1. General
The Free Fall Extension System extends the Main Landing Gear (MLG) and the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) if
the Normal Extension and Retraction System (Ref. 32-31-00) is not available.
When the related electrical switches are set in the cockpit, electrical rotary-type actuators release the MLG
and the NLG door and gear uplocks. A mechanically operated valve isolates the hydraulic supply. Other
mechanically operated valves let fluid move in the hydraulic components of the Normal Extension and
Retraction System. This prevents cavitation and hydraulic locks. When the uplocks release, gravity extends
these landing gears. Springs pull the downlock links of each landing gear (L/G) into the locked position and the
landing gear doors stay open.
When the Free Fall Extension System operates the NWS system (Ref. AMM D/O 32-51-00-00) is isolated.
When the cockpit switches are put in the RESET position they set the system back to the Normal Extension and
Retraction mode.

The electrical system operates the free-fall actuators 5GF(6GF) and 7GF in the MLG and NLG bays. The
free-fall actuators release the MLG and NLG door and gear uplocks through the mechanical system. The
mechanical system also operates, in a set sequence, the hydraulic system components. The hydraulic system
includes a cut-out valve 5285GA in the right MLG bay and a vent valve 5230GA(5231GA) and 5206GA in each
MLG bay and the NLG bay.
A. Electrical System
(Ref. Fig. Free Fall Extension - Electrical Schematic SHEET 1)
The aircraft batteries supply 28V DC through two hot bus bars (701PP and 702PP). There are two
independent circuits between the bus bars and the free-fall actuators 5GF(6GF) and 7GF. Usually the
circuits are energized at the same time, but each circuit will operate the free-fall actuators (at half speed) if
the other circuit is not available. Each circuit has a lock-toggle type switch (8GF1 and 8GF2) and operates
a motor in the actuator. A link connects the two switches together. It is possible to move the link away from
the switches (during maintenance) and operate the switches independently.
B. Mechanical System
(1) Main landing gear
(Ref. Fig. Mechanical System - R MLG SHEET 1)
In the right MLG bay a linkage connects the free-fall actuator 6GF to the cut-out valve 5285GA. The
linkage also connects, through the cut-out valve, the vent valve 5231GA, the MLG uplock 5221GA and
the MLG door uplock 5225GA. When the output shaft of the free-fall actuator turns, it moves the linkage
which operates the valves and uplocks.
The left MLG configuration is almost the same as the right MLG, but does not include a cut-out valve.
In the NLG bay, a linkage connects the free-fall actuator 7GF to the vent valve 5206GA and the NLG
uplock 5200GA. A system of cables and pulleys also connects the free-fall actuator to another linkage,
which is attached to the NLG door uplock 5202GA. When the output shaft of the free-fall actuator turns,
it moves the linkages which operates the valves and the gear and door uplocks.
(3) Refer to 32-31-00 for the Description and Operation of these components:
· the MLG uplock 5220GA(5221GA)
· the MLG door uplock 5224GA(5225GA)
· the NLG uplock 5200GA
· the NLG door uplock 5202GA.
C. Hydraulic Components
(Ref. Fig. Free Fall Extension - Hydraulic Schematic)
The hydraulic components special to the Free Fall Extension System are:
· a cut-out valve 5285GA
· three vent valves 5230GA(5231GA) and 5206GA
· four check valves 5207GA, 5232GA(5233GA) and 5500GA
· a restrictor 5501GA.
(1) The cut-out valve 5285GA isolates the L/G hydraulic system from the Green hydraulic system
supply. The valve mechanism includes a shear pin. If the valve spool is unserviceable and
can not move, the shear pin breaks. This lets the linkage in the mechanical system continue
to move to operate the uplocks and vent valves.
(2) The vent valves 5230GA(5231GA) and 5206GA:
· let the hydraulic fluid move between ports B and A on some components to prevent cavitation
· let any unwanted fluid go back through the manifold assembly 5503GA.
Each vent valve also has a shear pin in the valve mechanism for the same function as described for the
cut-out valve.
Port B of each of these components in the MLG and NLG bays (Ref. AMM D/O 32-31-00-00) connects
to a vent valve:
· the L/G downlock
· the L/G actuator
· the L/G door actuator.
Port A of each of these components (Ref. AMM D/O 32-31-00-00) also connects to a vent valve to
prevent cavitation:
· the MLG door actuators
· the L/G uplocks
· the L/G downlocks
· the L/G actuators.
A return line, special to the Free Fall Extension System, connects each vent valve to the Green
hydraulic system return through the manifold assembly 5503GA.
(3) The check valves 5207GA, 5232GA(5233GA) and 5500GA let fluid flow in one direction only.
The check valves 5207GA and 5232GA(5233GA) close when the L/G actuators extend. This prevents
movement of the doors in the closed direction.
The check valve 5500GA lets fluid flow from port B to A of the MLG door actuator to prevent cavitation.
(4) The restrictor 5501GA (installed on the manifold assembly 5503GA) decreases the flow of
return fluid from the MLG components to prevent cavitation in the gear and door actuators.

