INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Each of us has its strengths and weaknesses in different aspects in life. Strengths that make

us tougher and stronger each day and weaknesses that pulls us down if we don’t know how to

conquer and fight for it. In school, students had many kinds of difficulties that they encounter

every day in their different subjects specifically in Filipino. Students think that Filipino is the

easiest subject of all and they didn’t give enough effort and attention to it. They always think that

they can handle Filipino because they took up it when they are still in Elementary even in High

School and also they can take it in College. What is the one way to evaluate their knowledge

about this subject?

Evaluating student knowledge with a questionnaire has become one of the staples of teaching

in schools. In this way, we can test students comprehensive skills in their chosen course; how far

their learning and test their store knowledge. This is a process of giving students a series of

questions and encouraged them to answer it and if they answer it all, it gives them feedback and

appropriate score. Nowadays, in the ever-evolving technology, most of the teachers have adapted

to it and began instructing students to answer their quizzes either online or on their computers at

schools.

In line with this, the researchers conducted a study on how this interactive quiz can contribute

and help students in improving their learning skills and their capabilities to enhance their store

knowledge in Filipino as their chosen major course.

1
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to help the First Year BSED-Filipino students of Carlos Hilado Memorial

State College, Academe Year 2018-2019, to widen their knowledge about Filipino context.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages of the interactive Filipino quiz to the First Year BSED-Filipino

students?

2. How can the interactive quiz evaluate the student’s performance?

3. Is it a correct medium to use for the students evaluation?

Conceptual Framework

In this study, the learning and store knowledge of the First Year BSED-Filipino students

will enhanced and able to help in accordance with their performance in class, how they were able

to recall their lessons and analyze it briefly. The input served as the Power point Presentation

will presents a series of questions to be answered by the students. In the process, students will

choose their best answer based on their learning and store knowledge in their Filipino major and

in the output, the students know their final scores and the system will evaluate it.

To help visualize the conceptual framework, a schematic diagram is provided on the next

page.

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be beneficial to following:

STUDENTS. The result will provide the students with some knowledge on the technological

world and how it can greatly benefit in their way of learning. It can also help them in enhancing

their capabilities to recall their previous topics and able to be aware on technological instruction

materials. They can use it in their future studies as their guide in teaching to their future students.

TEACHERS. The result of this study will be benefited to the teachers by opening their minds

for the ever-evolving technological world. They will realize that involving the technology as

their basis and making an instructional tool in teaching can improved their skills and capabilities

in the students learning comprehensive skills.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The results of this study will be benefited to the future researcher

if they conduct a related study in line with this study as their basis and references.

4
Definition of Terms

To facilitate and promote clarity and common understanding between the researcher and the

readers the following terms were defined conceptually and operationally.

Interactive - Conceptually, it is acting with each other.

Operationally, this term refers to a type of quiz which you were able to be

knowledgeable to answer it.

Manifest – Conceptually, this is an evident to these senses, especially to the sight; apparent;

distinctly perceived.

Operationally, it is the way student’s performances became visible and able to

enhance their capabilities in class.

Power Point Presentation - Conceptually, it is a kind of technology that creates presentation

and slides.

Operationally, it is a technological presentation which we are able to make our

interactive quiz and how our program works.

Comprehensive –Conceptually, broadly or completely covering; including a large proportion of

something.

Operationally, it is a way how students think and how wide their knowledge is.

5
Scope and Delimitation

This study aimed to determine the knowledge of First Year BSED-Filipino students of

Carlos Hilado Memorial State College Academe Year 2018-2019 in the Interactive quiz in

accordance with the subject Filipino sa Iba’t-ibang Disiplina. This is also been related to the

capacity teaching of the teachers on how they were able to test students comprehensive skills in

class and how their lessons be effective in students performances.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Student Performance in Online Quizzes as a Function of Time

Smith and Rupp (2004) report that 80 percent of their student sample consider themselves to be

either intermediate or advanced computer users. Descriptions of usage of various technology

(hardware, software, etc.) in the classroom are ample in recent years. Edling (2000) and Webb

(2001) provide two examples of how technology can enhance the classroom environment.

Possibly as a result of developing student skills in managing technological aids in the classroom,

there is some evidence that traditional and web-assisted methods of teaching produce no

different results, at least in terms of student grades (see, for example, Priluck [2004] and Dellana,

Collins, and West [2000]), which may leave web-assisted or even online courses as cost-

effective alternatives to the traditional methods of teaching. Nevertheless, Serwatka (2003)

points out that subjective testing is problematic in an on-line setting, partly because it is difficult

to identify who is taking the test. Research also indicates that seating in particularly large classes

affects student grades. Benedict and Hoag (2004) find that students who sit in the back have a 23

percent increased probability of receiving Ds or Fs. Online courses do not face this issue and

web-assisted courses may mitigate this issue, although it remains unclear whether information is

lost without face-to-face communication between instructor and student. Given the continued

research into web-assisted and online courses, continued research into the effects of web-assisted

learning on student outcomes is therefore important and necessary. Whether students learn

equally well in a web-assisted course undoubtedly affects course and program outcomes, a

criterion that has received great attention from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of

Business (AACSB) 7
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the time remaining to

complete online quizzes and the quiz score for six sections of Financial Management Courses at

The University of North Florida. Given the increased focus of web-assisted learning in academia

and the focus on outcomes by the AACSB, such an investigation is warranted. However, an

investigation of web-assisted testing methods is also important because it may gain insight into

whether students retain and apply knowledge, whether students budget their time more

effectively as the semester progresses, and whether anxiety is reduced or eliminated as additional

online quizzes are taken. These factors are discussed below. The nature of the Financial

Management course is highly cumulative, and it is important to investigate whether students

retain and apply the knowledge learned throughout the semester and whether a web-assisted

testing approach is sufficiently student-centered to be used in introductory finance courses in

order to satisfy AACSB expectations and requirements. Recent studies, such as the ones by

Taylor et al (2004) and Doyle and Wood (2005) point out that the AACSB has increased its

focus on student outcomes and a student-centered approach. If students retain the knowledge

learned early in the semester and demonstrate that knowledge through online quiz performance

throughout the semester, then web-assisted testing may be a viable alternative to classroom

testing.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Technological teaching and assessment aids such as the Blackboard System have become

commonplace in academia. Students these days are capable of using the Web to obtain learning

materials and to complete tasks for a given course (Journal of Instructional Pedagogies). The

researcher created an offline entertainment program about Interactive Filipino quiz to be

benefited by the BSED-Filipino students and also Filipino major teachers. The purpose of this

program; an interactive Filipino quiz, to offer ideas to teachers in creating this kind of

technological instruction materials to at least give an entertainment and fun to start up a class and

to help students to widen their knowledge and enhanced their capabilities in their chosen field of

studies.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers chose First Year BSED-Filipino students of Carlos Hilado Memorial State

College as their respondents.
