Define the following terms: 
1. Personality: A combination of your feelings, likes, dislikes, attitudes, abilities, and 
habits.

Heredity, environment, and behavior 
 
2. Empathy: Identifying with and sharing another person’s feelings.   
 
3. Resilience: The ability to recover from problems or loss.  
 
4. Stress: The body’s response to change.   
 
5. Stressor: Anything that causes stress.   
 
6. Adrenaline: A hormone that gives the body extra energy.   
 
7. Impulsive behavior: Acting or doing something without forethought. The consequences 
are not considered.  
 
→ Why can impulsive behavior be dangerous?  
It can be dangerous, result in injury to self or others, damage your reputation, hurt 
one’s family, lead to issues with the law, damage property, cause you to lose a spot on 
a team, lower your grades, or result in the loss of money.  
 
8. List the effects of excess stress on the following:

of parents. 
 
10. List four ways to cope with or manage stress. 
Eat well, get enough rest, relax, laugh, physical activity, maintain a positive outlook, 
socialize with family and friends, manage your time.  
 
11. List four effective time management strategies. 
Arrange the hours in your day, don’t procrastinate, plan ahead, make a to-do list, divide 
big assignments into smaller parts.  
 
 
Define the following terms: 
12. Anxiety disorder: Extreme fear of real or imaginary situations that get in the way of 
normal activities.  
 
→ What are four examples? Explain them.  
Panic Disorder/Panic Attacks - Intense feelings of fear for a short period of time. 
Sometimes, there seems to be no apparent reason for the feelings. Body prepared for 
fight or flight. Increased heart rate, sweaty and dizzy, feel flushed or chilled, chest 
pains.  
 
Phobia - Exaggerated or unrealistic fear of something specific. Some phobias interfere 
with normal, everyday activities. Person may go out of the way to avoid the object or 
situation they fear.  
 
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Unwanted thoughts that may not make sense. Person 
may feel as though they must perform a certain activity. Doing this activity may make 
feelings go away for a short period of time, but they quickly return. Feeling compelled to 
repeat behaviors or mental acts to prevent distress.  
 
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Bad memories of an event for a long time. Recurrent 
dreams about traumatic event. Feeling as though the event is recurring. Avoiding people 
or situations that are reminders of the event.  
 
13. Mood disorder: A mental & emotional problem in which a person undergoes mood 
swings that seem extreme, inappropriate, or last a long time.  
 
→ What are two examples? Explain them.  
Depression - Person feels strong sense of hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, 
guilt, and extreme sadness. Feelings may continue for weeks or months. May lose 
interest in activities they used to enjoy. Could lead to self-injury and suicide.  
 
Bipolar Disorder - Extreme mood swings for no apparent reason. Alternating between 
periods of excessive activity, called mania, and depression. During times of mania, 
person has unrealistic belief of abilities. Can lead to poor judgment and risk-taking 
behavior.  
 
14. List examples of self-destructive behaviors. 
Cutting, burning, bruising, breaking bones, biting, scratching, branding, head banging, 
hair pulling, skin picking, hitting, tattooing.  
 
15. List reasons for self-destructive behaviors.  
Feelings of emptiness, loneliness, and helplessness. Attempt to feel more in control of 
their life. Not understood by others. A way to deal with emotional pain. Unable to 
express feelings.  
 
16. List Truths/Myths about self-destructive behaviors:
