PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION

Preservation – all the managerial and financial considerations including storage and
accommodation provisions, staffing levels, policies, techniques and methods
involved in preserving library and archive materials and the information contained
in them (IFLA)

Conservation – a term which denotes those specific policies and practices involved in
protecting library and archive materials from deterioration, damage and decay
(IFLA)

SEVERAL ASPECTS OF PROTECTING THE COLLECTION

1.Proper Handling – storage and handling are the two basic steps in protecting the collection.
Adjustable type of storage units provides the library a measure of flexibility.
*Shifting the material to provide proper space
*Books should be vertical or horizontal on the shelf
*Proper supports and bookends help keep the material in good order
*Teaching people how to handle materials properly

2.Environmental Control – climate control in a library is essential to conservation

*A cool temperature is better than high temperature. High temperature is damaging to
books. For every rise of 10 C, book paper deteriorates twice fast.
*Changes in humidity can physically weaken materials, which in turn can create added
costs for repair and replacement.
*The combination of heat and humidity accelerate paper acidity.
*At 65% or higher, the chances of mildew and mold formation increased.
*Ultraviolet light is the most damaging form of light, because it quickly causes materials
to fade, turn yellow and brittle.
*Insects contribute to the destruction of books and other materials:
-Silverfish enjoy feasting on wood pulp paper fiber
-Cockroaches eat anything but have a taste for book glue
-Termites prefer wood and wood pulp paper
-Book lice enjoy starch and gelatin sizing

3.Security – a library security program should be implemented by libraries to secure the library
collections and equipment from theft and misuse.
-Baggage counter / control desk
-Monitoring system (CCTV)
-Security guard at library entrances / exits
-Electronic security systems (3M, Horizon Sunrise, etc.)

4.Disaster Preparedness – planning is an important aspect for the protection of people,

collections and equipment. Both natural and man-made disasters must be considered.
-Natural calamities (earthquakes, typhoon, heavy rains, floods)
-Man-made disasters (broken water pipes or sprinkle heads, faulty air-
conditioning, electrical wiring and fire)

FACTORS WHICH CAUSE DETERIORATION

What attacks paper? Problems Solutions

Acids (covers, folders, boxes) acid hydrolysis deacidification

acid migration deacidification

acidic air pollution air filters

microorganism / insects biodeterioration fumigation

ultraviolet light photodegration diffusers / blinds

Man mishandling / vandalism monitoring

WHAT MAKES PAPER MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THESE ATTACKS?

SOLUTIONS
*Relative humidity (40-55% RH) dehumidifiers
*Temperature (20-25° C) air-cons; airfan
*Negligence good housekeeping
*Lack of disaster preparedness programs good management
*Absence of appropriate facilities provide for good facilities
