying passwords to get his
room key toward the end of the game, he says ‘whisper whisper’ when telling you the first
password but uses his serious/black-eye portrait and says ‘whimsper whimsper’ instead when
relaying the second password. Is there some kind of significance to using ‘whim’ here? I was
thinking the Whimsun enemy might be related to it based on the name, maybe something to do
with it’s unusual reaction to the Talk command (I think it runs from the battle instead of letting
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
you spare it? The flavour text on it also mentions ‘bursting into tears and running away before
you’ve finished your first word’). Could be worth backtracking to the Ruins when getting each
password from Sans (especially the second one that’s ‘whimspered’ to you) and using the Talk
action on Whimsun again instead of immediately relaying the passwords to Sans when
reloading the game. Aside from it maybe being linked to the Whimsalot enemy instead, I’ve no
other ideas on why ‘whim’sper would be used over whisper for the second password, or why
Sans would be given his serious portrait (E4?) for this particular line.
> problem with going back to see is that after you finish the boss for an area (toriel for ruins, in
this case), random monster encounters stop. not sure if just going back to the areas you can
encounter whimsun and whimsalot would have any affect on your f/Fun value though.
another place with similarly odd misspelling is the true lab’s vending machine, where you
can buy popato chisps. this is interesting considering sans and alphys’ connections.

weird stuff. knock yourself out. names and consistently capitalized words (mentioned elsewhere
on the doc, things like ‘CORE’, ‘LOVE’, etc.) may hold significance in the other wingdings. if i’m
guessing, i’m gonna say focusing on caps would be best.
>The word ‘SOUL’ it’s capitalized every time during the game, could be an acronym too…? Plus
in the LIBRARBY the far right shelf tells info about the nature of SOULs, but it says this: ‘Love,
hope, compassion... ( note that love isn’t capitalized, so regular monsters know about the
meaning of the word love, not just Sans) This is what people say monsters SOULs are made
of.’. I find it peculiar how SOUL is still in caps while the ‘s’ to make it plural isn’t, indicating that
the word SOUL has a meaning of it’s own. The next bit of info in the book says: ‘But the
absolute nature of “SOUL” is unknown.’ . Again, the nature of SOUL, not the nature of a SOUL.
Seems like it’s an entity apart of monsters and/or humans.

Count the Dogs!
Did we really forget one of the goals of the game as according to the steam page? Although it
may be a joke (plus I’ve noticed a ‘Healthy Dog’ was recently added to the About), there’s
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
definitely a set number of dogs in the game. At first glance, there are the 5 Royal Guard dogs
that hang out at Grillby’s, Annoying Dog, and Endogeny, making 7, 6 of which are encounters
(you can’t fight Annoying Dog, aka Toby Fox, but one day you might?). But wait… can’t
Endogeny count as like 5 dogs? Also most of the dogs have attacks that use sprites of
Annoying Dog. Are those sprites in fact Annoying Dog, themselves somehow, or new dogs?
Annoying Dog appears during Papyrus’s attacks, but Dogamy and Dogaressa have an attack
that uses 2 Annoying Dog sprites at once. And what about the dog faces in Greater Dog’s armor
and spear? And then there’s the dog boat!
So I want to know how many dog-related sprites and items there are. I also want to tally up all
Annoying Dog appearances and references. Can we assume Annoying Dog is behind that last
hotel room door? Annoying Dog doesn’t seem to otherwise care if you’re doing genocide except
I don’t remember him being in that last room if you are. Has anyone tried using Hush Puppy for
all the dogs?
Why does Toby want us to count the dogs? Who knows where this may lead us.
> looking at that recently added tweet link and i’m wondering if he’s joking or what. hard mode i
kinda get, since it’s already in the game (albeit not very long). dog mode? all dogs? maybe it’s
some kind of god mode. but with dogs.
addendum: it should be mentioned that one of the flavour changes from v1.001 is for
endogeny that states ‘unsure how many dogs this counts as’ (paraphrasing here). there’s no
way that doesn’t relate to this general mystery. he might be making it difficult to count them on
purpose, or he’s saying that counting the dogs isn’t actually important (because this would mean
getting an accurate number is literally impossible).

I have uploaded every sound, and song, that plays to the game to Media Fire. - Link to

they're counterparts are called on the offical soundtrack. Like how "mus_spider" is call "Spider

aren't actually in the game. For example, tracks such as "mus_star" was uploaded as well.
Maybe they were scrapped? And I would enjoy help investigating whether some of these tracks
are unknown as of right now. As well as there are quite a lot of tracks that are not in the official
soundtrack, nor on Undertale's bandcamp. Such as "mus_st_him". That track is "Gaster's

2a: “mus_wrongworld.ogg” found in Undertale Files
I know there’s a theory out there that Gaster is in another world due to his experiments so I

anyone can find out if this a hidden song or scrap, but I can say the title of the song
“wrongworld” does raise some red flags. I’m sure if it is hidden, Gaster has to be involved with
it...

3.01: “Uboa Skeleton” is Gaster
Some people believe the "Uboa skeleton" is Gaster, although i don’t know how true this is,
someone should try to find the name of the figure in the game files and see what its called.
>His sprite name is “spr_mysteryman_0”. The sprite that comes up when you interact with him
is “spr_mysteryman_1”.
3.02: Shyren’s song
Has anyone tried to play Shyren’s entire song at the piano? It doesn’t have any “la” or “ti” in it
so it should be doable (I think?). Also it might be interesting to turn the solfege into numbers
and see if anything interesting can be done with them?
> I tried playing Shyren's song on the piano but a La does exist so unless there is a way to play
a 6th note it is impossible.
> Try a chord.
> On the piano you can only hold one of the directional inputs in at a time, if you hold two down
the left most one on the lights above the piano takes priority. I’m pretty sure that means that you
can only play 5 different notes.
Shyren’s “song”, the dialogue that she says when you hum with her, seems to be a singing
exercise, and googling Si Re Mi So Fa La brings up Solfège and it appears that each syllable
represents a note. There are 7 of these Syllables, the last being Do (which Shyren never uses),
which may explain why the Piano Puzzle can be solve with a combination of 7. Solfège is a
music education used to teach pitch and harmony singing.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
This is Shyren’s “song”:
Si re,
Si re
Si mi
Si mi
Si Fa
Si Fa
So Fa So
Mi Re Re
Mi So
Mi So
Mi Si Mi
La Si So
(aggressive tooting)
(final toot)
/* if I'm right, shyren has like 3 or 4 different possible songs - Noge */
Solfege Scale(with half-steps in parentheses): Do-(Di)-Re-(Ri)-Mi-Fa-(Fi)-Sol-(Si)-La-(Li)-Ti-Do
Also to note that Shyren’s song uses Si and So, which are not on the Solfege scale- instead Ti
and Sol are; which means that again in another mystery there are unused letters.
>>According to the wikipedia page for solfege, there actually is a “Si” which is a Raised “Sol”.
Also “So” could just mean “Sol” as it’s pronounced similarly. Based upon that I transcribed
Shyren’s song as numbers, representing their “distance” in halftones to “Do”:
In portuguese the note Si is the same as the note Ti in english
>>Not just in Portuguese--it seems that Ti as a solfege syllable is unique to the English
speaking world. That being said, there’s the famous song Shipoopi from The Music Man and
which most people will recognise from Family Guy which clearly uses Si instead of Ti (see the
link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOz2TSbmmhw). In more recent techniques for
teaching solfege and pitch, there have been some teachers who’ve used the syllable Si as a
half-step between So and La. I’m not sure that Toby Fox--a music composer and certainly well
aware of the basics of music--would have used Si in this new way: but now, that’s just a matter
of my own opinion.

I decided to do a quick thing to make it possible to hear Shyren’s song (including the aggressive
tooting and the final toot):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6d46io57nqto6h6/shyren.mp3?dl=0
>After replaying the game, I just noticed that the tones Shyren is making are sounding much
different than what the speech bubbles implicate. I just doctored a bit with a recording of it, and
the sounds shyren makes and also the bass tones are both only using 5 different notes. Trying
to play the first part did do nothing, thought. (I only played the main melody, not the background
tones)
>>>Rewriting Shyren’s song replacing the Si’s and So’s with Sol’s does make the song playable
on the piano, here is the song:
Sol Re
Sol Re
Sol Mi
Sol Mi
Sol Fa
Sol Fa
Sol Fa Sol
Mi Re Re
Mi Sol
Mi Sol
Mi Sol Mi
La Sol Sol
Listening to the Dropbox audio above (Thank you btw) I can make an educated guess of what
each of the syllables represents:
Sol- Z
Re- Left
Mi- Down
Fa- Right
La- Up
Playing the song on the piano so far has done nothing, probably due to the fact that I cannot
determine what the last two sounds are, being the aggressive and final toot.
>>>> I’m not sure if this is worth noting, but a lowered 5th degree note (Se) is also known as a
tritone, and in Renaissance composition it was frowned upon for use due to the suspicion that
the sound was a way to summon the devil.
More information on the tritone can be found here: https://www.uberchord.com/blog/the-tritone/
It requires a bit of artistic liberty, but is it too much of stretch to say that Shyren’s song could be
a way to “summon” Gaster?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>You guys are used to the Movable do solfege that goes “Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti”, but latin
language use the Fixed do solfege, and it goes “Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si”. Maybe that’s what
shyren is using.
>That’s what I would’ve suggested, as well. In fact, if Shyren is starting to sing with Si (which I’m
assuming here is the same as Ti) would mean that she’s singing in the Locrian Mode which is a
very difficult and potentially depressing sounding. What the Locrian mode is is that instead of
starting on the first note on the scale of that key (like having a song in C major and starting your
song on the musical note C) you start on the seventh note of the scale (the letter notes of the
scale are ABCDEFG before repeating. In the case of C major, you’re starting on C and going all
the way through to B before starting again with C, so that the C major scale looks like
CDEFGABC. The Locrian Mode wants you to start on the seventh note of any scale--in the case
of C major, that would mean starting on B and going through: BCDEFGAB. We would call this
C-Locrian to differentiate it from any other Locirans out there since the seventh note of the
musical scale is going to change depending on what key you’re in). Look here for a quick
overview to give you a sense of the sound of the song she’s singing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJBAASlipMQ
IF--and I do mean IF--she’s singing in the locrian mode, it would be interesting to see if there’s
any other music written in that Mode. Just by way of comparison, “His Theme” is written in G#
Major (whose major scale looks like this G#; A#; C; C#; D#; F; G; G#;) but uses a Mixolydian
mode (which means it starts playing using the fifth note of the scale--D#). D# A#2 G# D# G G
G#--that’s what “His Theme” looks like in musical notation on the piano near the artifact room.
The F that is also a part of that major scale is not present. Given that information, it’s La- -which
is the same as note F in the G# major scale--that cannot be played on the piano. And since
Shyren sings the note La, I don’t think the song is playable.
Shyren’s dialogue refers to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haia7rws7jo . The solfeggio in
that song refers to the actual notes being sung, and Si in this case refers to the seventh scale
degree often referred to Ti rather than a raised Sol. Furthermore, Sol is usually sung as So
because it’s much easier to pronounce, especially at a quick tempo - there probably isn’t any
significance to Shyren using So rather than Sol. As for the actually notes in the attack, I tried
transcribing them a while ago - the bass notes are always Bb and C (in the first couple of
attacks, it’s always one Bb followed by one C. In the final attack she alternates several times
between Bb and C). Her first attack is a random arpeggiation between four notes - F, C, and F
and C again an octave higher - after completing a transcription I realized that the arpeggiations
are different every time and so there’s probably no hidden message. It sounds like all her
following attacks are generated similarly, but with more possible notes added each time. If
anyone’s interested this is the transcription I finished: http://i.imgur.com/AqSV2Ai.png based on
this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOqeA3rexCU watching another video (e.g.

3.15: Annoying Dog
Has anyone ever tried dropping the annoying dog outside of the artifact room? If so, what
happens? Assuming it won’t let you walk out of the room with the dog, or the dog auto drops
when you try to leave. I’m just curious.
that is correct. it just poofs.
on a related note, is it possible to get the annoying dog forced into your inventory at all (outside
of the room, ofc)? if so, does it do stuff?
>I'm not sure, when I come back to Waterfall on my current playthrough I’ll check.
>I remember I tried this a few weeks ago-- it looked like the dog just spawns in the room only
and you can't take him out. I did try going in with a full inventory to see if he'd fill a slot
anyways(he didn't) but I didn't check to see if he'd jump in my inventory if I trashed an item.
>If you drop the dog in the room with the artifact, the dog consumes the artifact and runs off,
leaving an item in your inventory in its place called DogResidue. You can infinitely use the item
to fill up your inventory space for a chance at more DogResidue or a Dog Salad. That’s about all
it does. As long as you have DogResidue, you can continue to do this.
>Debug Mode allows you to put him in a box, but if you examine the Artifact, all it says is “This

and come back in, poof it away.
>> We muist find a way to get the artifact.

3.16: Kanji Notepad
Has anyone tried typing something into the playerachievementcache notepad in the AppData
folder?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>YES! If you type things into it after loading your save it adds Chinese characters; the things
that I tried were key words like “Gaster”, “Frisk”, “Papyrus” etc- however typing LITERALLY
ANYTHING into it yields the same results so it is nothing special. The responses seem random:
apparent broken unicode which is I believe normal for a .dat file. For example typing “Frisk” in
gave me “牆獩k ”. I did have a huge list but I got rid of it because I was not getting any
consistent results, or anything noteworthy, nor did I have any way of actually decoding the
broken code (I don’t trust Google Translate), leading me to believe that I was looking way too
hard for something that wasn’t of any use.
>It should be noted that only the first character has a meaning of wall. The second has a
pronunciation, but no one I have asked knows what it means. The last character is not a word.
Some things that I got from a few more tries:
I don’t know what gave me this, it was just there- ύ樠ύ 쳻 耀欐
W.D Gaster- 腲 言
Sans- gave nothing… weird as I did test this on an earlier date and it gave out characters
Papyrus-醐嘯
Chara-閞
garfhakjfnbrhaihfbjzambmnbg- 抻 (to prove anything gives out characters)
Maybe someone who knows more about computing than lil ole me can make some sense out of
this? Or is it nothing- which seems likely.
>I can confirm that none of these Kanji mean anything. They are literally just broken code. From
a programmer’s aspect of view, it is possible that the value is just the binary encoding of the
names (not confirmed). Has someone tried converting the .dat file to a Microsoft Word file, by
the way?
>This is all a special thing you can do with text files. If you have a plaintext text file with one
certain symbol at the start of it, when opening the notepad file it just reads that hex data as part
of the text, but if you add more data after it (typing stuff in) it interprets that symbol as a header
for unicode, so if you type in stuff and then save it and open it again, it's opening the text in a
different format where the letters you type in combine and usually produce chinese characters.
3.17: Using Phones and Items in Hidden Rooms
So in the rooms where you find the inaccessible flowers, the ear DESTROYER, and supposed
Gaster, has anyone tried making phone calls? exploring menus etc? if so, were there any
interesting results?
>This is impossible, as using cheat engine to get into those rooms disables your phone and
gives you no items.
>I think it’s possible, but I can’t do it (yet). Surely Mirrawrs can (?)... Cheat engine is not the only
way to get into those places :3, I will notify if I can do something about it -Noge

This file appeared only when I had gone to the File Location while at the very beginning of the

games File Location from Task Manager, and I found a file I had never seen before. In my haste
and stupidity, I opened it in notepad without reading the name (Something I am extremely
annoyed with). I only saw .win at the end of the name. What I got was this gigantic rows upon
rows of letters and words, some english, some look to be in other languages. I have it all saved
in a Notepad right now. Fair warning, It’s pretty big. I’m calling it “FormGen8a” because those
are the first words and letters on the entire thing. I tried finding the file again but I have no idea
what exactly I did to open it. I’m just glad It’s saved in a notepad file. I am trying to link it but the
page keeps crashing when I try to.

series of hidden images of flowey with different faces, dollarsigns for eyes, winking etc. Nothing
meaningful though except for the message left in the code, which is probably there to mess with
us.
3.20: Cameras
Gaster Follower 3 says that Gaster is watching the player. There are also several other events
which say similar things (e.g. the encounter in the gray door room in Waterfall. The cameras
throughout Snowdin (and no doubt in other places too) are probably being used by Gaster (from
the void) and/or Alphys. And maybe Chara too (who may also be in the void). It’s also
interesting that in the reward tiers video, Papyrus says that they are currently in the void (see
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xh1KnP_LBU), more evidence to suggest their relationship
with Gaster, and also how they came to be in Snowdin (shopkeeper says they just appeared
suddenly).
>Cameras are used by Alphys. She tells us that she’s been watching the player when we first
meet her. It’s obvious that these are her cameras.
3.21: Gaster Tarot Card
http://i.imgur.com/HG1ELlA.jpg - The card in question.
The official Undertale tarot cards sold on Fangamer include a Gaster card, which confirms many
things we already speculated about the elusive Royal Scientist. The first thing is that he looks
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
identical to the MysteryMan in waterfall that appears when your Fun value is set to 66. This
proves that the MysteryMan is indeed Gaster, which has never been undeniably proven until
now. The four icons on the corners of the card also reveal some interesting things. On the upper
left is a broken bone, which may indicate that Gaster is a skeleton. On the upper right is a
Gaster Blaster, proving beyond doubt that Gaster created them, and the name ‘gasterblaster’ in
the game’s files was not just a red herring or a troll by Toby Fox. On the bottom left and right are
hand signs, likely alluding to the fact that Gaster speaks in Wingdings, a font that uses hand
symbols for many of its letters. In the background behe grey door is a strange skull that
resembles the DT Extraction Machine, indicating that Gaster is the creator of that device. The
door that Gaster is entering is grey, just like the one we go through to find him in Waterfall, likely
proving that they are one and the same. Below Gaster we can see a reflection of the CORE,
further reinforcing the fact that Gaster created the massive power generator. This card is
completely official Undertale merchandise, just like all the others sold on Fangamer, so it has
been approved and confirmed by Toby.
> for tarot people like myself: Gaster’s card is Major Arcana: IX - The Hermit. on the classic
Rider-Waite deck (and any similar decks) this is an old man standing on a mountain holding a
lantern (Lamp of Truth) and staff. relevant themes are wisdom and knowledge.
small + fun note: Papyrus (V - The Hierophant, top left) and Sans (XX - Judgment,
bottom right) both have bones on the borders of their cards, too, though theirs are whole.
Greater Dog (VIII - Strength, bottom right), Doggo (2 of Swords, all corners) and I assume the
other dogs have bones on their borders, but i assume for different reasons. overall honestly
significant and entertaining information/symbolism in the tarot deck. - konrad

Section 4 >>Major Theories/Speculation<<
4a: Gaster
4a.01: Naming self ‘Gaster’
1. I’ve noticed that deleting the UNDERTALE folder in appdata then using the name “Gaster”
then closing Undertale creates a folder with only a file named playerachievementcache.dat
which is there when you start the game without saving. Someone please read into this, possibly
finding a difference in data? Maybe a checked flag that isn’t checked in the control data?
note with Gaster name issue: I’ve gotten past it. After starting a game, rename the character to
Gaster in the undertale.ini file and in the save file, and then enter the game and save. Not sure
what it does yet. Wonderful! keep going, it might lead to something.
Mentioned this below but mentioning again, I also did this with Cheat Engine, True Pacifist
playthrough completely, but nothing changed.*
● putting your name in Gaster just gets you back in the title screen
● I hope you know that this says that Gaster is only nameable by going into the .ini file.
● I’m not sure whether this is okay to say put Gaster was erased from time and space,
sans can tell whether you have been time travelling or not, due to your conversations
with him.
● In the new v1.05 update, you don’t have to press “Done” for the game to restart. It
restarts as soon as you type the last “r”.
I came to a (potentially significant) realization. Gaster (or what we assume to be him) looks very
much like, and is even more mysterious than the hidden character Uboa from Yume Nikki. I’m
not the brightest so I’m not sure if this could be important BUT I trust that this community could
find out if this is a lead. That is interesting. This game does have influences from Yume,
Earthbound, Mother, etc.; I don’t think this is something that needs to be looked into. Keeping it
due to it being trivia.
>Could your inability to name your character “Gaster” be because he’s supposedly been
“Shattered Across Time and Space”? I mean, if you try to name yourself something that has had
it’s existence completely revoked or displaced from the “time-space continuum”, wouldn’t that
create a fundamental error, in terms of physics? It’d be like trying to get the point (0,4) on the
graph y = 2x. It’s also assumed that the idea of “Time Travel” and “Timelines” is essentially
really advanced physics, and that being of scientific background, Gaster (and potentially Sans)
would have at least some knowledge of physics at this level.
> Definitely some possible symbolism there (though in a more practical sense, someone else
having that name isn’t impossible. but that’s not the point. you catch my drift). If it’s any help,
Sans is implied to have some sort of a thing for quantum physics. Or maybe he just has the
books for fun. Wow that wasn’t supposed to be a pun but it is now.
>There isn’t a way to prevent the game to restart when you name yourself Gaster?
> If you have edited the undertale.ini and file0, file2 and file9 files and made your name “Gaster”
(Without “), attempting to reset does the same thing as when trying to name your character
Gaster. It simply takes you back to the main start.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>Not sure if this helps any, but the demo for the game will let you name yourself Gaster without
complications. Just verified this.
4a.02: Flag triggers
I modified the files after starting a clean slate in order to name myself “Gaster”. When I got to
the part with the electric maze that Papyrus makes, he made a comment about how he
recognized me. I had no previous playthroughs, and this was done in one sitting (Without even
saving, mind you). I’ll try again to get the text and make an update. Does Papyrus normally
make mention of recognizing you there? Even after a regular playthrough?
To me he didn’t say this, but when I tried, it was after “a true reset”. Unsure why he would say
that to you. He normally makes this remark when you’ve gone past this point in the game
already.
>Maybe being named “Gaster” triggers all the chronological flags that mark previous
playthroughs, due to Gaster being omnipresent? It could be that other people who renamed
themselves “Gaster” did so on save files with old playthroughs, can somebody try this on a fresh
copy of Undertale?
>This happened in my playthrough: https://youtu.be/zP0uwzQ4xOI?t=43 I was not named
Gaster, and this was my first playthrough. However, I did reload the game at the first Snowdin
save point after seeing the cutscene with sans, Papyrus, and the rock, and, unrecorded,
Papyrus made mention that I looked familiar there as well.
> List of all the flags here.
4a.03: Forcing Gaster-related names
Was able to turn name to Gaster after messing about with the files, going to see if a run
changes anything with this name on. Though, trying to start a run from scratch still makes the
name crash game. Edit 11.10.2015: I finished the neutral and then True Pacifist with name
Gaster, nothing out of the ordinary occurred.

the name ingame to Gaster. When I change the string to “Gaster”, ingame in stats name reads
as “Gasterl” (L letter) without “. Making name, say, “Gaste” makes number(letter) go away.

figured to share. Experimenting more with Cheat Engine in the meantime.

4a.05: Gaster and Chara/Fallen Child
Just a theory, but...with all this business about naming the Fallen Child Gaster...Could Gaster
be the Fallen Child, and Chara just a red herring? (I think the wiki says “Chara” comes from a
Greek name that means “someone with the same name,” or something like that.) I suppose that
wouldn’t work out with the idea of nobody ever remembering he existed. Maybe Chara

>Maybe Gaster’s name in Wingdings(☝✌ ❄☜☼) symbolizes something? Up, two, waterfall,
Snowdin town, left, sun?
4a.06: Gaster mentions/lack thereof
Why is it that no matter what timeline you are in, nobody ever mentions Gaster even once. It
doesn’t matter which one or what happens, nobody seems to remember Gaster.
Here’s what I think. I think that maybe it has to do with the reset rampage from Flowey. Flowey
exhausted every possibility in the underground. Let's say that when Gaster fell into the core, he
just died. Nothing special happened from him just falling. But it was the reset that changed it.
What if when the timeline he died in was reset, it did cause a reaction from the core. That’s what
caused this state and it explains the grey NPCs as well. Those are all other monsters who fell
into the core. They were then scattered across time and space.
The only reason why Gaster is different is because Gaster had the soul of a boss monster. It’s
why he shows up in multiple places and is potentially remembered by Sans, but not by anyone
without knowledge about the resets. It is only a theory so I can’t say anything for sure.
> Remember in the True Pacifist Run when you are fighting Asriel when he has wings and he
says "Every time you die your friends forget you a little more"? What if Gaster discovered how to
reset, save, etc, Flowey got a hold of that power, killed Gaster over and over again, and now, no
one can remember him.
>There is someone who remembers Gaster, the person of the River; they’re the only one who
talks about Gaster. He doesn't looks like the NPC's you see in gray if you modify your FUN
value. If Gaster was real, why does only the Riverman remember, and why does he tells you to
be careful?
>Perhaps the river person was also one of the grey NPC’s, and he wears the cloak to hide the
fact that he also fell into the core?
> Well, it seems like Sans seems to know something about Gaster and was involved with him.
Do you think that Sans is Gaster, just in an another form? Sans could be hushing it up. That
would disprove the bit about
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Am I the only one who did meet someone TALKING about Gaster in the normal gameplay? At
least I think I do remember that dialogue, where he is referred to as Dr. Gaster. The dialogue
should have happened somewhere in the Hotland (def. after escaping Undyne) because the
background there was reddish as I remember. It also either contains an elevator, contains a
road corner, or is near an elevator (like leading to one). The character looked somewhere
between bizarre and normal, and wasn’t really much creepy (def. not like the 3rd follower), just
like a typical one I would expect in Undertale. (Probably hence why I don’t really remember what
the character was like…I was mildly shocked that I already met one describing him, but didn’t
think too much about that because I assumed that it was normally what everyone would meet)
The dialogue did not mention that Gaster was listening and that they shouldn’t be gossiping and
stuff.
>That was a gray NPC.
I was following the True Pacifist Route, and that was my first ever gameplay. I did meet the
wrong number call thing in Snowdin. The fun value is 9 and never altered to Fun, if that ever
helps.
Is it just me that my memory was confounded? Much thanks to anyone who’d check with me…
Also, I’d like to reproduce the situation, but I’ve already completed a Pacifist run and am
unwilling to do a True Reset for that (there is also an issue of time and random seed generation
that, a) I don’t really want to replay pretty much of the whole thing, and b) in the new run the
character may not be there which renders it in vain. Would anyone be so kind as to let me know
of possible ways to do it without a True Reset? I do have save files from when the game was in
progress.
> this is a little vague, so it’s hard to work off of. try looking through the npc list. the only
characters i can recall referring to gaster as ‘gaster’ are the grey npcs; the riverperson calls him
‘the man who speaks in hands’ (assuming that’s about him, of course), wrong number song just
says ‘G...’ before realizing they called the wrong number (one of Toriel’s phones? maybe she
gave it to the kids before you?) anyway, 9 isn’t a significant fun value iirc; most of the
gaster-related ones are around the 60s, with some of the interesting phone calls (sans’ fridge,
alphys pizza) being in the values a little below that?
> I was also sure to have seen the name Gaster / Dr. Gaster in my first neutral and pacifist runs,
thinking it was completely normal. People saying that you can’t listen his name in a normal run
made me intrigued to discover where did I listen his name… I remember googling Gaster in my
first run because he had been mentioned somewhere in the game and not recognizing that
name, I thought I did forget a character. (Also in Hotlands… Once before completing Hotlands
and once at the ending of True Pacifist). After checking every single time the word “Gaster”
appearrs in data.win, I did only found the dialogues of the grey NPC characters, nothing related
to what I remembered and I assumed my memory was wrong. I do also remember getting the
wrong number call in both games. I loved that “nonsense” call. Fallen child name used: Noge

