Praxis Core Exam Analysis

In order to be admitted into a four-year undergraduate teaching program, I have to first pass

the Praxis Core Exam—which includes three timed sections in Math, Reading, and Writing. The

degree program at the College of Southern Nevada is a two-year program that is intended to be a

school for me to get all my core required classes, and then transition into a four-year program,

such as UNLV. When it comes to the official Praxis Core exam, I have a few options. I can take

all three sections at once—which takes five hours—or, I can spilt it up into the individual exams

and take them on different days. Each section has a different passing score. For mathematics, I

need a 150 to pass, to pass reading I need to score a 156, and to pass the writing section, I need a

162 (ETS.org 2019). It’s important to note that all of these scores are specific for Nevada. Each

state has their own score that they consider passing.

I have yet to take my official Praxis Core exam, however I have been studying in preparation

for it. I’m scheduled to take my exam on October 4th, 2019. I have purchased two study books—

Praxis Core for Dummies and Praxis Core Study Guide 2019 & 2020: Praxis Core Math,

Reading, and Writing (5732, 5712, 5722) [Core Academic Skills for Educators]—specifically

related to the Praxis Core exam. These books have been helping me study by going over testing

strategies, practice questions, and explaining every answer entirely. I’ve also been going through

Khan Academy, and its study sessions and questions. If I’m being completely honest with

myself, I can probably study more in the last few weeks before my exam

On my Praxis Core exam practice tests, I did not score nearly as well as I wished. I was

slightly surprised with my math score—I expected it to be higher. I was not surprised with my

reading score; however, I know it needs to be a lot higher. One the math test, I scored a 75%

which is borderline for passing. For the writing test, I scored a 70% which is also borderline

passing. For the reading test, however, I scored a 41% which means I need significant

improvement. These scores were really upsetting to me, because, while I knew I needed to study

more, I thought I would score a bit higher on the tests. These scores are showing me what’s

required of me in the next few weeks before my exam to what needs to be studied.

After taking these practice tests, and writing this analysis, I’m realizing how much studying

needs to be done prior to my exam date. I knew I needed to study a lot in my reading section, but

now I see by how much. Thanks to these tests, I’m also shown what parts of each test needs to be

studied the most. I plan on scheduling a small section of time each day to study, rather than try to

cram it all in the last week. I also plan on using my study books more constantly and using the

free websites—such as Khan Academy—more regularly and intensely. I’m confident that if I do

these things, and put in all my effort, I’ll be able to pass my exam in a few weeks.
