Quarterly Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake/

Multi-Hazard Drill (NSED) 2019

(3rd Quarter)

I. INTRODUCTION AND DRILL SCENARIO

Earthquake is one of the famous disasters that caused people died or injured. It cannot be detected when
and where it would be happened to anyone. This is mostly happened in places where people are hanging around
and working. Earthquake is understood by being a natural phenomenon caused by the constant movements of
the earth’s crustal plates and due to climate change too.

Connectively, ANAHAWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL conducted the 2nd Quarter Earthquake Drill
last August 8, 2019 at 10:20 in the morning. The main objective of the drill is to get prepared on what to do in
case earthquake arises.

The drill started with the ceremonial tapping of the siren bell where the pupils from Kindergarten to
Grade Six together with their teachers and some parents who were at the school at that time followed strictly
the three important things during an earthquake. These were the Ducking, Covering and Holding, keeping calm
and avoiding panic as well. They were grouped together according to the class where they belong. Then, all
classroom teachers did a headcount to make sure that all pupils are accounted for.

Before the conduct of the actual Earthquake Drill, the School DRR Coordinator conducted an
orientation, instructed and disseminated the information about the occurrence of earthquake as well as the needs
to carry out a drill to enhance the pupils’ awareness on the safety measures before, during and after an
earthquake. The School DRR Coordinator announced the termination of the drill.

Finally, it was indeed a success. Preparedness and mitigation are key and strategies in reducing disaster
risk.

II. ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED PRIOR TO THE CONDUCT ON EARTHQUAKE DRILL

Some of the activities held prior to the conduct of the quarterly earthquake drill are as follows:
A. Constant reminders given by the teacher advisers on the safety precautions and measures in case of
disasters like earthquakes;

C. Class orientation on the school evacuation plan and the school’s safe and danger zones during an
earthquake.