4a.08: Gaster time travelling w/ Chara’s SOUL
So I read this, and was wondering about something. Considering that the power to SAVE and
LOAD are supposedly limited to those with high determination, and that based on Sans’ fight
dialogue, SAVE-ing and LOAD-ing your file causes “timelines jumping left and right, stopping
and starting”, and that supposedly Gaster did work on all sorts of things (most notably the
CORE) such as possibly the DT Extraction Machine, could it be possible that Gaster was
destroyed because he attempted to use the Determination from the First Human’s SOUL to time
travel (or rather, to SAVE himself), but failed? This would explain why nobody remembers him,
as technically he is in a constant state of SAVE, but without LOAD.
>So, it seems that this game related saving and loading a game, as well as resetting, to time
travel. Maybe if we relate the time travel talk to saves and loads we can piece the puzzle
together. Maybe Gaster is scattered amongst the save files. Is there any reason why there are
only file0, file8, and file9? Is it possible to play the game with a file other than those numbers?
>guy from the theory above this section here, mkidgoner’s quest flags clear when you load into
the game if you’ve met him. You cannot jump timelines (load the game, as you are stopping
your timeline only to revert back to your save point, even if it’s just for a moment, nor can you
die) or these flags are lost. Notably, when you load with mkidgoner flags, file9 retains them for a
while. I have no clue why. It’s completely possible that file9 is merely a backup file. Regardless,
seems you are locked into this timeline if you want to /do something/ with this kid
>Flowey can SAVE even without a human SOUL. SAVE and LOAD are more related to
determination than being human or not.
>Flowey could only save and load during the Photoshop Flowey fight, flowey took 6 human
souls so it could literally be because he has 6 souls.
>Someone should try playing through the whole game without saving or loading
>While I haven’t done this myself, I read somewhere that all you get is some special text in the
sans neutral ending dialogue. Not anything really interesting, but you might want to check just in
case.
>In response to Flowey being able to LOAD and SAVE during the boss fight it’s also stated that
he could SAVE and LOAD before you arrived and essentially “played the game” prior to your
arrival. -AR
4a.09: Alphys and Gaster
Do you think Alphys knows anything about Gaster?
> I feel like she does, or is at the very least vaguely familiar with him in some shape or form.
Mostly because he was the former royal scientist and she is quite possibly using his
blueprints/notes for her True Lab work. Elsewhere on the doc I mentioned how it would be
logical if she was familiar with Sans for a couple of reasons, and if that rings true, it wouldn’t be
too far a stretch to say she has knowledge of Gaster due to Sans’ connections to Gaster.
Exactly what knowledge, though, I can’t say. The only argument against this would be how
nobody else seems to remember Gaster.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>The blueprints for the Determination Extraction Machine are supposedly based on blueprints
from the previous Royal Scientist. Ironically, the machine’s title could be shortened to “DTEM”,
which sounds like “Determination”.
>I don’t think the game actually says, at any time, that the people don’t remember Gaster. Frisk
might not know the people in Sans’ photo because they are deceased monsters, or something
like that. No one says that Alphys is the first royal scientist, it’s just that no one really mentions
Gaster except for the gray NPC’s.
4a.11: Gaster, Frisk, and Sans’ lab
>Okay, so when you get access to the lab behind the Papyrus and Sans’ house, It tells you
“there is a picture of you and Sans, with someone you don’t recognize”, or something similar.
Entry 17 says something about “what do you two think?”. That might be aimed towards Frisk
and Sans, rather than Sans and Papyrus, or Toriel and Asgore, as some people might think
What do you guys think?...
>> (Wrong: The specific quote you find in Sans’s lab is "(There are photos of Sans with a lot of
people you don't recognize.)" There’s no mention of you / Frisk being in the picture, and Frisk
would have pointed it out if they were there.)
>OKAY. So it’s been confirmed--by Doggo no less-- that Sans obviously has something to do
with the Time machine. “I don't like Sans. He travels around without moving”. That being said,
Sans is also the only one noted to have the key into the lab. Assuming that he is the only one
with the key, he had something to do with Gaster and Frisk, seeing the photo. This photo is
never referenced about and there is no dialogue saying that Frisk didn't remember taking the
photo.
>> (Wrong: Frisk is not in the photo. See above.)
The Pronouns are Pacifist-related, meaning its Frisk, not Chara; and Chara being ‘Mr.
Genocide’, I don't think he would be buddy-buddy with Sans and Gaster.
That’s probably the answer. Or Could he mean someone else besides Sans from the picture
that we don’t know about?
who knows….. It’s also common knowledge now that it’s possible that Gaster is a skeleton guy.
Maybe their father? or an even older brother than Papyrus?
>I wonder if the other 6 souls has to do anything with Gaster?
-Has anyone tried to “communicate” with Gaster on a Pacifist run in the grey room, then tried to
look at the photo to see if Frisk “recognizes” someone from the photo as the person in the Grey
Room?
>Gaster related flags are cleared when you leave, the implication of which is that Frisk’s
memories are being taken
>>Can’t we take note of those flags and change them back afterwards? This needs a test.
>So Frisk is unable to recall Gaster after leaving the room, because Gaster supposedly doesn’t
exist?
> Actually, there is a mention of Frisk in that picture:
“The next drawer contains a badge and the last drawer contains an album with Sans and a lot of
people you don't recognize. If you've already completed the game, another photo will show up
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
with you, Sans and your friends.”
This emphasizes the possibility that Sans has SOME way of bringing physical items with him
across timelines. The machine, perhaps? Although Toby did say that “neither of them could ever
fix it”, whoever that is.
>the number of photos with Frisk and friends increases for each True Pacifist ending you’ve
achieved.
> Can we get a source for the above comment?
> Anyone tried to access San’s lab on a genocide run? Is it possible to obtain the key, or hack
the key in Genocide?
> As a reply to the above. It is possible to get into the secret room (not naturally by playing the
game though) on a genocide run (by editing your room in the undertale data files). I haven’t
tested but I believe it won’t be different. -boom
>I’d like to point out one thing Sans, Gaster, and Alphys have in common is the availability of
potato chips. Sans has them in his fridge, and Alphys in her secret lab that was probably close
to Gaster as his DT extractor is found there. Since Potato chips can only be acquired from the
Lab it’s evident that Sans had to have been there at some point in time.
4a.12: Fighting Gaster?
I’m looking through the rawr.wr site codes… Did anyone try fighting Gaster with the usage of
cheat engine maybe with that we could at least confirm his looks.
>I tried fighting gaster with cheat engine (encounter ID 666 according to the rawr site) it doesn’t
do anything (Undefined), it’s likely there as a joke. Also the IDs on the rawr site do not match
the ones on this doc (the ones on this doc are the correct ones).
>Interesting you say that… people wouldn't think to do that.
>How would you be able to fight gaster that way?
4a.14: Gaster’s ‘voice’
All characters have their own voice as well, so what is gasters “voice”? anyone have a sample
of it? and or is this it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3lF83_60cw
https://youtu.be/fpneLl7ohUs
> Unless all the Youtubers are ripping clips off of each other, I do believe that’s his voice.
Several videos have that same Wingdings/weird static-backed audio. I think someone once
compared it to the sound of a dialup, and he definitely sounds like that plus the static.
> I’d like to mention that sped up, it sounds like high-pitched squeals and a slightly higher
pitched squeal. Decreasing the pitch and reversing it makes it easier to understand as such.
> I’ve watched a recording of “ENTRY NUMBER 17” and listened to the “voice” that could be
Gaster and it sounds, at least to me, like very short sounds from the various text-to-speeches
used in abc_123_a.ogg (It is especially apparent in the original as opposed to the new one,
which is just laughter). -AR
4a.15: Gaster fight?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
In the strings file, around the enemy names section, at the very end, there’s a “Gaster”. Could
this be related to the softlocking battle? Has anyone managed to get any code itself decompiled
to see what’s actually going on there?
Just an enemy stub with stats, no sprites or actions; read the end:
http://rawr.ws/undertale/monsters
>Would be hesitant to trust that. Their monster values differ from ours in several places, and
ours are right.
4a.16: Gaster w/ Boss Monster SOUL
>Pretty sure that if there was a reset in the timeline when Gaster died, he would still be alive,
and there wouldn’t be an inbetween state that we perceive now..
>Flowey was created way after Gaster’s fall, so I think they’d just be. Dead. if something like
that would have caused it
>I’m not entirely sure if this is useful, but further above in the document it mentions hearing
someone speaking in mus_smile.ogg and saying things like
LET ME OUT, LET ME OUT (HEY) /THIS IS NOT AN EXPERIMENT
I'M BEGGING FOR HELP, I'M SCREAMING FOR HELP (HEY)
PLEASE COME LET ME OUT!
I'M DYING IN A CORE IN HOTLANDS!
And
“help me / this is not an experiment / im in the core / Hey, let me out / … “.
However these have been stated to possibly be irrelevant, but I believe it’s at least worth
entertaining the notion. -AR
>> As far as I can hear from the audio file, and from other people commenting on this info, it’s
just a fabrication.
4a.17: Gaster and quantum physics
It seems that Gaster is an excellent example of being both dead and not dead, a “Schrodinger’s
Skeleton” if you will. He is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere, as shown in the principle of
Quantum Noise: “In physics, quantum noise refers to the uncertainty of a physical quantity that
is due to its quantum origin” so his location is “uncertain” here uncertain means everywhere and
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
his “quantum origin” is falling into his invention (which I personally believe was a wonky
unfinished time machine).
> What if Gaster’s death is in fact him trying his time machine? A few things make me think that.
First, we don’t (I think) have any evidence that he fell. We only know that he died from an
experiment. “His life was cut short by an experiment”, he tried his time machine, and it failed. If
the broken machine in Sans’ lab is really a broken time machine, maybe it is there because it is
now unused because of Gaster’s death. Here’s the story: Gaster jumped in the time machine, it
failed, he died and was spread in time and space, because it is a time machine. After all, it could
be a good experiment? Thoughts?
> Doesn’t the NPC at L3 say “he fell into his own creation”?
> The creation is implied to be the CORE, as the NPCs also talk about how he created the
CORE. But it’s not outright stated.
addendum: it could be the dt extractor. i go into a little detail on this on my steam guide
comments.
> The time machine in Sans’ room could also be something Gaster was going to add to the core
but with the failure of it was never added. Makes me wonder that Sans, Gaster, and Papyrus
are all related.
> there are a lot of connections between gaster and the skelebros. some are mentioned here
(this is also its own theory, but that’s not the point), i make a few wingdings observations here.
> I’ve had the headcanon that he may have experimented with Determination, similar to Alphys,
considering that entry in the True Lab. Not 100% sure if his death has anything to do with
Determination, but he certainly resembles some of the Amalgamates. If that held any
significance, then that would explain why he looks all lopsided.
> @above: check out my theories for some similar connections.
>Connect to (4a.08)?
>Frisk fell into Undertale. Toby apparently fell too as he’s seen there. What if Gaster is simply
another developer who fell into the creation of undertale? Nuts right? But think Redacted is
when you insert yourself in a story. I know this theory is totally out there but it’s a lot of Fun to
think about.
4a.18: Sans and Papyrus are halves of Gaster
Combed through this, haven’t seen this brought up yet? Here’s the Gaster theory about Sans
and Papyrus being two halves of him. Thought it was worth noting, but it leaves out some pretty
important details; I don’t think it addresses and fits with everything his ‘followers’ have said
about him. If someone else would like to be more thorough with this theory and fill any gaps,
that would be neat to see.
>moving this here from 4a23 As a weird way to support this by looking at Gaster’s “weird head”
follower, his statement “Well I needn’t gossip. After all it’s rude to talk about someone who’s
listening.” This could be also a reference to Sans who is seen to be potentially following you
throughout your journey with his many appearances as well during the Shyren encounter.
>How is Gaster still existent while Sans and Papyrus exist though? If you get the room that
“Gaster” is in, nothing happens to Sans and Papyrus.
>They don’t seem to feel or notice anything much at all.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
4a.19: Gaster appearance spec
Some Gaster appearance spec from Agorakin on Reddit. tl;dr: “Therefore... Dr. W.D. Gaster
was probably the largest of the skeletons, nearer the size of Toriel, as a gentle Royal Goat
Scientist skeleton in a lab coat, with two little assistants. If you were to fight him, there would
likely be an unusual mix of falling fire magic and bones to start with, followed by powerful blaster
lasers when he gets desperate.”
Addendum: I want to add that I do think it’s logical to assume spr_mysteryman is Gaster,
but there are some good connections made in the thread.
<I think Gaster is far more likely to be redacted. You see The mystery man fits the description
perfectly accept one thing. He has a face. There is a grey NPC who says he’s holding a piece of
Gaster and if you look, it appears to be a face. A face that Redacted appears to be lacking. A
face that we know for a fact belongs to Gaster. The Mystery man may be related to Gaster as
he is on the trading card but I don’t think it proves that he is gaster. You see the DT extractor is
also on the card and that’s not Gaster is it?
4a.20: Gaster’s relation to Sans and Papyrus
Yet another note on the theory that Gaster is Sans (and Papyrus?)’s brother, as both Sans and
Papyrus are named after the fonts they speak in (comic sans and papyrus) and the community
(not to my credit) has broken down his name to possibly mean wing dings aster, which are the
names of 2 different fonts. let's note that Sans and Papyrus are the only ones we had seen so
far with this naming scheme. happy hunting.
>You have a point, so we’re keeping that in mind until we have anymore proof.
>Aster could also refer to a genus of flower. I feel like there is a theme here. Asgore, Asriel. All
start with As, and have a background and connection to flowers. Aster genus flowers are
generally purple though. However, on a color wheel, directly opposite of yellow. Perhaps I’m
overthinking things.
>Asteracea, however, is a family of flowers that includes the buttercup (Flowey is a buttercup,
and Chara poisoned Asgore with a buttercup)
> @above- Flowey is not actually a buttercup, he is a golden flower that appeared in the
underground after the death of Asriel and Chara. Buttercups were present in the underground
before, but they are poisonous. If the golden flowers were buttercups, Asgore would not be able
to make his tea from them.
> But that also goes without saying that we don’t know if he did or did not drink the tea before
the new Golden Flowers arrived. It was stated that Asriel’s essence was infused into the first
golden flower that sprouted.
> Although it is also worth noting here that there is a type of flower known as a “Golden Aster” at
least according to Wikipedia. And yes, those ones are yellow.
<in the Code Gaster is usually referred to as Aster. Probably because he knew people like us
would read it and do a search for the word Gaster. Removing the G would make Gaster harder
to find.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>its always possible, but there are also theories of gaster being sans and pappys dad. Not
100% sure if its true or anything, but i do personally believe this theory more than gaster being a
third brother
4a.21: Gaster’s name and connection to DT Extraction Machine
"Gaster" is a very curious name. It's already been suggested that the 'aster' part of his name
may be referencing a type of flower, as well as the Aster font. Does that mean his name can be
separated and extended to possibly form 'Golden aster', which is an actual thing in the botany
world? Does that imply a deeper connection between W.D. Gaster or his experiments and the
golden flowers in the game?
> Never thought of that. It’s very fitting and I both like and appreciate how it addresses my
annoyance over how ‘aster’ is the flower, but ‘Gaster’ is the name. Additionally, the scientific
names for genuses of flowers more colloquially referred to as ‘golden asters’ are chrysopsis
(a.k.a. golden asters) and heterotheca (a.k.a. golden asters, false goldenasters, camphorweed,
telegraph weed), according to Wikipedia. [They’re also used to make tea…] Not sure if either
bear any particular meaning.
Alphys’ entries on the golden flower experiments give some interesting details:
1. She says (5:35, ENTRY 7) “We’ll need a vessel to wield the monster SOULs”. Obviously,
that might not be a literal plural ‘we’, but who knows. I’ve already mentioned I believe
she and Sans are the ‘two’ whom Gaster refers to. And with the fact that Gaster was the
royal scientist before her, and her possibly working with his blueprints, who knows.
2. (5:45, ENTRY 7) “So then... What about something that’s neither human nor monster?”
(across from that entry and wall are the golden flowers.) It very much seems like she
thought of the idea, but phrased like that, the alternate possibilities are open.
3. (5:52, ENTRY 10) “experiments on the vessel are a failure.” Again, doesn’t state she’s
working alone? But it does seem more logical, in some ways, that she’s working alone;
her meltdown and eventual solving the problem of the amalgamate secret don’t have her
pulling anyone else in to blame? Then again, I’m sure Sans isn’t the only scientist who’s
capable of keeping secrets.
4. The DT Extraction Machine is tied to Gaster, iirc. It’s similar to the shape of the Gaster
Blasters (though their exact origins are a mystery, and up for speculation), for starters.
I’d personally say it’s possible both Gaster and Alphys have a hand in the DT experiments.
>Hey I noticed in a botany book I was reading that the Aster flower grows near Goldenrods.
Coincidence?
>The DT Extraction Machine and Gaster Blasters being related to Gaster are interesting in the
manner that it implies that Gaster has a goat-skull motif. What’s with that? Perhaps there’s bad
blood between Gaster and the Royal family.
> Another possibility is that they’re related? As with the Reddit post I linked below (though it’s for
a different theme, it provides good points), there are some interesting connections between
them. To paraphrase what they said:
1. One of the grey NPCs/’followers’ is called mkid_goner, which may relate/refer to Asriel’s
goat skull ‘Hyper Goner’ attack.
2. Sans’ Gaster Blasters also resemble goat skulls.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
3. The DT Extractor has a similar appearance to the aforementioned skulls (albeit without
the ears/horns of the Hyper Goner).
4. Omega Flowey’s head (if I can call that nightmare-inducing mass of flesh and maw a
‘head’) has a similar build to it, and the ‘mouth’ opens sideways not unlike the Blasters
(and Gyftrot’s head, for that matter). It also fires a laser beam if you hug the bottom of
the screen.
5. Gyftrot’s head also has a similar look to the skulls, and opens sideways.
There does seem to be some kind of relation between the skeletons and Boss
Monster/hoofbeast?? types. Their relationship could be negative or positive, but my personal
guess is that, at least when Gaster was working, they had a positive relationship. He was the
Royal Scientist, after all. But remember we know next to nothing about him except he was
brilliant, so if he had some dark ulterior motive with the royal goatfam, that would make things
very interesting.
> Also in relation to the similar skull shape- Could that just be a shape that is a result of high
levels of determination or power? As in, Flowey just absorbed 6 human souls, Asriel had the
power of seven souls, the Dreemurs are some of the strongest monsters in the game, and the
Gaster Blasters are also pretty powerful.
>Ok, so pretty solid evidence that the DT extraction machine was not only tied to Gaster, but
originally invented by him. In one of Alphys' entries, she says she used blueprints. I'm assuming
she's talking about having used them to make the extraction machine. I think the only person
who could have really made these had to have been Gaster. Since Alphys was talking about
working from blueprints, I think it would be unlikely that Gaster was working directly with her; at
least while she was doing these specific experiments.
ENTRY NUMBER 5: I've done it. Using the blueprints, I've extracted it from the human
SOULs. I believe this is what gives their SOULs the strength to persist after death. The
will to keep living... The resolve to change fate. Let's call this power... "Determination."
>The only place where blueprints appear outside true lab is on Sans’ secret room behind his
house
> Alphys also has blueprints in her lab, actually. I believe they’re related to Mettaton and his
body and SOUL.
> In response to the “bad blood” statement, I highly doubt there would be any long term
negative emotions between the Royal Scientist and the Royalty. I honestly think that this
aethstetic may have been chosen as a combination of the Royalty (The Boss Monsters who
appear to be anthropomorphic goats) and the Royal Scientist (Who we assume to be a
skeleton). In regards to the Omega/Photoshop Flowey, it was implied that he had fought (and
lost to) sans, and viewing him as a formidable enemy styled himself to take after one of his
unique weapons, the Gaster Blasters. -AR
>> Could we get a quote or a screenshot for that statement referencing their past battle?
4a.22: Uboa and Gaster
I don’t know if anyone had checked this out already, but Toby did a ROM hack of EarthBound; if
you scroll near the very bottom of this page, he used an edited version of that Uboa sprite in the

Giygas area (at least I think it is, I’ve never played EarthBound). What if much like Shyren, the
lower half of this NPC’s body is in fact a different entity… its even in the shape of the
determination extractor if you make his little hands eyes find instead of hands. Could that
potentially be Gaster’s head in the jaws of some creature?

