This chapter is divided into five different parts: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Statement
of the Problem and Hypothesis, (3) Significance of the Study, (4) Definition of Terms, and (5)
Delimitation of the Study.
Part One, Background of the Study, includes the basic information about the study. It also
indicates the importance and validity of the problem chosen for the study, the potential
contribution of the study, the need for the research, and the background information included in
the study.
Part Two, Statement of the Problem, provides specific questions that the researcher seeks
to answer. It also indicates the purpose of the study and specifically, it states both descriptive
and inferential questions.
Part Three, Significance of the Study, gives the people an idea on how relevant the study is
to other researchers. It also states the importance of the study, and the benefits to be derived
from the results of the study.
Part Four, Definition of Terms, defines the words for the purposes and clarity and
understanding. It includes conceptual definition and operational definition.

Background of the Study
The concept of academic performance has become a source of concern in researcher,
especially as the academic performance of the student is declining. Academic performance is
defined or regarded as a participant examination grades at the end of a given duration ( term,
semester and program). It could also be seen as the level of performance in a particular field of
study. Higher scores indicate higher academic performance.
In an academic institution, these basic needs go beyond food, shelter, clothing and
energy. In addiction these four, the basic needs of a student extend to the cost of transportation,
health care stationary and more recently the information and communication technology. Many
students have finding it difficult feeding themselves because they lack on money to do so.
Staying in school and graduating on time is important factor for student and their
families. Greater financial burdens may lead student to reduce course work or drop out school
for paid work. A web based survey( N= 503) was conducted in fall 2004 at a large public
university to examine the characteristics of student who experienced dropping out or reducing
crdit hours to financial reasons. Analyses were conducted to compare these students with those
who did not drop out reduce their coursework.
We conducted the study to determine the Relationship of Financial Stress and Academic
performance of Senior High School Student.
