ROMANIAN WEDDING
What is the “perfect wedding”? There are countless wedding planning
kits out there complete with a checklist to help guide couples through the
process with different cultural/religious traditions that might be important to
the couple.
Many brides and grooms would love to marry in the tradition of their
ancestors or at least introduce elements of a traditional wedding ceremony or
reception from their cultural backgrounds like traditional wedding
decorations, wedding supplies and other visual elements, traditional meal (like
sake for a Japanese reception or chai instead of coffee for an Indian wedding),
Music and entertainment are easy areas to help set the mood.
Weddings are one of the most universal traditions, but every culture
celebrates them a little differently. Each culture has its own ways of making
someone's special day extra special. While throwing the bouquet, cutting the
cake, white wedding gowns, well-thought decor, tuxedoes, limousines, great
food, and guests in great outfits may seem like a wedding staple in most
Western places, other cultures have drastically different ways to go about
celebrating the big day.

Romanian Wedding Superstition
Romania is the land where superstition and faith are dating and living together
in harmony. It is a place with lots of contradictions, funny expressions, unique ways
of celebrating the seasons and with a fascinating mythology and some of the most
amazing legends and funniest Romanian superstitions. Here are some Romanian
superstitions for the wedding day (Transylwedding, 2015) :
1. Rain on the wedding day means luck in marriage
2. The bride should cry before the wedding so she would be happy in
her marriage
3. It’s a good sign if a relative sneezes before the ceremony
4. On the wedding day, no woman should stay between the bride and
the mirror. If this happens, it means that the other woman could
steal the groom’s heart
5. A spider found in the creases of the dress means good luck
6. To drop the wedding rings means death
7. No weddings are allowed in feasting time
8. It’s a sign of bad luck to see another bride on the wedding day. So
brides and their families go to great lengths to avoid seeing each
other when signing the marriage certificates at the City Hall or
when waiting for their queu at the church.
Romanian Wedding Gastronomy
A tradional Romanian wedding has a menu of four dishes plus dessert (Cardelean,
2017) :
1. Appetiser (cheese, bacon, eggplant, salad, tomatoes, sausages, meatballs).
2. Fish (in regions where they don’t organize the wedding at night, fish can be
serve with sour soup).
3. Modavian stuffed cabbage rolls (a traditional dish), usually with warm
polenta, sour cream and chilli peppers.
2
4. Steak (pork or beef).
5. Dessert – a traditional dessert is the Romanian sponge cake (cozonac), other
sweets, fruits, and the wedding cake (usually at the end). At the bride’s house,
guest could be served with the traditional braided wedding bread and in some
regions with jam. They drink wine and plum brandy (a traditional strong
alcoholic drink called “tuica”). Other spirits that are produced from other fruit
or from a cereal grain are called “raichu”.

Romanian Wedding Decorations
Traditional decorative elements, authentic Romanian interiros are decorated
with woven colorful textiles, having floral or animal motifs that differ in shape
depending on the region. Other elements used traditionally were pottery and wooden
objects (such as spoons and the dowry chest). Nowadays, apart from floral
decorations, there is custom of choosing wedding favours (small boxes or bags with
candies) which are the young couple’s gifts to the guest. They usually contain five
candies wrapped in marzipan or caramelized sugar, symbolizing health, happiness,
fertility, long life and abundance. These small gifts can be given to the guests in
church or at the restaurant, by placing them on the table for each person separetly.

Romanian Wedding Dance and Music
Generally, a big modern wedding will have a band that will play all night,
international music, traditional Romanian music, and some wedding specific music.
For a small wedding a DJ is also accepted. The new couple meets the guests at the
entrance and they serve a glass of champagne and some sweets while the musician
sing the Meeting March (“Mars de intampinare”). They wish the bride and groom
“Casa de Piatra” (Stone house) which symbolizes a solid marriage. After all the
guests have arrived, the bride and the groom start the wedding reception with a
special soang, usually a waltz. Later on, the main chef performs the traditional
chicken dance (“Dansul gainii”): a roasted chicken is decorated and put on a platter.
5
The chef dances with it in front of the newlyweds and the godparents and it continues
until the godfather pays the person holding the chicken (Alanandlavi, 2014).