4a.23: ‘important info’ from Sans on Tumblr post
I found this on the Undertale Tumblr page:
http://undertale.tumblr.com/post/130552032545/important-info
Assuming that Sans is the one speaking, can we assume that in the 4th paragraph “besides, it’s
rude to talk about people that are listening, right? not everyone is as tough as my brother.” Sans
is speaking of Gaster and calling him his brother? Or is this too much of a stretch.
(This is untrue, as if you read the rest of the post, Sans is talking about whoever wrote the post,
and he’s mentioning Papyrus saying no one is as tough as him.)
>This is probably a correct guess, because we see very similar text presented by the ‘weird
head’ gaster follower. In fact, almost the exact same text.
“Well, I needn’t gossip. After all, it’s rude to talk about someone that’s listening.”
>It’s definitely common knowledge that Sans often speaks highly of Papyrus, and he could just
be saying that not everyone is tough enough to take the criticism (an assumption, idk exactly the
context of this quote) but hey, you never know.
>Maybe we are thinking too much into it and sans just says “not everyone is as tough as my
brother” because of how, even if you insult him in his fight or say that you hate his “special style”
in his date, he takes it as a compliment and appreciates your honesty. In short, Sans just mixes
toughness with being innocent/naive.
> He may be referring to Gaster in the first sentence/question, and Papyrus in the latter. Not that
other possibilities don’t make sense.
> As a stretch, what if Dr. Alphys was Dr. WDG? All this “They’re watching” and “They’re
listening” makes me think of all the cameras that Alphys has set up.
4a.24: Sans, Papyrus, Gaster are same skeleton from diff AUs
What if Sans, Papyrus, and Gaster are all alternate universe versions of the same skeleton?
Gaster built a machine that could open travel between other timelines perhaps in hopes of
finding a universe where monsters weren't trapped underground, and found Sans and Papyrus,
two versions of himself from different timelines. He took them along to travel with him, because
why not save yourself. Kinda. Papyrus is too naive to understand any of this so he just
believes Sans to be long lost brother. Sans doesn’t say anything about it because that’s the
kind of person he is, willing to let Papyrus live all his fantasies, like Santa. However, something
broke in the machine that ended up trapping Sans, Papyrus and himself in the timeline of this
game. Gaster then goes to work as the royal scientist, still chasing his goal of freeing everyone,
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
and possessing way more knowledge than anyone else. He builds the core himself, possibly to
generate the power necessary to extract souls from monsters. If this is the case, he was not
successful, as Alphys still doesn’t have enough power. Sans attempts to repair the original
machine in his basement lab. He uses instruction Gaster wrote him, thus the note in strange
handwriting. Sadly, while working on his greatest creation, Gaster falls, shattering himself and
his research through space and time. Sans, having some understanding of Gaster’s research,
monitors the timelines, looking for a way to start jumping between them again, pursuing
Gaster’s original goal. He then detects the anomaly he talks about during his fight in the
Genocide Route. This also explains why he has the Gaster-Blaster attack. He is just another
version of Gaster after all. Also would explain why Sans and Papyrus suddenly showed up one
day, according to the Snowdin monsters. They were suddenly dropped into that timeline.
> Look at Gaster’s sprite’s eyes, then look at Sans’ battle sprite’s eyes. Notice anything?
They’re way too similar for it to be a coincidence. Gaster’s eyes are just Sans’ but sideways.
Gaster= Sans amalgamate? Assuming Sans worked with Alphys and Gaster and knowing that
Sans has time traveling abilities, the Gaster sprite could just be Sans after HE fell into the core.
The waterfall room could just be a “Shortcut” outside of space for Sans to recover or wait.
Please investigate.

4a.26: Gaster was trying to access the game files
I saw this theory on TV Tropes of all places and thought it made a lot of sense. Gaster was
trying to get rid of the barrier by getting rid of it in the game files and he accidentally coded
himself out of the game instead. What the player is doing when editing the “fun” values is
coding Gaster back into the game.
>(Cont. Of 4a.26) I like this theory because of the game “Hack n Slash”.
>Well, it’s said that he ‘fell into his creation’. If he fell into the machine he was using to access
the game files from inside, he could’ve fallen into them (the files), but outside of the actual
‘game’ being executed/played. It then makes sense that he is everywhere and nowhere, as he
could be in all materials, libraries and whatnot the game uses, but not in the executed/compiled
game world, if that makes any sense. It could also allow for him to listen, as (possibly) implied
by one of his followers, by analysing the game executable from outside or simply accessing the
strings file containing all dialogues. He could also modify those files, resulting in us seeing
things like ‘Entry Number 17’ scene, but as he didn’t really know what he was doing, the things
he can do are quite limited. Seeing that the game breaks the 4th wall so much, I think this
theory may have some potential. (sorry for my english if I made any mistakes)

