The Effect of Bullying to the Academic

Performance of the Learner

Introduction.

Bullying is a Big issue and bullying behavior is a serious problem It is happening


anywhere and anytime. To deepen our understanding bullying has been defined by
many scholars and organizations differently. The classical definition is first proposed by
Olweus as “intentional and repeated acts that occur through physical, verbal, and
relational form of situations where a power difference is present.” Ditch the Label states
that No one is born a bully it is a learnt behavior and not an innate characteristic of
anyone so there is a reason behind bullying and there is many kind of bullying such as
cyber bullying, subtle bullying within the friendship such as manipulation, intimidation
and social exclusion as well as indirect bullying such as the spreading of harmful
rumors, but this study focuses on the effects of bullying to the academic performance of
the learners within the classroom and this study aims to understand those student who
bully and the reason behind why they do it because now a days numbers of concern
and student encountered bullying in many schools are rapidly increasing that’s why the
researcher wants to understand the effects of bullying in study habits and academic
performance of the learner.

Statement of The Problem:

1. What are the causes of bullying inside the classroom?

2. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intra personal relationship of the
learners?

3. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learners?

4. What possible solution that may suggested to avoid bullying?


Assumption
The researcher assumed that bullying has a significant effect to the interpersonal and
intrapersonal; study habits and academic performance of the learners

Methodology

In this study, the researcher used Qualitative research design because this is the
nature of social science research. Qualitative research design was developed in the
social science to enable researchers to study social, cultural, phenomena, observe
feelings, thoughts, behavior and beliefs of masses of society.

The researcher also used case study approach which was the most appropriate
method for this study in order to find out the effects of bullying to the academic
performance of the learners and to understand those students who bully and the
reasons behind why they do it. Case study research is am intensive analysis of an
individual unit (such as a person or community.) stressing development factors in
relation to environment.

Instrumentation

The main tool that was used in the gathering data for this research was researcher
made questionnaire

1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?


2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?
3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?
4. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learner?
5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?
Data Gathering

In gathering data, the researcher will conduct interview through the research made
questionnaire to the teachers who always sees and encounter the bullying cases inside
the classroom and the researcher also read some articles to support the gathered
information among the respondents
Respondent 1:
1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?

- Aim for competition his example is for academic excellence or other skill
performance like drawing sports activity in order to recognize their strength.
Second, is brotherhood or sisterhood or friendship pressure.

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?

- Seek attention, has to overcome his/her fear, wants podium to express their
selves and satisfy ego.

3. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learner?

- Bullying victims tend to be silent than persuasive to express how they feel.
Most of them chooses to be careful in speech and action, it affects their way
of connecting or communicating with others

4. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?
- Bullying victims tend to suffer anxiety, finds it difficult to socialize, has lack of
confidence, having trouble in pulling his/her self to study, and has doubt if can
develop his/her skills.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?

- Give emphasis in strengthening Christian values in and outside the


classroom, may create activities group and individual which promotes
personality development and corporate reward and punishment.
Respondent 2:
1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?

- Mental condition of the students, the difference of their attitude and behavior
to their classmate, seeking for approval to their classmate and teachers and
eagerness to achieve academic award.

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?

- Family problem, seeking for attention from parents, family and friends, lack of
love and care they and also experience being bullied

3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal


relationship of the learner?

- Interpersonal:
They are very shy and afraid to communicate

- Intrapersonal:
Low self-esteem
Low self-confidence
Depressed
Loneliness

4. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic


performance of the learner?

- I have one student from grade 7 who I know have the skills in speaking English.
However, she is not confident enough to speak in front of her classmates
because she is afraid of being laugh at and being tease. She is a good student,
but has a problem in anger management, that’s why she always shy, doesn’t
communicate much to her classmates, and has few friends. In result, she’s
always sitting at the back and often doesn’t do her projects.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?
- I think the parents must always be updated to the performance of their
children and they must intervene if needed. The student must be opened to
their emotions and trust their teachers and parents whenever they have
problems.

Respondent 3:
1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?

- teasing, name calling, putting someone down and threatening others

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?

- They don't get attention at home. This is the only way they know how to act.
(Maybe they have been pushed around and abused at home.)

3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?

- Bullying really affect the interpersonal and intrapersonal of the learners.


