Foremost, the researchers would like to express their gratitude to their research

adviser who’s been always guiding and not being tired of checking and giving advices all

Chapter 1

Introduction

Rationale

In entering the state of globalization, many things have changed. Nowadays, people

are living in an information age dependent upon technology. Different types of job relies

on getting information and technology enables them to access faster, process efficiently

and store information. Even in school, technology is very useful. The advancement of the

technology allows us to create and see the bigger picture. However, even with this people,

somewhat chooses to take the hard step. Just like school-enrolment, grading, and etc. still

needs a lot of effort and time.

So the researchers came up with an idea to create a system that would enhance the

school’s (Badian National High School) current grading system. The study is entitled

“MODIFIED ONLINE GRADE VIEWING FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

OF BADIAN NHS S.Y. 2018-2019”. It will allow students to view their grades online with

the use of their I.D. number. Programming language that are used are PHP and SQL. The

admin also has an involvement with the said system. Whenever there are errors or the

teacher wanted to change something, only the admin can change it but of course with the

signal/instruction of the teacher. It is way much better less hustle for the teacher and

administrators and is accessible to students as well as to their parents-only they need to be

aware of the system.

The study will be a great help to the school. The compilation of the grade’s record

will be faster, easier and more organize. It doesn’t need to be printed to show it to the

students because it’s just a click away. Though it needs internet connection but it is very

accessible to them. It will also cause less pressure and stress to the teacher.

Review of Related Literature

Grading system is an exercise in professional judgment on the part of the teachers.

It involves the collection and evaluation of student’s achievement or performance. In

consumption to the statement of Balboa (2013), online grading system is a web-based

application that can be used to store the student’s grades. They has an account credentials

to get access to their grades that has been posted online. Parents also can view and be

updated on the status and performance of their children in school.

Innovation have made possible for the operations of the computer easy enough to

process record systems such as, creation of data records, storing, filing and retrieval of

data. Online student portal with grades notification via SMS raises the availability of

certain student’s record like grades, accounts and class schedule. It will provide less effort

and a more effective and timely outcome for the students and the registrar (Badoria et al.,

2010).

On the other hand, Hearspiker and Verma (2011) stated that, online grading system

is the database system that is capable of encoding and viewing of student’s grades online
in order for the process to be minimize, limit the amount of time consumed and easy

retrieval of data for a long term period. Moreover, it is also a web-based applications that

can be captivating and may obscure the fact that modeling an application’s business logic

whether it is being implemented in a web page, a computer or an object remains the central

focus of the project. Web-based application development.

Moreover, the used of the online inquiry is not for the consumption of the students

but, it is more advantage to the parents and providers a way from which they can monitor

the status of their children in school anytime and anywhere. The online system provides a

way in which the communication between the university and the parents are still connected

even though they are far from the school (Chokzi 2011).

Student University’s student information system is a secure, web accessible

interactive computer system that allows user access to grade reports, transcripts, schedule

of classes and remaining balance for the semester and register for classes online. Through

the system, students were assigned a unique identification number.All data to and from the

university wre using that unique identification number.

According to Dy, B. (2014) stated that the online grading system that they have

been working for the Philippine Chen Kuang High School lessens the task and effort of the

teachers in encoding the grades of the students. It send grades automatically and shortens

the process of inquiry of grades.

In the study of Bella, B.(2012), online grade encoding and inquiry system via SMS

technology for San Mateo Municipal College will lessen the task and effort of registrar in
encoding the grades of the students. The system can send grades automatically. It shortens

the process of inquiry of grades. By the use of this, the students can inquire grades through

SMS technology. The instructor can encode grades through online and submit

automatically to the administrator or registrar.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to create a system that will allow students to view their grades

online.

It will also answer the following sub questions:

a) How efficient the system will be?

b) How to develop a module that will allow the students to view their grades

online?

c) Does the system offers better security?

Significance of the Study

The study was made to enhance the school's current grading system.

It will benefit the following:

School- The study will give benefits to the school the system is feasible, economically

viable and as accurate as manually grading system.

Registrars- Lessen their task in preparing of summary of grades of the students. When the

day gets rough, grades need not to be organize for the system itself will take care of the

grades organization.

Teachers- It will allow them to make grades and directly displays it right after inputting

the student's score. It will cause them less hustle, less effort, and lessen the time for the

transaction of encoding and releasing the grades of the students.

Students- To be able to view their grades online. It will also push them to pass their

assignments, projects and activities on time or before the given time so that right after the

quarterly assessment, they'll be able to see their grades. Further, their parents need not to

come to school to have their sons and daughters grade.

Future Researchers- It will equip them with the knowledge about the grading system. The

online grade viewing system may serve as a reference for the future researchers for the

improvement of the system in the near future. The study will serve as training for the

proponents, to enhance their skills in web development.

Scope and Limitation

The study only focuses on enhancing the current grading system of the said school.

The administrator has an authority to add, edit, view and delete subjects with the

permission of the teacher. Password can also be change by the administrators and the

teachers to secure the encoding of grades in online system. However, the system can't be

used for conversation and it needs internet connection. Teachers who are not really techy

needs to be oriented and instructed about the system. It does not offer free tutorial on what

to do's and the researchers only inputted students’ second semester grades and only

focusing on one strand (ICT Programming) for the program testing. Other than that, if the

teachers submitted wrong grades of student, the online system is not reliable in human

error. The main purpose of this research is to make sure that the database program will run.

Research Respondents

The researchers respondent is Mrs. Rollynda Ruth T. Dacillo an adviser of Grade

12-ICT of Badian National High School- Poblacion, Badian, Cebu. She is needed to input

grades, identifies if the system really works for its purpose and to what it is being

programed. She will only view the portal wherein she’s most suited to open-the teacher’s

portal. The testing will be done inside the campus of the school.