4b: Sans
4b.01: Sans speculation/possibly human
It should also be noted that Sans is also the character chosen by Toby to carry out the “Dirty
Hacker” ending error-handling message. In addition, Sans is supposedly aware that it IS a
message, and that he is in a game (or at least some sort of program that someone made) in this
message. Curious as to whether or not achieving the “Dirty Hacker” ending affects your
gameplay in the future at all, possibly with Sans’ dialogue?
>Sans also actually has eyes. Papyrus just has black holes, but Sans has little dots.
>Another side note: sans bleeds. papyrus doesn’t. is sans really a skeleton? is he really papyrus
brother? or is this from determination? (or spaghetti, but that would be dumb and unlikely)Sans
can breathe. he does during the fight and plays the trombone. he’s probably not a skeleton.
>I read an explanation about the blood, it was because sans drinks ketchup like water, that’s
why he “bleeds”, but i didn’t think in the trombone and the air, so, it is REALLY blood, then?,
nice observation.(also he can close his eyes somehow)
>The bleeding is claimed to be from Ketchup in sans post-fight dialogue.
also i don’t remember that ever happening.
If you refuse Sans offer of ketchup when he takes you to Grillby’s then he drinks the whole
ketchup bottle.
> If it is Ketchup and not blood, why is it coming out of his mouth? One might say it is because
he drinks Ketchup, but as a skeleton, the Ketchup should be visible on his shirt/bones after he
gets up from the table after drinking Ketchup during the Grillby’s conversation in Pacifist run.
There should at least be Ketchup on the collar of his shirt/jacket and/or his collarbone as well as
his shoes/lower leg/foot. As a skeleton, Sans should not be able to hold the Ketchup in his body
due to a lack of organs. See image below:
>> The monster with big teeth in Grill Bys says that monsters covert food in energy right after
they eat it and doesn’t pass through their bodies like humans. So if Sans is a monster he should
still be able to eat anyway.
Link> hehe. Best copout: MAAAAGIIIC
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
> That being said: In doing the Sans fight again, does he sweat? And here’s Sans “bleeding”.
> Some of these things could very well be anomalies, as Papyrus also does things that one
would not think skeletons could do. When fighting him, his eye-sockets become actual eyes on
hit, and he cries at the end of the pacifist run. Alphys also sweats, and it is known that only
mammals sweat, and since Alphys has scales (as we know from her scale cream) she is clearly
not a mammal. In short, all the characters do things they shouldn’t be able to do.
>Scale cream was meant to be a gift to Undyne, from Alphys; i.e not for Alphys
Either way, Papyrus sweats too, and Flowey sweats, and most of the characters in the game
sweat. Also, in the official art of Sans, it shows the bottom of his leg bones coming out of his
shoes.
>HOWEVER: Why is Sans the only character that bleeds? Why is Sans the only “monster” that
doesn’t turn to dust when defeated? If Sans was able to stand and survive after a fatal blow, it is
possible he may have DETERMINATION. Recall that Undyne the Undying was able to survive a
fatal blow due to DETERMINATION, but she melted when defeated again due to her monster
body being unable to handle the high DETERMINATION. If Sans has DETERMINATION, but
did not melt from it, it is possible that he is not a monster and may in fact be a human. It’s also
possible that both Sans and Undyne were experimented on with DETERMINATION. Both their
left eyes glow, but Sans’s eye is more “focused” (i.e it doesn’t shoot lasers in random places)
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
and he doesn’t turn to dust upon death, as shown before. In this way Undyne could have been a
“failed” experiment and Sans a “completed” one.
> To add to the original side note, a person goes a little more into detail about the possibility of
the blood/ketchup being Determination here.
Addendum @original points further above: Sans drinking juice/a smoothie/something? It goes
right through him, and his clothes and the lawn chair, for that matter. Don’t know what to say
except Sans is weird.
> Is the Sans drinking thing canon? Can someone give a context to how that happens?
> It’s an ‘UNDERTALE Reward Tiers Explanation’ from Toby. Unlisted. It’s hilarious, though. As
the title suggests, it’s a video explanation of the Kickstarter reward tiers, featuring Sans and
Papyrus.
> Could that be Sans starting to melt, and not sweat. And we never actually see him turn to
dust, he is off screen for that, even though the sound does play.
> we already know too much determination makes monsters melt due to their lack of physicality,
being made up more of magic than physical matter. there are also ties between sans and dt
(won’t get into that here, but it’s been talked about on the doc), including a theory that involves
the point saying sans might’ve been a dt experiment himself. tl;dr: i agree with the ‘melting’
thing.
> Something else to note about the Sans fight. At the second attack, Sans says “We’ve noticed
a massive anomaly in the space time continuum…”
Who is we in this sentence? All the other characters seem to have no idea what’s going on with
the saving and determination and such. Even Undyne, who experiences it, can’t explain it.
Could he be talking about Gaster and himself here?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>Question: When Sans is defeated, why does he say “Come on Papyrus, let’s go to Grillby’s”. Is
it because he is trying to come to terms with his brother’s death and is in denial? Is he in denial
that he is the last monster left? Is he making a reference to the fact that he knows that the
player will just reset and everything will be the way it was? Is Papyrus somehow still alive?
Maybe something went over my head, but I feel like this statement has been a bit overlooked.
> I personally believe it’s a mix of him knowing a RESET is pretty much inevitable, but also a
mix of denial and grief. I mean, one reason for his lazy front is a lack of hope from being
temporally aware. Even then it must suck to know he’s in a timeline where everyone dies,
including his brother whom he cares for very much. I don’t think it’s possible that Paps is alive
because he turns into dust after he is killed.
>> ALSO before Undyne, the Pap call in the snail farm can be quoted as saying
Papyrus: THESE SNAILS ARE JUST LIKE MY BROTHER. ROUND, SLOW... AND
CONSTANTLY EMITTING SLIME???
Papyrus: EMITTING SLIME... THAT'S JUST WHAT BROTHERS DO.
There’s a definite difference between sweat being watery and ANY slime. It’s enough to
convince me it’s DT.
>After replaying the game for a while, a quote from sans made me think. He actually says “ You
must really wanna go home. “ “ I know the feeling, buddy. “ Huh ? That’s kinda strange. If he
really is a monster, and not a boss monster, he shouldn’t be able to live long enough to know
what was the world before the barrier was created, either that, or i’m missing something. What
do you guys think ? -- Actually, a friend of mine told me it might be because of his probable
time-machine. Still, it does feel strange to me. -- Also, now that i think about it, it might be
related to his “ Give up “ and his “I stopped trying to go back a long time ago. “ ( Or something
like that ). Either that, or it’s something related to Gaster that only him can remember.
> We don’t know much about monster life spans, nor do we know about which monsters were in
the war or not with the exception of Gerson (the Hammer/turtle shopkeeper). Chara falls into the
underground on 201X, and some of the characters’ online handles end with numbers that could
allude to years (e.g., Papyrus’ is COOLSKELETON95). But this doesn’t tell us much about the
ages despite the trend of adding your birth year to your alias, because we don’t know what year
it is when Frisk falls into the underground. All we know is that most monsters can’t even
recognize a human when they see it (with exceptions like Asgore). So while we can infer things
like Toriel and Asgore are adults, there’s nothing specific. We don’t even know when the war
was, just that it was probably a long while ago and eight humans have fallen down since then.
My point is, as stupid as this might sound at the end of a messy ramble, Sans could very much
have been around for the war.
...I have no idea what that could mean in the context of his words, though. Perhaps if he
did live in the overworld for some time, he had a home there and that’s how he can relate to
Frisk? That’s more or less what I’m saying.
>Am I the only one who finds it strange that Sans uses colloquialisms such as “burning in hell”
and “get dunked on.” (I think there are a few others but I can’t think of the off the top of my
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
head.) If he isn't human, then he could have had contact with the other humans that taught him
those phrases, or I am overthinking things.
> (moved the above comment to a more relevant section) seeing as monsters and humanity
were connected in the past, it would make sense that cultural elements from humanity still linger
with the monsters. as i state in the comment above this short chain, it’s possible sans was
around to know other humans, maybe even before the war due to the general vagueness of his
age.
>Interesting fact, in French, Sans means without, and “without” in wingdings 2 is “300” a weird
symbol, then “610”. I don’t know if these numbers might mean anything to anyone, but here they
are.
> There a lot of French sentence/catchphrase in this game. And also a very accurate “joke” with
Toriel name -> “tutoriel” in French mean “tutorial” but also can be read has “Tue Toriel” -> “Kill
Toriel” … maybe just a coincidence but … Does anyone know if Toby speak French ?
>Knight Knight also says adieu during her battle, more french, anyone know someone who
speaks french that has played the game and may have recognized more words?
> I’m French. I can list the full french sentence i found during my play. (A lot of monster use 1 or
2 words in French).
> I’m a French-speaking American. I could do a play through if there’s any means of getting the
French version in the states.
>Things to note: Sans is not the only monster that does not turn to dust. Tsunderplane does not,
they explode. Mettaton does not turn to dust either, and if i can remember correctly, neither
does Glad Dummy. Sans is also not the only one to mention “hell” or things of that nature, for
several of the characters mention things like “Oh my god.”
> I read somewhere that Toriel said “Hell” then immediately replaced it with “Heck”, and also
something about her not being above cursing, just sparing the innocence of children.
> I’m french too, and I’ve been very careful about french words.Sans do mean “ Without “
>I’ve noticed that Sans never has a health bar.
>That’s pretty interesting. I think it’s still unknown the HP (not DF) of sans and now that you
mention it, not even in the FIGHT menu (the HUD) shows the green bar of his HP, nor at the
fatal blow.
This came to me while reading the above comments in this section, and I just realized
something. We never see Sans’ body below his head. There’s something under his hoodie, but
it could easily just be a shirt. It’s possible, that Sans actually has most of his human body intact.
4b.02: Sans’ lab
>Okay, so when you get access to the lab behind the Papyrus and Sans’ house, It tells you
“there is a picture of you and Sans, with someone you don’t recognize”, or something similar.
Entry 17 says something about “what do you two think?”. That might be aimed towards Frisk
and Sans, rather than Sans and Papyrus, or Toriel and Asgore, as some people might think
What do you guys think?...
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>> (Wrong: The specific quote you find in Sans’s lab is "(There are photos of Sans with a lot of
people you don't recognize.)" There’s no mention of you / Frisk being in the picture, and Frisk
would have pointed it out if they were there.)
>>> I would like to add: I haven’t checked personally but there’s a lot of people saying that if you
go back to the san’s machine room and check the place of the photos, you can read
>>(It could also be Sans and Alphys before she became Royal Scientist.)
>>> Unlikely, because it is impossible to access the machine room without having seen Alphys
at least once before. If it was her, the text would have pointed it out.
> @The original point: I personally think he’s talking to Sans and Alphys because 1. they’re the
only two characters (besides Gaster himself) whom we know have a scientific background and
2. to supplement that, it’s heavily implied if not confirmed (I don’t want to say for sure because
it’s not outright stated, but the implication is strong) that Alphys and Sans know each other (at
the end of true paci, but before Alphys can confirm, Sans interjects after the ‘do you know
Sans?’ question w/ ‘doesn’t everybody?’).
> (added the comment above to the chain to reply) it’s possible there were other
scientists/subjects whom sans and the others worked with and possibly befriended. there is a
fairly solid theory about the memoryhead actually being an amalgamate of various skeletons,
which may connect to the theory of sans being a dt experiment himself. what i’m saying is, there
could’ve easily been others to take a picture with. others whom frisk would not recognize.
>>This still isn't possible since Frisk doesn't recognize anyone in the photo besides Sans.
4b.03: Sans using Gaster font
Another thing to note is that Sans seems to be the only one of the two skeletons to exhibit both
these fonts, wingdings being referred to once you reach Sans’s work zone, where it makes
mention of something like “strange, unreadable symbols” on his papers. Aster can be seen
when he falls asleep in the genocide fight, his Z’s becoming the Aster font. Also, both these
fonts are only used when Sans is either alone (in his lab, so to speak) or asleep, or more
decisively never around the player while knowing it. Also, the strange machine in Sans’s lab is
noteworthy if it hasn’t already been mentioned, since Sans seems to have the strongest ties to
Gaster (these fonts plus his use of the Gaster Blaster during the genocide fight) and could very
well be Gaster himself, perhaps trying to hide his true identity. Due to Sans’s machine and
Gaster’s creation of the Core, they both clearly have some kind of affinity to science.
> The Aster font is the serif one that appears when Sans falls asleep during geno, but is there a
specific font for his z’s when he’s asleep at his Hotland post at the end of Undyne’s chase?
(6:45 here) It’s a sans serif font that doesn’t look much like Comic Sans, but I’m doubtful of its
significance considering it’s only one letter. Then again, minor details don’t always stay that
way.
> Those z’s are pretty tough to put a font behind, considering they’re only a few pixels in size. I’ll
definitely look into it, though.
>Im also pretty sure that a similar looking “Z” is used in the official steam artwork, but since it’s
not really IN the game i don’t know if that’s relevant or not
> I assume you mean the picture where Sans has the untied sneakers and there’s a spotlight on
one of the Undertale wallpapers for Steam profiles? Similar Aster Z’s are indeed used there.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>> Based on how the picture looks, I’d say that was more of a stylistic choice since the Zs were
made to look like Skeleton bones.
>Isn’t the main font Aster?
>is it ever actually confirmed that it's "his" papers? It could be Gaster's for all we know
4b.04: Sans’ Teleportation
>It seems that Sans teleportation is unique in the game (assuming Flowey is just capable of
moving underground). It can easily be put aside as powerful magic, but even then something
seemed off to me. It is possible that his ability to teleport is a reference or result of his scientific
background (especially in Quantum physics). The reason for this connection has to do with the
specific idea of Quantum tunneling, where an electron (or some other thing) passes through a
barrier it otherwise cannot pass. This was brought up to me when discussing continuous
functions and how people and other big things are continuous. Maybe magic is not continuous?
Maybe all monsters are capable of this teleportation if they combine science and magic. I put
this here because even if this doesn’t lead directly to Gaster, it may mean that Toby put clues of
the more scientific kind for his more scientific characters like Sans and Gaster.
4c: True Lab/Experiments
4c.01: True Lab Generator
https://ssl-forum-files.fobby.net/forum_attachments/0040/4296/uhu.png
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
There is definitely something odd about the generator in the last room of the true lab. The one
that has the red heart on it (similar to the soul casing on Mettaton) and it has a clear face
towards the top. Is the machine powered with parts of a soul? - Once you turn this generator on,
you receive a phone call in the next room with a voice you have never heard before, thanking
you for everything going correctly. (>The elevator voice (“A voice you have never heard
before.”) is Hyperdeath Asriel’s. You can listen in this playthrough - elevator @6:06 and one of
his fight clips @19:29)
- My theory on this was that perhaps Chara’s soul is being used in this machine to power the
true lab/CORE. Their soul seems to be missing from the game, though it seems Chara may be
soulless.
> Is there anything supporting this? Besides Chara’s “harsh” nature.
> If there really is a human soul inside the generator, why wouldn't the monsters keep it to
destroy the barrier? It seems strange that it would be re-purposed.
- The Generator could also be a prototype of Mettaton’s body, being used for a different
purpose.
- Just after switching on the generator, the screen messages have a red smile on them rather
than green text, same colour as the red heart/soul on the machine.
It should also be noted that it’s the same red as Chara’s “memories” when in New Home on a
Genocide run
>> Has anyone noticed how the soul is a darker red than Frisk’s and the other souls? This
theory actually comes from the YouTube channel Underlab, but it’s theorized that the soul in
that machine is actually dead, all the determination it once had was sucked out of it and used for
the determination experiments.
>Is all of that in a genocide run? I never saw that in pacifist, although I could have missed
things.
maybe i missed something, but wasn’t there a DT extractor machine in the true lab? who did
they extract the DT from again? was it charas dead body? or again am i misunderstanding
something. there were a few other kids as well..
>interesting Theory. I would like to see more of this theory or similar later on.
>I think Alphys extracted the DT from the monsters in an attempt to reverse them melting from
too much DT for their souls to handle
> I don’t think determination could’ve been extracted from Chara given that Asriel absorbed their
soul to pass the barrier, and then died shortly afterwards. Besides, Chara’s soul is never directly
seen anywhere throughout the game. I believe it is far more likely for the Determination to be
extracted from some of the other human souls collected, as a date for Alphys’ experiments are
never given, I think. (This response is probably completely wrong).
> ENTRY NUMBER 5: I've done it. Using the blueprints, I've extracted it from the human
SOULs. I believe this is what gives their SOULs the strength to persist after death. The will to
keep living... The resolve to change fate. Let's call this power... "Determination."
Plural ‘SOULs’. The implication seems to be that she extracted it from the various fallen
humans’ souls?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>One of the lab entries also mentions that she returned the ‘vessel’ (created from the first flower
that grew from the area where Asriel’s ashes fell, likely imbued with whatever was left of his soul
then injected with DETERMINATION. Note the assignment on monster funerals for information
regarding afterlife beliefs in the Snowdin Library), and the SOUL’s (again plural) to ASGORE
before the other monsters injected with DETERMINATION fused together to create the
amalgams.
>The voice mentioned in the original theory above, while sounding like Hyperdeath Asriel, could
not have been Hyperdeath Asriel. The game was not to the point of Hyperdeath Asriel coming
into fruition yet. Yes, it fits because “a voice you have not heard before” would match up to
Asriel when you meet him later in the game, never having met him before. However, as I will say
again, Hyperdeath Asriel was not created because Flowey had not absorbed all the souls. So
who could it really be?
> From the ending of genocide route, just before Chara kills Flowey, he is shown to be able to
imitate voices, not just faces, when he switches to his Asriel ‘voice’. It’s possible he did the
same thing here.
>It’s the same tone as child Asriel.
> Child Asriel has a higher-pitched voice, which can also be heard in places like Chara’s
flashback in Waterfall.
>I have pointed this out quite few times to people and everyone says that it is Asriel or Flowey.
I do not believe this. EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. in this game has a very particular voice
and that is not their voices. This is a voice that you have never heard before and do not hear in
the game except at this exact point. I have seen people mention that it's quite similar to
Hyperdeath Asriel but I don't believe it. Not unless it's confirmed an audio bug or it's an exact
duplicate.
> as i’ve mentioned before, i’m still sure it is hyperdeath asriel. i’ve wondered about the original
point above before, because it’s true we never hear flowey using that voice. but at the end of
geno, before you kill him, he does take on asriel’s face (not the voice). though, flowey does a
few different voices, so it’s not a stretch to say he could replicate, y’know, his OWN voice.
asriel’s voice here, hyperdeath asriel’s voice here, call here. unless my hearing is going, those
are the same voice blips.
>Sans is also shown to be able to replicate Toriel’s voice in the resturant in the MTT hotel.
> it’s not exact, just his own voice blips but higher-pitched.
> In listening to the call and Hyperdeath Asriel’s “voice” they sound the same to me and any
difference between them could be explained in the fact that you are using a cell phone in a
location that would presumably have terrible reception or that he may not be using a phone at
all and somehow used magic to call you. -AR
>I’ve listened to all three, Asriel’s voice sounds like a higher pitched version of Hyperdeath
Asriel, maybe. But I do agree that Hyperdeath Asriel’s and the phone’s voice are the same.
4c.02: Chara and Frisk’s relationship
Ideas on relationship between Chara and Frisk? I’ve seen people refer to it as possession, but I
think there’s support for them to be two routes for Chara’s corpse injected with DT to take. e.g.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Alphy’s monitoring (you can find cameras in points like behind the first bush outside the ruins),
sans comment about pretending to be human, Chara’s missing soul (although the coffin is still
closed) (potential “tunnels” originally seen in demo seem to have disappeared though)
>Alphys’ monitoring might be unrelated to Chara. As the royal scientist, she probably has to
keep track of all humans for Asgore. Or maybe just has cameras for some other science thing.
>Wasn’t Chara’s coffin open in Genocide mode? Or maybe it was after a certain event that it
opened
>> Yes it was open at the end of Genocide.
> @Second point: I’m pretty sure Alphys’ cameras relate to her giant monitor in her not-true
Lab. She watches Frisk go about their journey. It isn’t stated if there was any specific purpose
prior to Frisk’s arrival, but I’d wager she used it to watch anime and cartoons a lot of the time -
though not necessarily all the time.
>> This is unrelated, but I have to wonder if she posted our progress through the underground
on Undernet (or whatever that social network was), as she does seem to post about it after we
leave the not-true lab
>What makes you think that Frisk is Chara’s corpse injected with DT? We have proof that Frisk
ISN’T Chara, because Asriel says so. Also, their soul isn’t there because Asriel absorbed it,
then died.
>Chara is likely soulless in the genocide run, since, as mentioned, their soul was absorbed by
Asriel. Which is also why Chara needs Frisk’s soul. Post genocide, Frisk is Chara, pre genocide,
Chara is likely to be like Gaster, simply an entity watching the events of the game, manipulating
Flowey into manipulating Frisk. (this got really messed up, first time editing a public doc, please
clean up.)
> (don’t worry about it, cleanup is simple.) i can only speculate on the relationship between
chara and frisk, but there is evidence of chara actually being around for the game. all of it. in the
flavour text and all the options you are given. their memories falling into the underground, being
saved by asriel - those aren’t yours, those aren’t frisk’s. they’re chara’s memories. i assume
that, for some reason, they’re showing you. perhaps to impart some kind of message or
knowledge. you're not the one who knows asriel well enough to SAVE him; chara is. chara’s
presence is really only made clear in red flavour text and, of course, the genocide route’s lovely
finale.
it’s very important not to demonize chara and automatically assume that all their actions
are malevolent. they’re a kid who was angry at humanity. the reason they climbed mt. ebott, as
put by asriel, was not very happy. people are said never to return from this place. i think chara
wanted to disappear, get away from some kind of crap related to humanity and its faults, or -
and i say this with complete seriousness - they wanted to commit suicide.
then they found a family. you have to remember the dreemurrs loved chara. if even asriel
can point out that chara ‘wasn’t the nicest person’, we can assume that toriel and asgore could
see their faults, too. some assume chara was plotting to kill them, right under their noses, but
that’s hard to believe. one slash with a stick or a toy knife - not a real weapon, mind you - can
kill toriel, one of the boss monsters whom chara lived with and thus could’ve easily killed to
absorb their SOUL. but they didn’t. chara chose to commit suicide via buttercup poisoning, a
very long and very painful way to die. they chose to get sick slowly before dying for asriel to
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
continue the plan. maybe they wanted to kill all the humans in the village just to kill them, maybe
to absorb their SOULs to break the barrier. we don’t know; all we know is that asriel held chara
back from doing so.
tl;dr: chara’s a sad, angry kid. their presence can be noted in the entire game. whether
it’s helpful or not is up to your actions, as the player, to decide. i see frisk as the bridge not only
between humans and monsters (if you choose to free the underground), but as the bridge
between you and chara, who provides you with the options to SAVE the world or to destroy it.
>> It isn't confirmed, but it's suggested by Asriel that Frisk might have tried the same thing. But
of course, there's nothing else suggesting it or confirming/denying it from what I can find. It's
been speculated by some that I've chatted with that Chara did that as part of a plot to try and
free Monsters, this can be supported by the conversations between Asriel and Chara in the
tapes found in the True Lab. As I understand it, they were going to fake a death, (well, real
death) where Asriel takes Chara's soul, crosses the barrier, and then takes 6 other souls from
the surface to break the barrier once and for all. Something goes wrong, and Asriel, being the
more kindhearted of the two, refuses to kill anyone.
4c.03: Chara (soulless) used Sans, Undyne, and Frisk as hosts
I just had another thought for a theory that i'm just going to throw at the wall again. so, with the 8
humans going to the underground, only 6 had been captured. Frisk lived, but Chara died, and
their soul was absorbed by Asriel. my question is where did Chara’s soul go? Now here’s my
quick theory. Chara not once shows their face in pacifist or neutral playthroughs, and their
presence is never evident. Flowey and Undyne have been known to exhibit the powers of
determination at some point, but Flowey was only able to because they absorbed Chara’s soul
as Asriel. Also consider the fact that Sans is not only aware of resets, but also suggests some
ability to time travel, could this suggest some level of determination? ALSO: Chara only shows
their face shortly after your fight with Sans, only to erase the world as we know it. Now, what if
Chara after their soul was lost from then-dead Asriel had found their way into a new host,
possibly fragmenting their soul along the way. perhaps it was originally used in Sans (time
machine) but that broke (thus Sans “giving up on going back”), leaving some of their soul
residually on Sans, while they sought out someone with a violent arrogant and passionate heart,
who would be undyne. once these two are killed, chara is finally whole again inside frisk, who is
the one who proved their strength in killing these hosts. thus shortly afterward the emergence
and so on. Could this theory hint towards the motive for whatever device sans had created? it
might be a stretch but this could be a lead.
>Potential support that Sans has some sort of time travelling ability: In the area near Snowdin
(Gyftrot area/Area number 61), Sans appears in 2 places in this area, with both appearances
just out of sight of the other. This suggests that Sans is still somehow moving between these
two spots without walking directly in between. Due to the layout of the area, going under or over
the path would not be possible. Perhaps Sans has the ability to time travel or warp. During the
Sans fight, one series of attacks involves starting and stopping various parts of different attacks.
During each switch in attack, Sans warps to another position on the screen, supporting the
evidence that Sans has some form of warping ability. Potential connection to Gaster? Possible
Gaster experiment?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
ANOTHER REALIZATION TO THIS THEORY: both of the aforementioned characters that may
serve as a vessel for chara show in the genocide run different traits in their eyes, but only one.
undyne fires lasers out of her eye, while sans begins glowing. Could these 2 separate eyes be
evidence of the fragmented soul?
> Mettaton NEO also has a similar eye quirk (his right, which is covered by hair in his EX form,
has a sparkle(?) in it). A person makes potential determination/eye-related connections here.
>All three of these characters have their right eyes covered at some point. Sans winks with his
right eye, Mettaton EX’s right eye is covered, and Undyne has an eyepatch on her right
eye.-Esther
>> The interesting thing is though, that Mettaton EX doesn’t last for more than one hit, unlike the
other two that have this trait
>Interesting theory. If Asriel really did have Chara’s soul, when he gets the other 6, he would be
able to break the barrier right then and there, rather than worrying about Frisk. I can Understand
the Undyne part, but some monster souls are stronger than others and exhibit power similar to
determination. could Undyne be a boss monster?
regardless he could pass through the barrier, as seen when he had chara’s soul. I’m going to
have to dig around a bit to see if there's any account of anyone else ever crossing the barrier
>> I think it goes further than that, since the other boss monsters don't last more than one hit on
a genocide run. The only "boss" monsters that last more than hit are Undyne (Undyne the
Undying) and Sans. It's been speculated, though not supported as far as I can find, that Undyne
might have some determination, as might Sans.
>>Because why would he want to break the barrier? He wanted Frisk there.
>>Undyne is not a boss monster as there are only 3 shown in the game. It's said that only Boss
monsters can absorb human souls (And vice-versa). Asriel is the son of two boss monsters and
in both instances where you kill Toriel and Asgore, their souls remain after they die. Not the
case with Undyne as she simply melts as well as her soul along with it.
>And if Undyne it’s part of Alphys’ experiments?, like, some descendant of other monster victim
of it or maybe, something similar. (She melts when you kill her)
>>I don’t know how Undyne got determination but it is stated that ALL of Alphy’s experiments
melted. Entry Number 17 says that EVERYONE melted. I feel like she would have noted an
exception.
>>>Undyne DID melt after her boss fight in Genocide. It is possible she was injected with
DETERMINATION when she was preparing to fight Frisk.
>Somewhere throughout the game, I think in Waterfall, it is stated that it would take every soul
of every monster to reach the power of one human soul; Since Asriel had the six Human souls
and every soul of every monster, he had enough power to break the Barrier.
>Asriel didn’t take Napstablook’s soul though.
>ghosts don’t have souls.
>Except that Asriel did not absorb all the monster souls. When you go back after the Asriel
battle and talk with Napstablook they say that they don't "go with the light and stay mix music". It

