Advanced Geotechnical Engineering (CE631A) – 2019-20 Semester 1
Assignment 3
1. In an oedometer test a specimen of saturated clay 19 mm thick reaches (55+x)%
consolidation in 20 min. How long would it take a layer of this clay 5 m thick to reach the
same degree of consolidation under the same stress and drainage conditions? How long
would it take the layer to reach 30% consolidation? x is the last digit of your roll number.
2. Water is pumped from an aquifer, as shown in Figure 1, for domestic use. The original
groundwater level was at the top of the soft clay and dropped by 5+x m. The ground
surface subsided. Water pressure in the aquifer is guided by the location of groundwater
level. Specific gravity of the clay layer is 2.7. x is the last digit of your roll number.
(a) Assuming that the subsidence is due to the settlement of the soft clay, estimate the
settlement of the ground surface.
(b) A decision was made to recharge the aquifer by pumping water from a canal. If the
groundwater level were to return to its original level, would the ground surface return to
its original elevation? If so, why? If not, why not? Show calculations to support your
answer. How much recovery (expansion of soil) is possible using the one dimensional
consolidation theory?
(c) Draw stress path of the of a soil element located centre of the clay layer during the
entire process of pumping and recharge.

3. At a depth of (3+x/4) m in a clay deposit, the overconsolidation ratio is 3.0. Plot the
variation of overconsolidation ratio and water content with depth for this deposit up to a
depth of 15 m. The recompression index is Cr = 0.05, and the water content at 4 m is
32%. The groundwater level is at the ground surface. Specific gravity of the clay is 2.7. x
is the last digit of your roll number.
4. Based on one-dimensional consolidation test results on a clay, the coefficient of
consolidation for a given pressure range was obtained as 8× 10−3 mm2/s. In the field
there is a 2-m-thick layer of the same clay with two-way drainage. Based on the assumption
that a uniform surcharge of 70kN/m2 was to be applied instantaneously, the total
consolidation settlement was estimated to be 150mm. However, during the construction,
the surcharge was gradually increased in (55+x) days. Estimate the settlement at t = 30 and
120 days.
5. A saturated clay layer of 7.5 m is subjected to the vertical loading distribution tabulated
below.
Depth (m) 0.00 1.5 3.0 4.5 6.0 7.5
∆𝜎 (kPa) 200.0 145.45 114.28 94.11 80.00 69.56
The clay layer is resting on an impermeable rock, but the upper boundary has free draining
conditions. Using finite difference method obtain the values of excess pore water pressures
at the end of each month during one year of consolidation. Calculate the average degree
of consolidation after one year. Based on one-dimensional consolidation test results on a
clay, the coefficient of consolidation for a given pressure range was obtained as (1.8+x/10)
m2/year.
