1. Sketch and explain any three kinematic inversion of a single slider crank chain

2. In toggle mechanism, as shown in Fig 1, D is constrained to move on a horizontal path.


The dimensions of various links are:
AB = 200 mm , BC = 300 mm OC = 150 mm BD = 450 mm
The crank OC is rotating in a counter clockwise direction at a speed of 180 rpm increasing at
the rate of 50 rad/s2. Find, for the given configuration,
(i) Velocity and acceleration of D and
(ii) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of BD

3. In a cam with translating roller follower, the follower axis is offset to the right of the cam
hinge by 12 mm. The roller radius is 10 mm and the cam rotates in the counter clockwise
direction. Layout the rise portion of the cam profile to meet the following specifications:
Rise takes place during 180o of cam rotation of which for the first 90o the rise is with constant
acceleration and the rest is with constant retardation. Take the seventh station points only.
The lift of the cam is 30 mm and the least radius of the cam is 25 mm.

4. Two 20o involute spur gears have a module of 10 mm. The addendum is one module. The
larger gear has 50 teeth and the pinion 13 teeth. Does the interference occur? If it occurs, to
what value should the pressure angle be changed to eliminate interference?

5. In an epicyclic gear train (Fig 2) the internal wheels A and B and compound wheels C and
D rotate independently about axis O. The wheels E and F rotate on pins fixed to the arm G. E
gears with A and C. Wheel F gears with B and D. All the wheels have the same module and
the numbers of teeth are: TC = 28; TD = 26; TE = TF = 18. Find (a) Number of teeth of A and
B (b) If the arm G makes 100 rpm clockwise and A is fixed, find speed of B.

1. Describe various inversions of a double slider-crank mechanism, giving examples with

2. In the toggle mechanism shown in Fig 1, the crank OA rotates at 210 rpm counter
clockwise, increasing at the rate of 60 rad/s2. For the given configuration, determine
(a) Velocity of the slider D
(b) Acceleration of the slider D
3. A flat faced mushroom follower is operated by uniformly rotating cam. The follower is
raised through a distance of 25 mm in 120o rotation of the cam, remains at rest for the next
30o and is lowered during further 120o rotation of the cam. The raising of the follower takes
place with cycloidal motion and lowering with uniform acceleration and deceleration.
However, the uniform acceleration is 2/3 of the uniform deceleration. The least radius of the
cam is 25 mm which rotated at 300 rpm.
(a) Draw the cam profile [14]
(b) Determine the values of the maximum acceleration during rising [3]
(c) Determine the value of the maximum acceleration during rising [3]

4. A pair of spur gear with involute teeth is to give a gear ratio of 4:1. The arc of approach is
not to be less than the circular pitch and the smaller wheel is the driver. The pressure angle
is 14 ½ degrees.
a) Calculate the least number of teeth that can be used on each wheel [10]
b) What is the addendum of the wheel in terms of the circular pitch? [10]

5. Fig 2 shows an epicyclic gear train in which the driving gear A has 20 teeth. The fixed
annular gear C has 150 teeth and the ratio of teeth in gears D and E is 21:50. If 2 kW of
power at a speed of 800 rpm is supplied to the gear A. Determine:
a) Speed and direction of rotation of gear E [14]
b) Fixing torque required at the gear C [6]

1. a) Explain with a neat sketch the inversions of four mechanism with examples [12]
b) Explain any two straight line generating mechanisms [4]

2. In the mechanism, as shown in Fig 1, the crank OA rotates at 20 revolutions per minutes
anticlockwise and gives motion to the sliding blocks B and D. The dimensions of the
various links are: OA = 300 mm; AB = 1200 mm; BC = 450 mm and CD = 450 mm.
For the given configuration, determine:
(i) the velocity of sliding at B and D; (ii) angular velocity of CD;
(iii) linear acceleration of D and (iv) angular acceleration of CD
3. Design cam profile for the following specifications:
Follower type = roller follower, offset to the right of cam axis by 18 mm; lift = 35 mm; base
circle radius = 50 mm; roller radius = 14 mm; out stroke with SHM in 0.05 sec; dwell for
0.0125 sec; return stroke with UARM, during 0.125 sec; dwell for the remaining period.
During return stroke, acceleration is 3/5 times retardation. Determine the maximum velocity
during out stroke and return stroke if the cam rotates at 240 rpm.