bother me because i don't think it's just a "joke statement" in this game. But i can't understand
the meaning of that.
> In my first playthrough I fought Napstablook but he said something like “You do know you
can’t actually kill a ghost, right?” It makes me think that ghost souls are more… inaccessible?
Which might have been the only reason why he had an ‘option’ to not go with the light. Are
ghosts a different type of monster, or does a monster become one after death? All we know is
that a ghost can inhabit a different body (say, a dummy. or Mettaton.)
> I’m pretty sure Waterfall’s walls say it would take almost every SOUL, or similar, but not every
single one. Which is why Asriel wouldn’t need every SOUL to shatter the barrier, just most of
them. When Final Power plays and he has all the SOULs swirling around him, we can assume
he does indeed have most of the underground’s SOULs. Those SOULs then in turn equate to
one human SOUL, and he is able to shatter the barrier with the power of seven SOULs.
>Perhaps it wouldn't need EVERY soul, because these ruins were written a long time ago
(stated by how you can barely make them out), and also by many of the monsters stating that
the underground is becoming overpopulated. Because of this growth, it might not take all
monster souls to equal one human one.
4d: Monsters
4d.01: Shyren is an amalgamate
Note on shyren- I’m guessing all have read that tumblr post as of now about shyren’s lower
body, I’m just going to throw this out into the wind but i noticed that during my victory lap, and in
the credits as well, shyren’s head was the only part of her shown. her body was nowhere to be
seen. As a test, upon killing shyren, only her head ends up being destroyed. so my thought here
is this: are shyren’s head and body two separate monsters? If so, why would this be. (the
following are dumb theories i'm just gonna throw at the wall) 1: shyren is an amalgamation from
early experiments with determination that eventually led to gaster’s demise in some way.
>Her body is actually her talent agent. It’s named that in the assets.
> It’s named shyren_agent - doesn’t mention ‘talent’, iirc.
>> what is the head called?
> And, if you attempt to hurt any of the amalgamates this happens. And since you can kill
shyren (at least upper body) there goes the theory.
>> I took the gif you provided and broke it apart into the frames. I don’t know if this means
anything to anyone, but this is what it says, in order, at least to the extent that the gif played out.
( | = new line) “Absorbed | I'm lovin' it. | Absorbed | I'm lovin' it. | nope | I'm lovin' it. | nope |

It could mean nothing for all I know.
4d.02: Naming self Shyren
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Writing Shyren as player name ends with message “...?” and it allows you to play. Unsure if
changes anything.
4d.03: Shyren geno fight
Possibly irrelevant, but since there’s been some focus/speculation on Shyren, I thought I’d link
this text that someone claimed to get while humming at Shyren on a genocide-turned-neutral
run. Boat Person watching, maybe? http://imgur.com/IMgHiir Also for people interested, here’s a
link to what Shyren’s remaining body looks like.
>> Sans is my very first thought.
>>> Well, doesn’t Sans start selling tickets if you haven’t killed Papyrus?
>>>Yes, out of toilet paper. Also to talk about the hooded figure, Sans probably has a hood due
to his constant wearing of his jacket, although the River person could still be a candidate.
For those who are going through the songs, I assume you’ve gone through one's Shyren has.
Did anyone notice (who am I kidding, tons of people most likely have) there’s a small “song” at
the inn? (Snoring) Could be nothing, but figured to mention.
>The song is ‘Determination’
4d.04: Lemon Bread amalgamate
have you guys seen this before:
http://i.imgur.com/0981uIG.png
http://i.imgur.com/uN0ywhK.png
http://i.imgur.com/RNeuuTI.png
I ran into that at the walkaround after my pacifist run. I haven’t seen mention of it elsewhere. It’s
Shyren’s head alone with a grey blobby thing, that if you talk to fills the screen with text. It cycles
between those 3 messages. “it’s good to be with my sister again.” (I presume Shyren) “Part of
me wants to see my new ‘brother’ Aaron” “But most other parts of me don’t”. I have never edited
code and just played through normally. I have not
checked my fun code to see if it’s capital or not and what the number is.
Sorry if this was something commonly seen, I just haven’t heard it mentioned, and it could tie to
that post about Shyra.
>There might be something that relates to Aaron, since there’s unique text for the name Aaron
and Shyren.
>Aaron and Shyren, along with Moldbygg, form to make the Lemon Bread amalgamate in the
true lab. Here’s an image comparison: http://imgur.com/NtF452n
>Last line could be a reference to Moldbygg being spared by you respecting its boundaries, and
Shyren’s shyness. Shyren is shy and Moldbygg is worried that Aaron won’t respect its
boundaries.
4d.05: Shyren’s ‘lower body’
also regarding toby’s comment on paying attention to shyren’s lower body, i noticed i can't find
any way to make her face me in any fight, perhaps this is important as we never see the front of
her body? some digging through game sprites might yield interesting result i wanna s on this.
maybe.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Interesting.
>Perhaps this is too obvious but did anyone else notice the tumblr post mentioning Shyren also
seems to be written in napstablook’s voice? Maybe a connection worth looking into…
> It’s written in Sans’ voice - he makes a bone pun, mentions his brothers, and doesn’t use as
many periods/ellipses as Napstablook.
4d.06: Shyren post-true paci, is an amalgamate
(discussed in 4d.01)
4d.07: Shyren post-death
I can also confirm that when you kill Shyren, only the “head” dies and “body” doesn’t. As a
matter of fact it turns around facing you, looking confused and battle ends. Not sure if that is
important, though.
>Very interesting. Keep up the work. Who knows, there might be something we aren't seeing
with the shyren thing.
>another note, the back spikes and arm on shyren are actually eyes and a mouth and this only
becomes evident after killing her.
>Supposedly, in the game files, her body is named “shyren_agent”, which might imply it’s her
talent agent. Also in Mettaton’s poster, you can see both of them separately enjoying the show:

> @Original point: Clip of Shyren’s death as described above.
>>In that clip it says “It’s a storm of socks”. There is a storm of socks in sans’ room. This may
support the theory that the “Hooded Figure” is sans.
Those without blame probably refers to a pacifist playthrough, and someone eat a damn donut
during the shyren fight and see what happens
>Nothing happens
4d.08: Shyren and agent are angler fish
Shyren seems to be based on an angler fish. When mating anglerfish males stick to the females
and they eventually ‘melt together’ to become one body for the rest of their lives. - this site
probably explains it in the simplest way (and pretty fun way too) - so the male’s lips become
fused with the female’s body before he dissolves into her and becomes part of her body. -
Getting back to Shyren’s lower half, it’s quite clear that this ‘thing’ has big lips that shyren
herself balances on top of, this could be the male angler fish (‘agent’) fusing with the female
(shyren)
>> I do not think this is the case, as male anglerfish latch onto the female, but in the Shyren
fight you can clearly see her floating over the what I will refer to as the “Agent”
>>> Another speculation of shyren. she is a fish person, and there are fish people (example
Undyne), some fish need to be together to live, so once the head dies, the body, without its host
it dies with it too or maybe is confused (just like when you Aaron)? maybe the test subjects were
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
the two separated fish people, the angler fish and the Ceratoid, being tested with the
“DETERMINATION” thus making them fuse?
4d.09: Shyren fight trigger (y-coord)
On the topic of Shyren, in her room this tile (left of Frisk) has been annoying me ever since I
saw it for the first time. At first I thought it was a texture issue, and it very well still may be, but it
might be something.
> Could you show us a picture?
4d.10- Characters Connected to Timelines and Gaster
There are several characters that have mysterious connections to timelines and the abilities of
Gaster.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
1. Sans- It is common knowledge that Sans knows that the player travels between timelines,
and is somehow connected to Gaster. He seems to be like a "timeline moderator," watching
over what happens in various situations.
2. Gaster- Gaster was scattered across time and space, therefore connecting him with various
timelines. He may have the ability to take forms like (possibly) the Gaster Followers.
3. Flowey- Before the player, Flowey had the most determination, allowing him to SAVE and
LOAD his game. He also has knowledge of timelines since he was the one controlling them
before the player.
4. Annoying Dog- This might seem strange, but I think it is possible that part of Gaster is
Annoying Dog. Annoying Dog represents Toby Fox, and there is only one Toby Fox, so why
multiple dogs? Is it possible that since Toby created the game the Annoying Dog is some kind of
godlike entity? I also find it strange that the dog normally barks, however it also possesses the
ability to talk, as seen in the end of Hard Mode.
5. Temmie- Another strange comparison, but there is a reason. First of all, as stated before,
there is one Temmie Chang, but multiple Temmies, and maybe Temmie is also part of Gaster.
Secondly, Temmie seems to be able to mysteriously track your deaths, as the price of Tem
Armour goes down each time you die. Perhaps Temmie is another godlike creature, as Temmie
Chang was an artist for the game.
> As far as I can tell - I’ve also noted this because it bugs the hell out of me - when you reach
that tile and all tiles in that general column (be it above or below the middle wall island), it
triggers the Shyren encounter. Might be of note.
>Also I have confirmed that the Shyren’s encounter only occurs when Frisk is above or below it,
at the same Y-Coordinate. While I am writing this I’ve abused the glitch where if you alt-tab
while Frisk is walking the step count still ticks giving encounters, and so far has done nothing-
whereas in other rooms walking for this amount of time would have triggered an encounter.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
> So you can walk past it without getting the Shyren encounter? That’s kinda weird, will it trigger
if you walk back to those tiles?
>I did a genocide run by changing data values so the game would think I killed all the random
encounter monsters. Shyren still showed up, even though every other encounter was "but
nobody came"
>I can confirm this. During my first (and only) genocide run, I was extremely confused when I
encountered Shyren despite having been getting “But nobody came…” for the past several
rooms. I ran around trying to trigger more fights, just in case I had somehow missed something
or the area had somehow repopulated, but I only ever got the one Shyren encounter, and then
the genocide run proceeded as normal.
> After having done Genocide twice, I can say the same. The Wikia lists her as an obligatory
Genocide encounter.
> For some reason I found this “normal” since shyren doens’t look like a random monster to me,
she is more like a unique miniboss, but what really surprised me is that in the epilogue where
monsters tell you Chara/Asriel’s story, threr are 3 shyrens :l (even counting the amalgamate
lemon bread that has “shyrenbody/agent”, it should be just 2) -Noge
4d.10: Shyren and Gaster face look similar
Take a look at this images:
I noticed this when Toby said to check Shyren’s body (and I checked her face?), well: it may be
coincidence, but it looks so similar to me, also note that her spawn is close to the grey door and
there are many mysteries about her.
I don’t know what to say there, but it looked like something we may have to keep in mind. (I
don’t think shyren has determination like Undyne , I don’t think shyren’s face is Gaster’s face,
but maybe someone else comes with more solid ideas.)
Adding more shit about shyren, I’m too lazy to create a new entry:
the first diary in napstablook’s cousin/mtt house talks about shyren:
Dear diary: Shyren’s sister “fell down” recently.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
It’s sad. Without her sister to speak for her… ( (((some people said that gaster cant
talk))))
She’s become more reclusive than ever.
So I reached out to her, and told her…
That she, Blooky and I should perform together sometime.
She seemed to like that idea.
-Noge
> a good point. like many dt-related monsters, one of her eyes is covered; it may very well be
emphasized/different from her right eye the way sans’ left eye blinks, undyne the undying’s left
eye has the spear light? things come out from it, mettaton neo’s eye, etc. she is also an
obligatory encounter as stated earlier. the axis/column of tiles on the ground you must pass to
get through the room will trigger her encounter regardless of which one you step on. her lower
body (the ‘agent’ in the files) is a mystery, but it appears to be the (visible?) part of her that
makes up lemon bread’s body, and the amalgamates are dt-related. she is a must-kill in the
genocide route as well, counted a miniboss on the wikia. definitely a more enigmatic monster.
>Does anyone else notice that Napstablook states that Shyren’s sister “fell down”, and that
Gaster is stated to have also fallen into his own creation?
>Also, in the True Lab the ENTRY NUMBER 6 says this: ‘ASGORE asked everyone outside
the city for monsters that had “fallen down”’ Followed by the text about what would happen
if to those monsters that were comatose, she (Alphys) injected ‘Determination” into them. Is
‘lemon bread’ Shyren’s sister? If true, and since the Amalgamates returned to their families,
where is she? Does “fall down” have other meanings in the game?
>It is implied, and I have read in several websites, I believe, that “fallen down” is another word
for died, like “passed away” or “moved on” is for us.
4e: Et cetera
4e.01: Fallen humans
Why does nobody talk about anything the previous humans did, or what happened between
them leaving Toriel and dying to Asgore-- besides the hints from the flag game? This seems like
an unusual oversight.
>Hopefully this works? While beating the normal ending again, I noticed something. Basically,
all the previous souls “attacks” during the final boss are the various weapons you find during the
game, basically the weapons and armor you find around the game are items that belonged to
the other humans who died, you can assume that where you find the armor/weapon is where
they actually died.
>this reminds me of the bit where someone mentions asgore to no longer age after asriel died.
> @Above point: That would be Gerson the turtle shopkeeper and former fighter. He says Boss
Monsters age as their children do, because their soul goes into their children or it’s a gradual
power transfer, something like that.
And the fallen children’s specific details can be found here.

