LITERATURE REVIEW
 A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, within a certain time
period.
 Literature review surveys scholarly articles, books and other resources (e.g. dissertations,
conference proceedings) relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a
description, summary and critical evaluation of each work. The purpose is to offer an overview of
significant literature published on a topic.
 A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an organizational
pattern and combines both summary and synthesis.
 A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a reorganization,
or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new
with old interpretations.

RELATED LITERATURE
Consists of articles and books written by previous authorities giving theories, ideas, opinions
and experiences of what is good and bad, the desirable and undesirable within the research
problem

RELATED STUDIES
Published reports on researches, and unpublished manuscripts such as theses or actual
research studies done previously on the topic.

WRITING THE REVIEW

1. Text should be brief. Avoid direct quotation.
2. Have a plan on how you are to present the review.
3. Emphasize relatedness.
4. Don’t reproduce the literature. Critical review, not mere enumeration of information.

ADDITIONAL REMINDERS
1. Locate and use only credible sources: 20 sources total, including newspaper articles, encyclopedia
entries, journal articles, credible websites, books, 1-2 interviews, 1 survey
2. Make sure that your research questions align with your thesis sentence
3. Eliminate bias in your writing and portrayal of the information you gather from the sources. Eliminate
use of personal pronouns, including first, second, and third person, such as “I,” “Me,” “My,” We,” “Our,”
“You,” etc.
4. DO NOT make an argument in the literature review. The main purpose is to REVIEW the various
perspectives in the sources you locate and use
 5. Make sure you use quotations or paraphrase information from your sources in order to support your
claims and to show various perspectives on your research questions and thesis sentence

School papers serve different functions to the school and society. The school paper has different functions
which evolved throughout the years. Among these functions are the following: Information function, Opinion
function, Education function, Laboratory function and Watchdog function (Cruz, 1997). These functions are
always true to the modern school publications and it is very evident that school publication is an indispensable
component of a school because of its many purposes.

TITLE OF THE RESEARCH BEING CITED: Towards Enhancing the Campus Journalism Program in Selected
Public Elementary Schools in District V Manila.

A descriptive method of research by Aquino (2013) was conducted in selected public elementary
schools in District V Manila to determine and describe the current administrative, technical and logistic
problems encountered by the school paper advisers. The findings of study revealed that both school
paper adviser and pupil-staffers encounter administrative, technical and logistical problems in the
implementation of campus journalism program ranging from the lack of funds, inadequacy of facilities,
equipment, books, and to shortage of time allotted to journalism classes. The study also further
revealed that some teachers lack understanding and cooperation in the implementation of campus
journalism program, which refused to allow staffers to work on the school paper. Also, too much
curricular activities and hectic schedule of other school activities contributed to the problems on the
performing the task on school papering.

and online research journals.
 Select only the highlights or the parts related to your study such as the respondents, variables that are

 Use in text citation and indicate too your reference by making your reference citation.
 Select related studies which were published from 2009 up to present only.
 Remember to take note the similarities and differences between the studies that you have reviewed
and your present study such as similarities in variables, respondents, findings, etc.
