GENERAL
S e c t i on 2
2-A VJhenthe Hydrornatic Brake ís removed from service for any length of time, a
surplus guantity of No.2 waterproof grease should be pumped into all of the
grease fittings to assure purging the water frorn the bearing and seal cavities.
It is advisable to fill the brake with lubricating oil, or a suitable rust
inhibitor to prevent the formation of rust and scale within the brake.
2-B The item numbers given in the following instructions correspond to the item
part numbers used on the attached parts I íst and assembly drawirEs"
2-C When ordering parts, the brake assembly number and seríal number are required
to assure correct part replacement. The assembly number and serial number are
stamped on the name plate (y) of the Hydromatic Brake"
2-D During disassembly, the various parts that are to be reassembled should be
thoroughly cleaned and wrapped as they are removed.
?-E All rrorr rings removed during disassembly must be replaced by new ones. A
small cut or nick or prolonged compression of thetroil ring wilI render it
unsatisfactory for future service. Care must be used in the reassembly of
parts contaíning rrorr rings to prevent damaging the t'orrring.
2-F All rrorr rings and I ip seals should be lubricated with grease or oil to
facil itate the reassembly process.
2-G No problems should aríse during repair of the Hydrornatic Brake provided the
fol lowing instructions are fol lowed expl icitly.

ING: The case of seal (14) fits very close to sleeve (9) and will
damage the sleeve if the brake shaft is allowed to move wi th i n
the brake housing" To avoid damaging the seal s I eeve, wi th the
seal instal led, both bearings must be instal led and all bearing
clearancg or end play, removed before the brake is moved or hoisted.

DI SASSEMBLY
Section 3.
3-A The 122 Hydromatic Brake is different in constructíon than most of the Hydromatic
Brakes. The shaft and rotors are supported by two bearings located on one side
of the rotors, whereas in most brakes, the shaft and rotors are supported by
two bearings with one located on each síde of the rotors. The cantilever type
design of the 122 Brake requires only one seal ing element ínstead of two
seal ing elements.
3-B In order to replace the bearings and seals, the brake must be completely
disassembled. lt is not advisable to replace, the bearings and seals frorn the
shaft s íde of the braE

is about 2-l/2'r frorn end of shaft (l), or until rotor (3) is resting against
snap ring (26).
CAUTION: lf rotor (3) is pressed too far onto shaft (l), ¡t w¡ll force snap
ring (26) out of the groove allowing the roioi'(¡) face to contact
the stator (6) face. Should this happen, loosen the eight cap screws
(17) so that the bearing retainer (31) will move out of the bearing
r:etainer housing (ZS) .llowing the rotor (3) to mate solidly with
stator (6). Force shaft (l ) back through rotor (3) by striking rotor
end of shaft (l). Retighten eight cap screws (17).
-9 -
t+-U press, drive, or shrink rotor (2) onto shaft (l) until snap ring (26) can
barely be assembled into the groove on end of shaft (l). Install snap ring
(26) into groov e.
NSTE A - The 122 Brake does not require adjustment for correct clearance
between the rotor and stator faces. The rotor and stator spacing
is premachined into the brake at the factory" Provided the rotors
are assembled on the shaft (l) between the two snap rings (26),
the spacing is correct.
4-V Removethe two cap sc re\^rs (33) hol d i ng stator (6) to the bear ing reta i ner hous i ng
(25) and install center ring (8) after "otrring (27) has been installed in groove

S ection 5 .
5-n Since the instructions, for replacement of rotors and stators, has been
outlined in previous sections, they will not be repeated.
5-B In order to disassemble the brake to replace the rotors and stators, refer to
Section 3, Paragraphs 3-A to 3-K.
5-C To reassemble the brake for replacement of the rotors and stators, refer to

- II
LUBRICATION
Sect ion 6.
6-A Lubrication instructions are included on the.name plate (37) of the Hydromatic
Brake, but they will be repeated for convenience.
6-B l,Jhenin use, the seals (14)(ll) and bearings (32), in the brake, should be
lubricated before and after each trip with several strokes of the grease
compressor through the grease fittings (24) provided" Use No. 2 water
resistant (calcium base) grease (Texaco Novatex 2 or equivalent).
6-C After repairs have been made to the Hydromatic Brake that involves removal of
the seals (t+)(15) and/or bearings (lZ), ¡t is important that a sufficent
quantity of grease be pumped into the cavaties around the bearings and seals
to fill the cavaties cornpletely before the brake is placed into operation.
VJhenrepairs are made in a field shop, the shop personnel and drilling crew
may depend upon each other to fill the brake with grease. Thus, to avoid
any question or doubt about proper lubrication, both the shop personnel and
drilling crew should check the brake for lubrication" The lack of proper
lubrication will cause premature failure of the bearings or seals"