4e.02: AGENT in Wingdings
This may be completely off the rails here, but AGENT into winginds yields “6 left death winter” or
rather, v fingers, 1 finger, left finger, skull and crossbones, snowflake
Kill six enemies in the woods before Snowdin then go to the left?
>Yep, it’s off the rails. Killing 6 enemies at the first save point and then travelling back left did
nothing out of the ordinary. The only observation I can make is that the first enemy was
Snowdrake and the sixth was Chilldrake, with everything else in between being Icecaps,
although that may just be my experience.
> Worth a shot xD
>Could also mean “Die six times”?
>Skull and crossbones might reference the pirate flag in Papyrus’ room? Also A is two fingers?
Maybe referencing victory or peace sign/pacifist route. The one finger might be pointing up
rather than meaning one. EDIT: There is another flag on top of skelebros house in Snowdin.
> Just so everyone can see, “AGENT” is ✌☝☜☠❄ and “agent” is ♋♑♏■
4e.03: Fun flags
Guess I'll put this here.
I'm currently investigating a theory of mine...
It started when I read that you gain a legit Fun flag from Flowey when you go through genocide,
kill sans, reset, go through pacifist, and then spare him. This flag was 66.
>Since proven unreproducible
Fighting photoshop Flowey puts some things in your ini file, in order to trigger the fight and
facilitate loading right into it. I'm willing to bet that if a Gaster Fight exists in the game, then it's
likely supposed to be done with the right data in your save folder. I imagine it's pretty easy to
make a fight in the game that /cannot/ load unless you 'fix it'
By carefully monitoring my save file for abnormalities while I was going through the game
recently, I ended up finding a game state that you cannot modify the files to create. My exact
progression was this:
Genocide run-> reset after sans -> pacifist run ->spare flowey. First thing I did was gain
clamshell’s talked-to flag. Immediately, I tested to see if mkidgoner would react to this flag. They
did not, but I was able to find the flags that mkidgoner puts into your save
393- gets changes to 0.08. I’m reminded of encounter rates
394- gets changed to -1 No clue
395- gets changed to -1 also no clue.
Reloading the game at all will clear the memories of the gray monster kid, as will dying with
them. It appears that the memories of the kid cannot change timelines
I have no clue whether or not it’s possible to get these variables into the room with the mystery
man. Now, the mystery gets weirder. By going into the sound test room, I have found a couple
more variables that get modified and can be saved. However, these are a little more enigmatic
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
490 got changed from 3 to 1, then settled at 2 by the time I was back to the area with the kid
and ready to test.
491 was modified from 14 to 13, and has fluctuated in a range of 12-16
492 was merely incremented to 1
Further testing showed no change to these variables, and likely handle something between
areas at least.
>mkidgoner flags disappear every time you load the game. The only way to keep the flags on is
to go meet mkidgoner then keep your game open.If you end up fast-traveling, flag 492 gets
cleared,
>>Postgame, I can’t seem to meet mkidgoner. Coincidence?
>This could all be glitches and bugs, but I don’t think so. The text from the sound test room is
‘see you soon!’. Since entering the room, I’ve not been able to keep those variables in my save,
only by my Determination to NOT close the game. This fits with us having Gaster’s attention, or
whatever force is erasing him.
4e.04: Year (201X)
I’ll leave the document alone for a while after this, but I also wanted to point out that Undertale
takes place in 201X, but that Chara fell in 201X, but it has supposedly been possibly hundreds
of years since then. Also that few characters in the game allude to having seen humans, and
most of them are not able to recognize a human on sight. Unless I’m missing something obvious
that makes the timelines in-game make sense-- which I could be-- then this could very well be
evidence that the entirety of the timeline in-game is broken. Which would be related to Gaster
shattering across time and space, possibly.
>The game doesn’t take place in 201X. That’s just the intro which is actually showing you what
happened to Chara, not Frisk. We don’t know what year the game actually takes place in.
Sans also never says that he hasn’t seen a human before, just that Papyrus hasn’t-- did he try
to save the previous six humans somehow? Could those be the people Frisk doesn’t know in
the picture?
>It’s worth noting that Sans states that Frisk would be “dead where they stand” implying he’d
have killed them. It could be possible Sans killed the other six humans, as it isn’t directly stated
that Asgore killed them.
>Sans, as well as Undyne? Undyne mentions encountering humans before. She even
complains about how you won’t die.
> The items the humans drop are all scattered over different regions in the Underground (e.g.,
ballet kid’s stuff in Waterfall, gunkid’s things are sold by Catty/Bratty so they might’ve died
around the Garbage Dump), but there’s little to go off of otherwise.
Undyne also mentions how no human has gotten past Asgore, and it’s generally implied
that Asgore has killed the fallen humans (some, if not all).
>I think Undyne is referencing anime and comics as the place where she has seen humans
before
> possibly; a lot surrounding the humans is vague as hell. though i wouldn’t be surprised if she
has encountered a fallen human or two before, perhaps when she was very young, it does
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
make more sense if she hasn’t (unless she really was very young, maybe too young to
remember?). she has a skewed perception of humanity from the anime/manga/cartoons that
alphys has shown her. i think if she did meet up with balletkid/bookkid/gunkid/cookkid
(blue/purple/yellow/green), one of them took her eye out.
> Note: toby’s twitter says that all of the humans got to asgore, but never got past him. This
heavily implies that Asgore killed the other humans. Also, Isn’t her eye still there, but just
magic? Th-M
> undyne also mentions nobody has ever gotten past asgore. not sure if her eye is still there,
considering she wears an eyepatch and her undying form just has a black socket(?) with the
little spear-shaped light shafts(?) coming out of it.
>To note: Undyne states that she knew that humans were determined, but not to the extent
which the player is, implying that she has never encountered a human before.
>Frisk is supposed to be the soul for determination however, so Undyne could have just been
surprised at Frisk’s ability.
4e.05: Phone [[ACT]] Menu
I’ve picked up on the beginnings of some kind of theory, but it’s just a start. Alphys tells you to
go to your phone’s ACT menu when you activate the yellow heart. Does that mean all the
buttons at the bottom are buttons on your phone? If so, what does that mean for the rest of the
game? And, if, as theorized above, the game takes place perhaps far in the future, could
phones have more advanced technology that can cause this kind of influence on the world?
>Don’t forget the amazing Jetpack feature!
> Wouldn’t really line up with pre-phone get in the Ruins, but it might be of more significance
after Toriel gives you the phone, and after Alphys upgrades it?
>After giving this a little thought, you do have an encounter before getting the phone, in which
Toriel scares the poor Froggit away, and all 4 of the options are there. The only functions that
the CELL has ever had are calls, texting/social media for monsters, the yellow SOUL mode and
the amazing jetpack! Which means that the FIGHT, ACT, ITEM and MERCY buttons are not on
your phone, encounter in the ruins proves that, and judging by Alphys’ reaction to the CELL
Toriel gives you, which doesn’t even have texting, means that technology has not developed as
far as you think. The only real futuristic technology in the game I am pretty sure were only built
by Royal Scientists, as Gaster and Alphys’ creations are far more advanced than most other
things in the game.
> Yeah, I assume those buttons are phone-specific. When she tells you to hit the yellow button
on your phone’s [[ACT]] menu, the option it gives you in the actual ACT menu is ‘Yellow’, in
yellow text. So I guess that means, in the ACT menu, it signifies Frisk hitting the yellow button
on the phone.
>I think it should be important to note that while in yellow heart mode, your soul rotates 180
degrees, so that it is like a monster soul. Perhaps this is a reference to gunkid, who might have
killed a lot of people, making him a "monster?" This could be supported by in the genocide
route- Sans does not recognize you as a human, and Asgore is not sure what type of monster
you are.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>No one actually knows if gunkid killed many people in his path. Even when Frisk kills a few,
Asgore considers him a human and not a monster. If gunkid or any others and done Genocide,
or something close to Genocide, there wouldn’t be many monsters in the underground.
>Asgore calls you a monster because of the terrible deeds you’ve been doing, like when Glados
calls you a monster early in Portal 2.
> I’m pretty sure going to ACT>Yellow is just a menu option for “Frisk presses the yellow button
on their phone”, and isn’t the actual button that Alphys mentions.
4e.06: (Sad) Papyrus phone call
Not sure if it means much but calling Papyrus in the corridor where you first see the CORE
causes him to say:
“The Core...
You're getting close, Huh...? …”
Subsequent calls result in just
“...”
And a worried/sad expression which I've never seen used anywhere else
After befriending Undyne and calling Papyrus and Undyne in the same spot, Undyne adds this
to Papyrus’ lines:
“What?! No, we just became friends!! You can’t already be that close…”
However Subsequent calls keep Papyrus silent, with Undyne saying:
“What?”
> Is the worried/sad expression the same as the one you can get in the Papyrus-only-survivor
end (and possibly others, I don’t recall specifics)? Here, you can see it at 8:38 and be sad.
>I’m sad. But to answer your question the face is exactly the same. Here, you can see the face
at 18:38
>Perhaps Undyne and Papyrus, like Alphys when you reach the end of the Core, know what
happens when you get to Asgore- they know that you must kill him (or think so, anyways) just
like Alphys says.
>They probably think Frisk wi ll eit he
r kill Asgore or be killed by Asgo
re.
>What if Papyrus became sad because the CORE reminded him of Gaster?
>> Possible, but I think it’s more likely that he’s worried that Frisk will get killed.
4e.07: Toby’s ‘FUN’ tweet
I think this may be important though.
Toby tweeted this recently
As In Fun value?
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
If you think about it, anywhere and anytime at all could apply to Gaster
Also, the u is for you and me could mean that Its talking about Gaster and Chara/Frisk, or
whoever is there. Also with the Asterisk (W.D. Gaster (Wing Din Gaster) and Frisk combined
that could mean something).
So overall, this could translate to “
F:Gaster and Frisk, as you see an asterisk almost everywhere when someone is talking
U: Gaster and Frisk again, maybe Gaster is connected to Frisk somehow through some greater
method than speculation
N: Gaster is everywhere.
>There’s a point to be made about what Toby capitalized in his tweet: FYA instead of FUN. I
know it’s a blatant rip from Spongebob, but it could be a key to something.
>>The obvious answer to N is that Gaster is spread throughout all times and places but it
seems too easy compared to EVERYTHING ELSE that’s been ungodly difficult to find. Maybe
it’s a red herring and there’s a deeper meaning. F could be Sans and frisk since they both hang
out a lot, but I’m grasping for straws here.
> It should definitely be mentioned that the FUN thing is a reference to that one Spongebob
episode (he sings this to Plankton, who eventually gives his own morbid rendition). This tweet
seems more like it’s just a silly reference to that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Toby’s alluding to
something more as well.
>This reminded me of something. Just like that Spongebob Episode, we have a character who
supposedly enjoys the “fun” world with friends (Frisk, as their true identity only appears in the
Pacifist Ending), and a character who has a sick, twisted, violent view of the same world (Chara)
> I swear to god if FUN is an elaborate SBSP reference. But yeah, Spongebob is advocating A
Good Time For All™, and Plankton, the opposite - “F is for fire that burns down the whole town,
U is for uranium - bombs! N is for no survivoooorrs-” (then he’s interrupted by Spongebob who
goes “Plankton! That’s not what fun is about!” or something.)
>Why is “Fun” in quotes when the acronym is FUN? Besides that, has anyone tried changing
the Fun value from Fun to Fya or nuF?
>In that tweet above, he hasn’t capitalised the word ‘Fun’ but he has capitalised the meaning of
each letter which makes for an acronym of ‘FYA’ instead (Friends, You, Anywhere). It’s not a
clear acronym though; has a lot of possible meanings ranging from ‘For Your Amusement’ to
‘For Your Attention’, unless there’s a different significance to FYA somewhere; although that all
being said, Toby’s been quite loose with his acronyms before, like the LOVE one which doesn’t
fit an E at all. There’s a section below about translating acronyms into Wingdings, might be
worth seeing if FYA translates into anything interesting just to be sure.
> @above point: violence does have two e’s after the ‘v’, so ‘LOVE’, in all technicalities, does fit.
but seeing as there are several unsolved potential acronyms, it might drive us up a wall to keep
those technicalities in mind. can’t hurt to try, though.
>> Maybe The fun value can be changed to Fum, Referencing Spongebob, currently i am
testing out that theory i set it as Fum 66. maybe that’ll change a few things, i am currently
documenting my run through with this set value to see if there any changes - Omar

>What if it’s a number for something? Friends who do stuff together- how many friends does
frisk hang out with? I think it’s five, Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Alphys, and Napstablook. You and
me, that’s 2. Anywhere and anytime, perhaps the last digit can be any number. 52_
>I think Toby is not talking about Gaster, just simply about the FUN values in an ironically clever
way. F is for the friends you meet along the way, U is for perhaps Frisk and the Player, and N is
for the location you happen to be. Your location in the game, the different characters who are
your friends and who you have killed, all that has to do with the FUN values.
>Oh my spiderdonuts…. Listen to flowey’s theme and spongebob’s fun song one after another.
They sound so freaking similar! I saw a post above this about a supposed way to get a legit Fun
flag… Someone please look more into this
>U could refer to Frisk and Chara. Has anyone else noticed when you die you get Asgore’s
dialogue from the True Lab VHS? Or that when you fall into the garbage dump you’re hearing
Chara’s memory of Asriel finding them post fall? (I should note it is irrelevant to prior
playthroughs)
> The theory of Chara being the narrator/flavour text/etc. is very compelling, also.
>I second the similarity of “Your Best Friend” and Spongebob’s fun song, when the second
instrument of YBF comes in, it matches spongebob’s song eerily
> I think FUN could correlate to 3 distinct events in the game. F - Friends doing stuff together
ie. Completing Pacifist Run. U - You and Me - “It’s you” “it’s me” Genocide run, and N a neutral
run, a run that could happen anywhere or anytime at all because it doesn’t take any special
requirements to go through it.
>writing FUN in wingdings results -hand pointing right- -christian cross- -skull with crossed
bones-. Attempt at deciphering that: A hand pointing towards something could simply mean “do
this” so “do this with your friends…” (pacifist run?) A christian cross could reference resurrection
(paired with “you and me” from a wing dinged acronym could point towards Frisk and Gaster)
could be “load Frisk and Gaster”. Finally crossed bones standing for “anywhere and anytime at
all”. maybe “True ending” or to end Gasters current state of being spread across time and
space. My interpretation might be useless, but the idea of converting FUN to wingdings is worth
considering.
> What if the tweet was telling us that Fun was an acronym, but the acronym he gave us was an
example… it could mean (F)risk (U)ndertale (N)o Mercy meaning that the True ending
could be the Genocide ending… either that or I’m rambling about nothing…
> what if he is hinting at number values for fun through the quotes? (like changing those quotes
to numbers based upon position in alphabet, so the first line, “F is for friends who do stuff
together.” Would be 6 919 61518 6189514419 23815 415 19202166 201575208518. This
seems a bit far stretched though. But yeah those quotes might relate to fun values. Sorry for the
bad english.
>In my opinion, I think this was just Toby poking some fun at the community taking things too
far, whether they’re right or not. (I do hope that’s not the case though and we’re actually onto
something.)