Intrapersonal within oneself on how the learner see himself if someone bully
him the learner may have the tendency of self-esteem. Interpersonal is on
how he interacts to other people when someone bully him the learner may
have the tendency not to interact to people and stay away from other people

learner?

- Student tend to have a lower academic performance, dislike of school and


less confidence in their academic abilities.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?

- Learn and Help train all adults and youth on how to recognize and respond to
bullying
Respondent 4:
1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?

- As for what I observed, one bullies a person when that person has a
disability, has insecurities, and is physically different from the others.

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?

- A student who bullies his or her classmate because they have this desire to
be dominant or to be above all. Sometimes they also feel insecure with the
person whom they are bullying.

3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?

- A student who is being bullied Sometimes it also leads a person not to trust
anybody around them since they are getting this paranoia that everyone is
talking or making fun of who they are.

4. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learner?

- It lowers the self-esteem of the learners in which it leads to reduce the


interest of the learner in performing well in his/her study.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?

- Be observant with your students and when you sensed that something is
different, immediately talk with the person being involved.
- Set standards or agreement that no one should bully their fellow.
- Make an activity in which it can unite student’s despite of their diversity.

Respondent 5:
1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?
- Feeling of pride and satisfying feeling when they hit or bully other students
- Peer pressure

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?

- Some of the reasons of bullies to bully other students are peer pressure,
problems at home like bullies are problematic or they feel inferior inside their
houses so they grab the opportunity to be superior to their fellow students
who's weaker than them. Also, we can't remove the fact that maybe bullies
are also a victim of bullying in some other places.

3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?

- Of course, bullying affects the emotional stability of the students they may feel
that they are not belong to the group
- the whole time he/she is with other people, he/she feels inferiority within her.
- unstable emotions
- can't focus to work/study because he/she is scared to be beaten by other
people.

4. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learner?

- Of course, their performance might tend to be lower than other students,


person who was bullied by other may also be shy, frighten and always
nervous when they see bullies around that leads them to get lower grades
and worse is depression.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?

- Strictly observe the school and classroom rules by the teacher.


- Equality inside the classroom
- Action immediately if someone is being bullied.
Result.

- Bullying inside the classroom has found greatly affect to the study habits and
academic performance or achievements of the learners. (Nahla Al-Ali and
Khulood Shattnawi) most of my respondent supported the great effects of
bullying to the academic performance state that bullying also affects the
physical, emotional, mental and psychosocial lives so the learners who bullied
found difficult to perform in academic activities they can’t focus to study they
are always feel that they are not belong to the group and they tend to be
silent than persuasive to express how they feel. Most of them chooses to be
careful in speech and action, it affects their way of connecting or
communicating with others. (Bullying101)

Discussion.

Based on the gathered, treated and analyze data from five (5) respondent of private
school Good Shepard Christian School the following SOP (Statement of The Problem)
of this study are answered

1. What are the common causes of bullying inside the classroom?


a. seeking for approval to their classmate and teachers.
b. aim for competition.
c. Peer pressure.
d. physically different from the others.

2. What are the reasons behind the student who bullies?


a. They don't get attention at home or family problem.
b. They also experience being bullied.
c. Pear pressure.

3. How does bullying affects the interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship of the
learner?

a. Victims of bullying tend to be silent than persuasive to express how they feel.
b. Victims of bullying affects their way of connecting or communicating with
others.
c. Victims of bullying affects the emotional stability of the students they may feel
that they are not belong to the group

4. How does bullying affects the study habits and academic performance of the
learner?

a. It lowers the self-esteem of the learners in which it leads to reduce the


interest of the learner in performing well in classroom activities.
b. Bullying victims tend to suffer anxiety and finds it difficult to socialize.
c. Has doubt if can develop his/her skills and they having trouble in pulling
his/her self to study.

5. What is the possible solution that may be suggested to avoid bullying inside the
classroom?

a. Classroom management or Set standards or agreement that no one should


bully their fellow.
b. Action immediately if someone is being bullied and encourage the student.
c. Create programs that promotes personality development and corporate
reward and punishment.

As the Researcher analyze the data gathering of the five (5) Respondent most of them
are strongly agree that bullying has a significant effect to the academic performance of
the learners.

Conclusion.

Bullying has a significant effect to the interpersonal, intrapersonal,


study habits and academic performance of the learners.
