General Councils of The Church

The Council of Jerusalem in 49 AD addressed the controversy of whether Gentile converts must follow Mosaic Law. It was attended by apostles, presbyters, Paul, Barnabas, and James, and decreed that Gentiles did not need to follow Jewish customs. The First Council of Constantinople in 381 focused on combating Arianism and establishing that Christ was fully divine. It was attended by 186 bishops including Basil the Great and reaffirmed the Nicene Creed. The Council of Chalcedon in 451 addressed the Monophysite heresy that Christ had only a divine nature. It was attended by over 600 bishops and declared that Christ had two natures, human and divine.