4e.08: ENTRY SEVENTEEN, chronologically
On the topic of the True Lab, doesn’t entry seventeen seem a bit out of place, chronologically?
Was Alphys studying souls along with Gaster, or was something else going on there? We know
that Alphys replaced Gaster, but the question is if she was working with him beforehand. She
admits that she injected DETERMINATION into dying monsters for experimentation, after all, so
we know that the notes have to do with her research.
> There’s always the possibility that ENTRY SEVENTEEN is separate from Alphys’ own entries
in the Lab. After all - different author, seems to be different context altogether? In Alphys’
entries, she’s writing to herself like you might in a journal, is how I read it. Gaster is working with
two others, presumably. Though they may be working/have worked together.
Addendum: I’ll leave what I typed before ffr, but I want to add to say I do think Alphys
and Gaster (and Sans) worked together. However, I think there’s an ENTRY SEVENTEEN and
an Entry 17 (Alphys’) because they’re from different experiments/research sessions.
>> it’s possible that they’re separate, but it bears repeating that there is no entry seventeen
except for this one. It’s also been noticed that some of the entries could have been written by
Sans, being all lowercase.
4e.09: Asriel, Undyne the Undying, and MTT NEO
I’ve noticed that both Undyne the Undying and Asriel Dreemurr at the end of the true pacifist run
have markings similar to the delta rune, with hearts being prominent. Gerson said that the
monsters forgot it’s original meaning. Perhaps it means determination?
> I like this one. MTT NEO also has ties to DT. Here’s a pic:
He seems to hold similarities to Asriel and Undyne the Undying with the hearts in the middle,
wings, and all those fun acute angles. There is also a link between DT and eyes (you can kind
of see this in Undyne the Undying and MTT NEO above).
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
>It might be worth noting that Toriel also has this on her clothes. She might also have a relation
to determination? She seems to have demonstrated some sort of healing magic right at the
beginning of the game. Instead of using determination for power, perhaps she uses it to help?
Asriel in his first form also has the same symbol on his robes.
> That symbol is the Delta Rune. It appears in various places, most notably those connected to
the royal goatfam.
4e.10: Acronyms in Wingdings
Love is an acronym, Exp is an acronym, Fun is an acronym- what else is an acronym? We
assume Lv is Level, not Love/Level Of Violence, and we also assume Exp is Experience, not
Execution Points, so what else are we taking for granted? Perhaps to solve Undertale’s
mysteries we are just thinking in the wrong way.
Words that may be acronyms: Love was in caps so perhaps the other words that are in caps are
also acronyms?
Words such as (feel free to add to the list, anything capitalized or in colour, or both)
SAVE, LOAD, SOUL, HOME, MAGIC, ASGORE, RUINS, TORIEL, UNDERGROUND, FIGHT,
DETERMINATION, ACT, CORE, FLOWEY, DTEM (Determination/DT-Extraction Machine)
As suggested, here are the above possible acronyms in the Wingdings font. Apologies for it not
being in text format, Google Docs does not like the Wingdings font.
FUN ☞ ☠
LOVE ☹⚐✞☜
EXP ☜✠
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
(Question) Love is an acronym for “Level of Violence” but unless the E in LOVE is used in an E
in violence, what does it mean? Also Exp is not using the X in its acronym of Execution points
unless the X represents the X in Execution. These unused letters in places seem.. odd.
(Possible Expansion on Question) “Level of Violence” uses “L” from “Level”, “O” from “of” and
“V” & “E” from the beginning and end of “Violence”. EXP uses “EX” from “Execution” and “P”
from “Points”. It is possible the other acronyms use more than 1 letter from words. Considering
both acronyms have a word that 2 letters are used, other acronyms may very likely use less
words than the letters represent.
(Question) Does the KR in the sans fight actually stand for Karmic Retribution or is it another
acronym? As sans is associated with gaster it would be interesting if a dual meaning could be
abstracted.
(Possible Answer) http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Knowledge+Representation
Knowledge Representation perhaps? The better part of the entire world of Undertale is based
on if-then happenstances. If Asgore is spared but Alphys is not dated, then Flowey kills him.
There are many more. Perhaps this is how Gaster slightly changes the path of the world.
> It’s likely KR stands for something involving ‘karma’, even if it’s not ‘karmic retribution’. Some
of the flavour text (which you can view on his Wikia fight page, scroll to the bottom) involves
‘KARMA’, in caps.
>I remember there being some unused strings referencing to it as either "Karma" or "Karmic
Retribution", so I don't think they're fooling with us again.
> Some of these acronyms (e.g., EXP, LV, ATK, DEF, not sure if there are more) are mentioned
by Chara at the end of Genocide (they say something like ‘every time a number goes up, I grow
stronger’), so they might have a connection there, too.
Addendum: I believe ‘QUIT’ might be one of the notable words, used in Sans’ Geno fight when
he talks about you consuming timelines and “you gotta learn when to QUIT.” (8:53) Whether or
not it’s significant, who knows.
Reply to Addendum: It might be, however I have not ever seen QUIT been capitalized
anywhere else, where I presume the noted words have consistently been in caps throughout
their multiple appearances throughout the game. Words such as SOUL- I don’t think it is said
anywhere without being capitalized. I am going to go through the list and confirm the multiple
appearances of the notable words.
> When you hold escape, quitting is capitalized. Try escape during the fight.
> I don’t think QUIT is ever used the way Sans may be implying in his fight. Of course, there is
the literal sense of quitting your horrid path of destruction, but it’s in caps, and Sans doesn’t say
things in caps very often. He may be alluding to the player quitting the game and, again, quitting
your horrid path of destruction. I don’t think any other character would be able to make any sort
of meta comment like that, except for Flowey. Maybe he uses the word, but I can’t personally
recall. It might be more significant within his fight, though.
>You might be right, but I feel like it would need to be consistent throughout his dialogue, and
it’s not. He only capitalizes it the first time, each other time is lowercase.
> Iirc, there are some words from above that are not always in uppercase, but I can’t remember
off the top of my head. Will update if I get to that in game again.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
Also, if I end up doing another genocide run, I’ll try quitting in that part of the fight.
>I think that we should regard Fun in the same way as LOVE. Both have seemingly innocuous
connotations, but mean something far more sinister. However, as stated above, we may have
to think that Fun may only be a two-word acronym instead of a three word one, like LOVE and
EXP.
>ATK Could be “Ability to kill” from sans’ speech.
>The N in fun could be number.
The Fu could be: FUNCTION, FURTIVE, FUSION
> DEF can stand for “DistancE of Feeling” ? Or something like that.
> HP can stand for “Hostility Point” and represent the will of fight of the person. Explain the 1 HP
for Sans (he doesn’t want to fight, always showing a way to escape for the player). The
0.000000001 HP when you take the Asriel last attack, why HP increase with LV, why most of
monster spare you if they have low HP and why Undyne the Undyne has so many HP.
>Someone said in yt that HP stands for Hope, and it makes a lot of sense to me and also for
what you mentioned: low hope for sans, undying hope for undyne, etc.
> Tidazi’s theory on FUN standing for ‘Fork UNification’/’Fork Unification Number’ is worth
checking out. (the rest of their work, including .ini research, is also worth checking out.)
>If you CHECK Aaron, it says that HP = Horsepower
> @above: dog salad says it’s hit poodles. suffice to say, toby likes making Jokes™.
> some further acronym investigation to read about here.
>Everyone is missing a really important capitalized word: Gaster’s invention “the CORE”, no
fucking idea about what it’s designed for or what could it mean. -Noge
>>Also UNDERTALE itself Toby always keeps capitalized in his tweets.
>”Crossoutline skullcrossbones thumbdown handptleft sunshine snowflake handv frownface
handptleft” these are the official wingdings names for the symbols UNDERTALE. One thing I
noticed is that the sun is sunshine, which is only seen in very few places in the game, pacifist
ending for instance. So the sun may not mean hotland. The skullcrossbones could be talking
about either the skeleton brothers, Gaster, or the flag in Papy’s room. besides that I dont know
what it all means. Also, during the papyrus fight, one of the text says something like “Papyrus
👎
remembers a pun sans said, and frowns.” Could that be what this frown in referring to?
> ☠ ☜☼❄✌☹☜, if anyone wants the symbols in image (unicode) form. various wingdings
symbols relate to the skelebros, which i’ve noticed when writing it:
● A-I: hands likely have more to do with gaster’s nickname from the riverperson (the man
who speaks in hands)
● J-L: emotes. not sure, but sans is always grinning for a possible nod to this.
● M: bomb. not sure, i can really only recall a bomb in the game during mtt’s news
segment.
● N: skull & crossbones, like papyrus’ flag, and, y’know, skeletons themselves.
● O-P: flag/pennant. maybe also related to paps’ flag.
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
● Q: airplane. not sure if tsundereplane ties into this, but...
● R-T: sun, raindrop, snowflake. could have to do with weather, could have to do with
three of the major areas: hotland, waterfall, snowdin/tundra.
● U-Z: religious symbols. not sure, unless there may be meaning in the ‘images’ of the
symbols themselves and not what they stand for (e.g., crescent moon and star relating to
sans’ affinity for astronomy)
● apostrophe: candle. not sure.
● period, comma, etc.: mailboxes. period is open with mail inside (like sans’ mailbox),
comma is closed (like paps’).
● question mark, exclamation mark: hand writing with pen/pencil, and a pencil. another
hand symbol, the pencil for exclamation mark likely relates to it.
>...Chara says “GOLD” right? Besides that, the currency in Undertale is always referred to as
just “G.” Perhaps this could mean something, or am I going off of nothing?
>One suggestion for an acronym for FUN is Fundamental Universe Number (This was on a
reddit post about various acronyms). -AR
4e.11: Suzy
I’ve yet to see anyone talking about ‘Suzy’ (someone the Waterfall clamshell NPC mentions).
I’m not sure if Suzy has to do with any Gaster spec, though it is a bit intriguing that the NPC
would mention a character you can’t seem to meet. Here’s the Wiki page, here’s the Reddit
post. Could be a throwaway detail, but how many of those are there? Not sure if doing runs with
the name Suzy would produce any interesting results, still might be worth a try.
>Ran it. Does nothing.
>Could be a BoF2 reference. I saw a screenshot from Bof2 on Toby’s twitter and Suzy in that
game is found ‘beyond the mountain in the ruins of what later becomes ‘home’ town’. I’m
searching for Suzy in my current playthrough, fully intend to search the entire ruins.
>As far as this was concerned, I was always thinking that the candy bowl in the ruins looked like
a little clamshell. Didn’t think to hard on it since I was just thinking the ruins would be
impossible to get back into after you would be able to talk to the npc.
>She’s not in the ruins post pacifist run, maybe I can find her if I reset without going to the
surface. As far as the candy bowl room, there are two streams of water there. Could be possible
she’s there. *EDIT: Tested, no Suzy. Interestingly though I still have everyone present on my
load screen even though I’ve reset?
> if it wasn’t a true reset, you’ll still have the characters you’ve befriended on the menu. i found
this out the hard way in my series of aborted genocide and true pacifist runs, where everyone
was still on the menu when i was near the end of a genocide route. the guilt is real.
> so... suzy/susie huh? guess time will tell if suzy mentioned in UT and susie from DR are
connected.- konrad
4e.12: Chara was not as bad as we think
Just a theory, but I don’t think Chara was as bad as we think the most of time. If you think of
what Chara did when they were alive they never tried to kill other monsters (it would be easy for
Back to Portmanteau of Contents
them: humans are much stronger than monsters, proven by how Genocide Frisk can beat
absolutely every monster despite being a kid). Most things saying that “Chara was the worst
person in the world” are suggested (Did Chara try to poison Asgore? Nothing actually says that).
In fact most of Chara’s actions are really hard to understand; first of all why, if they take the full
control of Asriel’s body, do they take their own body to their native village? If the goal was to kill
humans to increase their own power they don’t need to do that. Asriel says in the Ruins that
Chara “hates humanity” and the reason for their coming to the Underground was because they
were “not really happy” but it can be amounted to a child being hated by most of the people they
know and trying to kill themselves. Chara lived in 201X and discriminations that could apply to
them did exist (sadly). Chara was not the “greatest person” as Asriel says, but that sentence
can apply to a lot of characters. We can also imagine that Chara “hated humanity” but cared for
their monster family despite their “cold attitude”.
>Many theories suggest that Chara poisoning Asgore was an accident.
For the Chara we can meet at the end of a genocide run, don’t forget that it’s a soulless Chara
(if they’re really Chara). We all see what Asriel, the kind hearted prince, became when he lost
his soul (talking about Flowey), and even just after regaining his soul Asriel did take a while
before becoming “reasonable”. Chara was a human, and humans are described as worse than
monsters in this game. So a soulless human really can be the worst thing in the world.
Hoping there is maybe a way to give Chara their soul back. We can do it for Asriel, why not for
them?
>Pretty sure that chara the child was never evil, but was possessed by a demon and the
“Chara” possessing you in genocide was just chara’s demon and not child chara.
>I noticed that at the end of the genocide run when Chara performs the jump scare, Chara
attacks which kills you (the player) then closes the game. Do you think it’s possible to defend
yourself against Chara’s attack? We know that Chara has complete control of Frisk, but we still
have a dialog option to choose, to erase the world, or not. Chara does have full control so
maybe Chara gave you the ability to choose through Frisk. My point about Chara’s attack; is
there a way in preventing the game from closing after the fatal blow?
>>Technically we don’t actually have a choice. If we choose not to erase, Chara will ask us if we
thought we had a choice, then erase anyways. Also, when Chara attacks, they are likely
attacking the game, and erasing your progress. For confirmation, you can check the Undertale
wiki. If the game is in windowed mode when Chara attacks you, the whole window shakes,
supporting this argument.
> Glad to see some Chara appreciation and understanding here. There’s a lot to say about
Chara.

Possibly meaningless but maybe worth mentioning: On my second playthrough, a pacifist run, I
received the “wrong number” call early in the game (I believe I was at the River Person’s empty
station in Snowdin?). When I was on the way to meet Asgore (after getting his call in the Lab),
Sans never appeared in the golden room. Is this normal?
>On your True Pacifist playthrough of Undertale, Sans will not be in the golden room no matter
what. The number song has nothing to do with this specific event.
>This is the right spot for the wrong number call to have taken place. However it is odd that
Sans was not there… Like the person above me said, he should be there no matter what. Also
what do you mean by Asgore’s call? Asgore never calls you throughout the game, to my
knowledge.
>I think they’re referring to Asriel’s call.

X.XX: Castle in the sky?
during the journey after the waterfall headed toward the bridge to see undyne, there is a lovely
scene where the monster kid and Chara/Frisk walk past a floating castle. This seems a little
sketchy since EVERYTHING in Undertale is relevant. Does anyone know of this and why it’s
there, well... other than it’s there to be pretty?
> the wiki refers to it as asgore’s castle. if you call papyrus, he says, “THAT'S THE KING'S
