Satellite is not a word ,not an instrument. It is the
RULER of the present day world. We can’t imagine
our world without communication.A grandfather
talks with his grandchildren who are in other
countries on video call,a scientist forecasts the
natural disasters and saves many lives with the help
of satellites only. From those days using of pigeons
for communication we are now in a living style in
which communication is super fast with all
electronic device. All these are because of different
satellites.
SATELLITE:
Satellite is a natural object moving around a larger
object in space,or an artificial object sent up into
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
space to travel around the Earth.Satellites are two
types .
1) Natural satellites.
2) Artificial satellites.
NATURAL SATELLITES:
A natural satellite is any celestial body in space that
orbits around a larger body.Moons are called
natural satellites because they orbit planets.
Generally moons means any large object that orbits
around a planet is called moon( small m).The Earth
has one moon called Moon(capital ‘M’).The Moon
takes 27.3 days to orbit the Earth once, moving at
an orbital speed of 1km/s.All planets in our solar
system except two Venus and Mercury have
natural satellites ,so called ‘moons’.
The earliest published discovery of a moon other
than Earth’s was by Galileo Galilei, who discovered
the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter in
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
1610.Over the following three centuries only a few
more moons were discovered.
ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES:
Artificial satellites are human-built objects orbiting
thr Earth and other planets in the solar
system. These are different from the natural
satellites or moons, that orbit planets, dwarf planets
and even asteroids.Artificial satellites are used to
study the Earth, other planets to help us
communicate and even to observe the distant
Universe.Satellites can even have people in them
,like the International Space Station and the Space
Shuttle.
SPUTNIK:
History changed on October 4,1957,When the
Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1.The
world’s first artificial satellite was about the size of
beach ball (58 cm or 22.8 inches in diameter),
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
weighed only 83.6kg and took about 98 minutes to
orbit the Earth on it’s elliptical path.
ARYABHATA:
Aryabhata was the India’s first satellite. It was laun-
-ched by India on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar,
a Russian rocket launch and development site in
Astrakhan Oblast using a Kosmos3M launch vehicle.
It was built by the Indian Space Research
Organisation(ISRO) to gain experience in building
and operating a satellite in space. The launch came
from the agreement between India the Soviet
Union directed by UR Rao and signed in 1972.It
allowed the USSR to use Indian ports for tracking
ships and launching vessels in return for launching
Indiansatellites.Aryabhata is first man made Indian
satellite. It was built to conduct experiments in X-
ray astronomy,aeronomics,and solar physics.All
faces were covered with soalr cells.A power failure
halted experiments after four days and 60 orbits
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
with all signals from the space craft lost after five
days of the operation.According to Soviet media
reports, the satellite continued to function and
transmit information for some time. The satellite
returned to Earth’s atmosphere on 11 February
1992.
