2.8) Peer Support Specialist Programme
The Peer Support Specialist Programme aims to provide opportunities for persons with mental health issues to
leverage on their lived experience of recovery to support others in their recovery journey in a formal and
structured training as well as equipping them with competencies as a Peer Support Specialist. To further
prepare social service organisations in creating an inclusive and supportive work environment towards peer
support workforce, organisational staff will be trained. The programme also ensures renewal of capacity by
building up peer trainers to train persons with mental health issues and the organisational staff in order to
sustain a recovery-oriented peer support eco-system in Singapore.
The Peer Support Specialist Programme is designed and developed by National Council of Social Service (NCSS)
in collaboration with the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and mental health organisations and will be used in
both the social service and healthcare sectors.
Note: The term “Peer Support Specialist” refers to persons with mental health issues who are trained and
employed to perform peer support work using their lived experience of recovery in the mental health setting.
The actual job title is decided by the organisations that employ persons with mental health issues in the
capacity of Peer Support Specialist.
There are five training modules in the Peer Support Specialist Programme, each module targeting a different
group in the recovery-oriented eco-system.
