Preservation – all the managerial and financial considerations including storage and
accommodation provisions, staffing levels, policies, techniques and methods
involved in preserving library and archive materials and the information contained
in them (IFLA)
Conservation – a term which denotes those specific policies and practices involved in
protecting library and archive materials from deterioration, damage and decay
(IFLA)
1.Proper Handling – storage and handling are the two basic steps in protecting the collection.
Adjustable type of storage units provides the library a measure of flexibility.
*Shifting the material to provide proper space
*Books should be vertical or horizontal on the shelf
*Proper supports and bookends help keep the material in good order
*Teaching people how to handle materials properly
3.Security – a library security program should be implemented by libraries to secure the library
collections and equipment from theft and misuse.