Research Environment

The researchers conducted this study specifically at Badian National High School-

Poblacion, Badian, Cebu. The respondents are the Admin/registrar, teacher and SHS

students. Badian NHS is a public High School in the Municipality of Badian in the

provinceof Cebu. It is located at approximately 9°51'55.8"N 123°23'41.4"E in the island

of Cebu. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 19 meters or 62.3 feet above sea

level.

Methodology

Rapid Application Development (RAD) was used as the system development

method. The proponent utilized Rapid Application Development approach in order to

ensure the proponent that the system is really the users’ need. Rapid Application

Development (RAD) is a development lifecycle designed to give much faster development

and higher-quality results than those achieved with the traditional lifecycle. It is designed

to take the maximum advantage of powerful development software. Models, Technologies,

Tools, and Techniques Used The following are the models, technologies, tools and

techniques that the proponent used in the construction of the MODIFIED ONLINE

GRADE VIEWING FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF BADIAN NHS S.Y.

2018-2019. The researchers used Unified Modeling Language (UML) in the illustration of

the system to help them visualize the functions, flow and the components that will compose

the system. These diagrams were used to illustrate the overview and functional

requirements of the system. PHP or Hypertext Preprocessor, a widely-used general-

purpose scripting language especially suited for Web development that could be embedded

into HTML, was utilized to develop a dynamic and functional web-based system to support

and serve the online grade viewing system. Meanwhile, MySQL was used as the database.
In developing the system, Visual Studio Code was the Integrated Environment

Development (IDE) of the system which is very effective when developing using PHP and

MySQL. Furthermore, Adobe Photoshop CS5 for designing the interface of the web-based

part of the proposed system and for editing the images and MySQL for the database

management system.

System Features
 Fig. 4 shows the UML use case diagram of the system. This presents the

functionalities of the system and the system‘s requirements from the user‘s perspective.

The system has three actors: the administrator, the teacher, and student.

 The administrator, as shown in Fig. 5, oversees the whole operation of the system.

The administrator manages the user account of the would-be-users, where the administrator

can add, edit, delete, and view user accounts as administrator.

Shown in figure six is the teacher’s portal wherein they can input/encode the

student’s grade.

In figure seven, student’s portal is shown in which they can view their grades and

edit their personal information. Their username will serve as their username as well as their

password but they can change it to make it more private as soon as the access were given.

Information will also be posted in the announcement board and so it will be accessible to

them.

Recommendation

Based on the foregoing conclusions, the researchers recommended to the future

researchers to enhance the system’s capability and to improvise the creation of schedule of

teaching assignment of the faculty members to automatically extend the capability and

functionality of the system. Furthermore, the researchers should give more time and start

the study as early as it is given. Other than that, they should include the giving of cerficates,

good moral and diploma to the graduates through the website-ready to print, in which the

researchers didn’t have the chance to do so.

In conclusion to the researchers study, the testing of the system was successful. Its

development was managed carefully to come up with the desired output. The respondent

was also satisfied and has given a good feedback.

The main purpose of the researcher is to make sure that their program would run so

that it can be a great help most of all to the parents, teachers and students. Fortunately, the

study effectively work to its given command. The three portals-administrators, teachers

and students, was showed and being tested. The editing and deleting of grades by the

teacher was managed carefully as well as the students portal wherein they are able to view

their grades with their identification number as the username and password as for the

testing. The respondent had been satisfied with the software. As to give point, an interview

was conducted with the respondent after the testing and questions were asked and was

honestly being answered.

Furthermore, the system is very useful not only for the students access but is also

to the parents who are busy with their different jobs. Through the test conducted, its

efficacy was also tested. Other than that, it lessens effort and is not time consuming

compared to the current system that the school has. Students can also access it anywhere

and anytime, may it in computer or mobile phones but of course with the help of internet.

Database - a structured set of data held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in
various ways.

Rapid Application Development - Rapid application development (RAD) is an agile project

management strategy popular in software development.

Unified Modelling Language - is a standardized modeling language consisting of an

integrated set of diagrams, developed to help system and software developers for
specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of software systems,
as well as for business modeling and other non-software systems.

PHP(HYpertext Preprocessor) - is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting

language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

HTML(Hypertext Markup Language) - is the most basic building block of the Web. It
defines the meaning and structure of web content.

MySQL - is the world’s most popular open source database, enabling the cost-effective
delivery of reliable, high-performance and scalable Web-based and embedded database
applications.

Integrated Environment Development(IDE) - is an application that facilitates application

development. IDEs are designed to encompass all programming tasks in one application.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is really Photoshop 12; Adobe changed the name to CS, "Creative
Suite," back at version 8 to make it seem bright and new, as opposed to a perennial update.
The improvements in CS5 are things that let pros who use Photoshop all day, every day,
get more done faster.

Processor - a processor, or "microprocessor," is a small chip that resides in computers and

other electronic devices. Its basic job is to receive input and provide the appropriate output.

While this may seem like a simple task, modern processors can handle trillions of
calculations per second.

RAM - is an acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be
accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the
preceding bytes. RAM is found in servers, PCs, tablets, smartphones and other devices,
such as printers.

Hard disk - a rigid nonremovable magnetic disk with a large data storage capacity.

Visual Studio Code - is a source code editor developed by Microsoft for Windows, Linux
and macOS. It includes support for debugging, embedded Git control, syntax highlighting,
intelligent codecompletion, snippets, and code refactoring.

XAMPP - is a free and open-source cross-platform web server solution stack package
developed by Apache Friends, consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB
database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages.

Windows 7 - is an operating system released by Microsoft on October 22, 2009. It follows

the previous (sixth) version of Windows, called Windows Vista.
