Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric
shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three
measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique
triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.
Objectives
• Students will be able to identify whether a set of three angle measures
and/or side lengths will result in a unique triangle, more than one
possible triangle, or no triangle.
Materials
• “Analyzing Triangle Side Lengths and Angles” mat
• 15 cards per group
• Scissors (for prep)
• Paper clips or baggies (for storage)
Procedure
• Before students arrive, cut out the Triangle Side Lengths and Angles Cards
and store in plastic baggies or secure with paperclips. Make copies of the
Analyzing Triangle Side Lengths and Angles mat. Consider making enough
copies so that students can work in pairs to complete this sort activity.
• Ask students to sort the cards based on whether a unique triangle, more
than one triangle, or no triangle is possible.
• Summarize with students by asking for answers and discussing strategies
used to determine the correct category.
