A. Rationale
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment
that causes adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy,
such as noise, heat or light and one of the Major forms of pollution is Air pollution which
is very dangerous to us So we think of a plant the can be a component in producing an
affordable device that will help us to reduce the amount of pollution in a certain place.
Air pollution can take the form of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide or
sulfur dioxide, which are warming the planet through the greenhouse effect. According to
the EPA, the greenhouse effect is when gases absorb the infrared radiation that is released
from the Earth, preventing the heat from escaping. Air pollution kills more than 2 million
people each year, according to a study published in the journal of Environmental
Research Letters. The effects of air pollution on human health can vary widely depending
on the pollutant, according to Hugh Sealy, professor and director of the environmental
and occupational health track at the Department of Public Health and Preventive
Medicine, St. George's University, St. George's, Grenada. If the pollutant is highly toxic,
the effects on health can be widespread and severe.
According to research,Peace lilies have been found to be very good at removing
these two chemicals from the air. They absorb the pollutants from the air through their
leaves, and then send them to their roots, where they're broken down by microbes in the
soil.
Peace lily they are sturdy plants with glossy, dark green oval leaves that narrow to
a point. The leaves rise directly from the soil. These plants also periodically produce
lightly fragrant white flowers that resemble calla lilies. The long-lasting flowers start out
pale green and slowly turn creamy white as they open.
From this case, the researchers came up with the study of using peace lily as a
component for making a device that can possibly absorb polluted air.
B. Research Questions, Hypotheses and Expected Outcome
Generally, the current study will evaluate the capability of peace lily
(spathiphyllum) to absorb air pollutants.
Specifically, the study will seek answers to the following questions:
1. How much air pollutants can be absorbed by peace lily?
2. Is there a significant difference on the amount of air pollutants absorb by the plant
using
a. 2 pieces of peace lily leaves
b. 3 pieces of peace lily leaves
c. 4 pieces of peace lily leaves
3. Is there a significant difference in the amount of air pollutants absorb using peace lily
leaves (the experimental product) and the other plants.
Hypothesis
The current study will be guided by the following hypothesis:
1. Peace lily plant cannot absorb air pollutants.
2. There is no significant difference on the amount of air pollutants absorb using
a. 2 pieces of peace lily leaves
b.3 pieces of peace lily leaves
c. 4 pieces of peace lily leaves
3. There is no significant difference in the amount of air pollutants absorb using peace
lily leaves (the experimental product) and the other plants.
Expected Outcome and Goals of the Study
The current study will investigate on how can peace lily leaves solve the problem
in polluted air that will be later used as the best method to produce an affordable device
that can help us to reduce the amount of polluted air and help people suffering from
asthma.
Meanwhile, this device can really help us and also our country because this device
is not only use for reducing the amount of pollutants but can also be used to produce
a fresh air for us to breathe.
C. Research Methods
a. Collection and Preparation of Materials
Peace lily (spathiphyllum) plant will be collected from the garden. Exhaust fan if
already available will be found in the bathroom.
Distilled water, gloves, mask, fishnet, few pieces of wood, hammer, and nails will
be prepared by the researchers
Standard Experimental Procedure
Peace lily leaves will be cut into small pieces. These will be placed in the fishnet
to make sure that it won’t fall. The experimental product will be placed in the exhaust
fan.
RESEARCH DESIGN
Experimental single group design will be used in the study. Experimentation will
be based from the number of peace lily leaves used.
