Case Study On LCR Meter
Introduction:-
An LCR meter is used to measure the impedance of a circuit or a device. This project
report explains the Uses, Types, and some parameters related to LCR meters.
Abstract:-
An LCR meter is a type of electronic test equipment used to measure the inductance (L),
capacitance (C), and resistance (R), of an electronic component. Hence, the name is LCR
meter.
In the simpler versions of this instrument impedance was measured internally and convert
for display to the corresponding capacitance or inductance value.
An LCR meter measures the following parameters related to a circuit:-
Inductance.
Capacitance.
Resistance.
Dissipation Factor.
Quality Factor.
Current.
Voltage
Phase angle between the current and voltage
Conductance.
Susceptance.
Working Principle:-
We pass an AC voltage through a DUT (Device Under Test). Now the LCR meter is used
to measure the voltage and the current across the DUT. The magnitude of the impedance
can be calculated from the ratio of these two quantities.
The bridge is adjusted in null position in order to balance it completely. Beside, the
sensitivity of the meter should also be adjusted along with balancing of the bridge. The
output from the bridge is fed to emitter follower circuit is given as an input to detector
amplifier

Case Study On LCR Meter
The significant of detector amplifier can be understood by the fact that if the measuring
signal is low in magnitude, it will not be able to move the indicator of PMMC meter.
Thus, in order to achieve the sustainable indication we need to have magnitude measuring
signal.
But, it is often observed that while dealing with the measuring process, the magnitude of
the measuring process, the magnitude of measuring signal falls down due to attenuation
factor. The problem to this solution is to utilize an amplifier.
The rectifier is used in the circuit to convert the AC signal into DC signal. When the
bridge is provided with AC excitation then at the output end of the bridge the AC signal
needs transformation into DC signal.
Construction:-
When there is a change in the current in the flowing through a conductor, a
corresponding change is induced in the voltage in it and in conductor surrounding it.
This property is known as inductance.
The ability of a body or a conductor to store electrical charge is known as capacitance.
The opposition that a conductor offers to the passage of electric current it is called
resistance.
An LCR meter can also be used be used to measure the inductance variation with
inductance variation with respect to the rotor position in permanent magnet machines.
Handheld LCR meters typically have selectable test frequencies of more than 100 Hz,
120 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz for top end meters. The display resolution and measurement
capacity will typically change with the applied test frequency since the circuitry is more
sensitive or less for given component (i.e., an inductor or capacitor) as the test
frequency changes.
The LCR meters sometimes have selectable test frequencies of more than 100 kHz.
They often include option to superimpose a DC voltage or current in the AC measuring
signal.
Lower and meters might offer the possibility to externally supply these DC voltages or
current while higher and device can supply them internally.

Applications:-
It is used to measures the inductance, capacitance, resistance in the circuit.
It is used to measure the Q factor (Quality Factor).
It is also used to measure the current and voltage.
Phase angle between the current and voltage will be measured by LCR meter.
It is measures the conductance and susceptance in the electrical circuit.

Protection of LCR meter:-
One should be extreme careful while providing excitation to the bridge of LCR meter.
This is because if the value of voltage applied to the bridge is high the circuit gets burn
out. Thus, for the protection of LCR meter, we can also use a circuit of limiting diodes at
the end of the circuit of the LCR. This will provide over-voltage provide.
Conclusion of project:-
When we are measuring the unknown value value of component, select the proper range
of the LCR meter. Or select the highest value. This is because we do not know the range
of the component. After this achieve the null deflection in the LCR by adjusting the
range, loss factor are present.
