IT Network Essentials

This document defines key concepts related to computer networks. It discusses the different types of software, hardware, and networking devices that make up a computer network. These include operating systems, applications, input/output devices, storage, routers, switches, and more. It also defines different types of computer networks at various scales, from a personal area network (PAN) to a wide area network (WAN) to a campus area network (CAN). Finally, it distinguishes between asynchronous and synchronous communication and defines signals, data, and information in the context of computer networks.

Network – resources that can shared information

 Software, URL, video file, images, hardware

1. Software – program in a computer

 OS (Operating System) – allows the hardware to operate
o Ex. Windows, Linux, IOS

 Application – programs that runs on your computer

o Ex. Microsoft Office, Adobo Photoshop

 Utility – configure, maintain, keep the hardware

o Ex. Antivirus software, disk repair, disk cleaner

2. Hardware – tangible components of computer system

 Input – to put data into computer system
o Ex. Keyboard, mouse
 Processor – accepts data from you (CPU)
o Ex. CPU, GPU, motherboard, network card, video card, sound
card

 Output – display
o Ex. Monitor, printers, projector, LCD, speaker, headphone

 Storage – the computer hardware used to remember/store data.

o Ex. Hard drive, dvd, cd, flash drive, magnetic tape, diskette

Networking Devices – creates a link

o Ex. Router, switch, repeater, modem, bridge, gateway, access point
LAN (Local Area Network) – wired or wireless, consists of a computer
network in a single site, typically an individual office building
PAN (Personal Area Network) – for personal use, connect thru pc, printer
WAN (Wide Area Network) – a computer network that extens across a large
geographical area, such as across states or countries.
MAN (Mertropolitan Area Network) – range between LAN 48km; computer
network across an entire city
CAN (Campus Area Network) – networking with the same campus; larger
than LAN but smaller than MAN

Communication
 Asynchronous – no real-time
 Synchronous – real-time
Signal – wireless (data transmission)
Data – raw materials / unorganized
Information – process data