6. In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the crank and connecting rod are 125 mm and
500 mm respectively. The center of connecting rod is 250 mm from the slider. The crank
speed is 600 rpm clockwise. When the crank has turned 45o from the inner dead centre
position, determine:
i) Linear velocity and acceleration of the midpoint of the connecting rod
ii) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod

2. Find out the acceleration of the slider D and the angular acceleration of link CD for the
engine mechanism shown in Fig. The crank OA rotates uniformly at 180 rpm in clock
wise direction. The various lengths are: OA = 150 mm; AB = 450 mm; PB = 240 mm; BC
= 210 mm; CD = 660 mm [16]
3. A cam rotating clockwise with a uniform speed is to give the roller follower of 20 mm
diameter with the following motion:
(a) Follower to move outwards through a distance of 30 mm during 120o of cam
rotation
(b) Follower to dwell for 60o of cam rotation
(c) Follower to return to its initial position during 90o of cam rotation
(d) Follower to dwell for the remaining 90o of cam rotation
The minimum radius of the cam is 45 mm and the displacement of the follower is to take
place with simple harmonic motion on both the outward and return strokes. Draw the cam
profile when the line of stroke of the follower passes through the axis of the cam.
If the cam shaft rotates at uniform speed of 100 rpm, find the maximum velocity and
acceleration of a valve during raising and lowering.

4. Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3. The teeth are of
involute form of module 6. The standard addendum is 1 module. If the pressure angle is
18o and pinion rotates at 90 rpm, find (i) number of teeth on each wheel so that
interference is just avoided, (ii) the length of path of contact and (iii) the maximum
velocity of sliding between the teeth.

5. In an epicyclic gear train the internal wheels A and B and compound wheels C and D
rotates independently about axis O. The wheels E and F rotate on pins fixed to the arm G.
E gears with A and C. Wheel F gears with B and D. All the wheels have the same module
and the numbers of teeth are: TC = 28; TD = 26; TE = TF = 18.

6. a) A crank – rocker mechanism ABCD has dimensions: AB = 30 mm, BC = 90 mm, CD =
75 mm, and AD (fixed link) = 100 mm. Determine the maximum and minimum values of
transmission angle. Locate the toggle positions and indicate the corresponding crank angles
and transmission angle. [4]
b) In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the crank and connecting rod are 125 mm and
500 mm respectively. The centre of gravity of the connecting rod is 250 mm from the slider.
The crank speed is 600 rpm clockwise. When the crank has turned 45o from the inner dead
centre position, determine angular velocity and angular acceleration of connecting rod. [12]

2. The driving crank AB of the mechanism shown in Fig 1 is rotating at a uniform speed of
200 rpm clockwise direction. For the given configuration, calculate the acceleration of the
ram R.
3. The following data is related to a symmetrical circular arc cam operating a flat-faced
follower:
Least radius of the cam = 27.5 mm; total lift = 12.5 mm; angle of lift = 55 o; nose radius =
3 mm; speed of cam = 600 rpm
Find:
(a) Draw the profile of the cam [12]
(b) Dsitance between the cam centre and nose centres [2]
(c) Radius of the circular flank [2]
(d) Angle of contact on the circular flank [4]
4. The centre distance between two spur gears in a mesh approximately 275 mm. The gear
ratio is 10 to 1. The pinion transmits 360 kW at 1800 rpm. The pressure angle of the
involute teeth is 20o and the addendum is equal to one module. The limiting value of the
normal tooth pressure is 1 kN/mm of the width. Determine
(a) Nearest standard module so that interference does not occur [8]

5. Fig 2 shows a Humpage gear used in a lathe headstock. The number of teeth on the wheels
B, C, D , E and F are 18, 54, 22, 44 and 72 respectively. If the shaft G rotates at 200 rpm,
what will be the speed of the shaft H when
(a) F is held stationary?
(b) it is rotated at 30 rpm opposite to G?

1. Two 20o full-depth involute spur gears have 30 and 48 teeth in mesh. The pinion rotates at
800 rpm. The module is 4 mm. Find the sliding velocities at the engagement and
disengagement of a pair of teeth and contact ratio. If the interference is just avoided, find
the (i) the addenda of the wheel and pinion, (ii) the path of contact, (iii) the maximum
sliding velocity of sliding at engagement and disengagement of a pair of teeth and (iv)
contact ratio?

2. Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edged follower from the following data:
(i) Follower to move outward through 40 mm during 60o of a cam rotation, (ii) Follower to
dwell for the next 45o (iii) Follower to return its original position during next 90o and (iv)
Follower to dwell for the rest of cam rotation. The displacement of the follower is to take
place with simple harmonic motion during both outward and return strokes. The least
radius of cam is 50 mm. If the cam rotates at 300 rpm, determine the maximum velocity
and acceleration of the follower during the outward stroke and return stroke.

3. For the quick return mechanism shown in Fig 1. Determine the velocity and acceleration of
point D. Crank AB rotates at 40 rpm.
AB = 40 cm; OC = 20 cm; CD = 8 cm
4. An epicyclic gear train consists of a sun wheel S, a stationary internal gear E and three
identical planet wheels P carried on a star-shaped planet carrier C. The size of different
tooth wheels is such that the planet carrier C rotates at 1/5th of the speed of the sun wheel
S. The minimum number of teeth on any wheel is 16. The driving torque on the sun wheel
is 100 Nm. Determine:
(i) Number of teeth on different wheels of the train, and
(ii) Torque necessary to keep the internal gear stationary (refer Fig 2)

5. Describe the inversions of double slider crank chain. Give examples for each inversion.