The free-fall actuator is a rotary-type with two permanent-magnetic-field motors. Each brush-type motor
is the same and operates from a 28V DC supply. The two motors turn the same output shaft. Each motor
can turn the output shaft if the other motor is stopped, although it takes more time to get to the full travel
position. The motors turn the output shaft through these components:
· a reduction gear set for each motor
· a worm and gear set for each motor
· a differential gearbox
· a single-stage epicyclic reduction-gear.
Each motor shaft turns a reduction gear which transmits the torque and also reduces the speed. Each
reduction gear turns a worm shaft. Disc springs between two bearings on one end of each worm shaft let
the shaft move linearly in each direction. Two torque limit switches are located at the other end of each
worm shaft. One switch operates when the shaft moves linearly in one direction and the other operates
when the shaft moves in the opposite direction.
As the worm shaft turns, it moves linearly in proportion to the torque. If the torque gets near the maximum,
the related switch operates and disconnects the electrical supply to the motor. A thermal switch operates
to disconnect the electrical supply if the motor becomes too hot. Each worm shaft turns, through a gear, a
differential pinion in the differential gearbox.
The differential gearbox turns on ball bearings and transmits the torque to a sun shaft which turns the
single-stage epicyclic reduction-gear.
The single-stage epicyclic reduction-gear turns the output shaft through planet gears to decrease the
speed. Limit switches on the output shaft stop the motors at the 0 degrees and the 90 degrees positions.
Mechanical stops prevent more than 5 degrees of travel after the limit switch positions.
The output shaft can not turn the worm shaft.

The cut-out valve is a mechanically operated hydraulic unit. It has a casing that contains a sealed lining in
which a sealed spool moves to open or close the ports A, B or C. A spring keeps the spool at one end of its
travel when the valve is not operated. The spool connects to the input shaft through a link, an intermediate
shaft and push rod. The shafts turn on ball bearings and the two ends of the input shaft have splines. The
mechanism includes a shear pin which breaks if the spool becomes unserviceable and can not move.
The casing has a hole with an attached bush, where a rigging pin can be installed. The hole position aligns
with a spline cut-out on the input shaft.
In the Normal Extension and Retraction mode, port A is open to port B and port C is closed. When the input
shaft turns, it moves the spool in the lining. At 28 degrees, port A closes to B. At 30 degrees port B opens to
C.

The vent valve is a mechanically-operated hydraulic unit. It has a casing that contains a sealed lining in
which a sealed spool moves to open or close the ports A, B, C and D. A spring keeps the spool at one end
of its travel when the valve is not operated. The spool connects to a push rod which connects to the input
shaft. The input shaft turns on plain bearings and has splines at the two ends. The mechanism includes a
shear pin which breaks if the spool becomes unserviceable and can not move.
The casing has bushed holes where a rigging pin can be installed. The hole positions align with a spline cut-
out on the input shaft.
In the Normal Extension and Retraction mode, ports A, B, C and D are closed and port C is open to the
system return. When the shaft turns it moves the spool in the lining. In the 30 degree to 55 degree sector of
movement, ports A, B, C and D open.

The check valve has a body with a different sized thread at each end. The body contains a spring that holds
a poppet against a face in the body.
Hydraulic fluid pressure on the inlet side pushes against the face of the poppet. When the force on the
poppet face is more than that of the spring, the poppet moves away from the body face. This lets the
hydraulic fluid flow through to the outlet side. Hydraulic pressure on the outlet side closes the poppet
against the body face and prevents a fluid flow in this direction.
An arrow on the body shows the direction in which the fluid can flow.
F. Restrictor 5501GA
The restrictor has a body with a thread at each end. The body has a small hole through the center which
decreases the flow of fluid through the body.

When the landing-gear free-fall switches are set to DOWN, an electrical circuit is made to the motors of the
actuators. The actuators turn the output shaft and move the mechanical linkage to operate the components
in the sequence shown. When RESET is selected, the actuators turn back to their initial positions and
automatically set the system back to the Normal Extension and Retraction mode. The switches are set to
OFF after the system goes back to the Normal Extension and Retraction mode.
B. Indicating
There is no special indicating system for the position of the landing gear in the Free Fall Extension mode.
The indications given in the cockpit are the same as those for the Normal Extension and Retraction System
which are:
· the WHEEL page on the System Display (SD)
· the L/G downlock indicator lights on panel 312VU
· the light on the L/G control lever 6GA.
For these indications (Ref. AMM D/O 32-61-00-00) .
If the WHEEL page is not shown on the SD at the start of a free fall extension, it automatically shows after
30 seconds. When a free fall extension is completed the Engine Warning Display shows this data:
· L/G DOOR NOT CLOSED
· MAX SPEED 200.
