Unit 30: Project on Sustainability
Scenario
You have decided to work as a ‘local groups volunteer’ for the charity known as WaterAid to
gain experience in working for an organisation and to support WaterAid in its efforts to bring
safe water and sanitation to everyone in the world. You have completed your induction and
internet training.
Your task is to fundraise in local schools and colleges, and in the local community using
WaterAid resources. You have also been given the name of a contact in the local water
company who will support your efforts to fundraise by providing you with materials and giving
presentations when required.
You have decided to set up groups in the schools and college and discuss the types of
fundraising that they could carry out using the WaterAid support materials. These include
setting up groups to fundraise through:
a quiz night
walk for water
dance for water or
sing for water.
As a volunteer you need to keep a log of what you are achieving to discuss at your monthly one
to one meetings. This will contribute to your report and recommendations to WaterAid.

Sustainability Project
WaterAid's vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and
sanitation. Their mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe
water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities. They work
with local partners and influence decision-makers to maximise their impact.
This ensures that communities can sustain their projects after WaterAid ends
its support, with possibilities to extend or replicate their projects in the future.
Your WaterAid sustainability project must be related to one or more of the eight
sustainability-themed gateways:

Food and Drink

Centres need to be vigilant to ensure that learners are able to differentiate between
reputable and biased information (biased information may be circulated by groups
with a vested interest, such as companies advertising so-called ‘greenwash’, or
pressure groups wishing to gain publicity or increase donations). Learners can find it
difficult to determine where vested interests lie, and are likely to need guidance. It
may be possible for tutors to assess and review research before learners undertake any
further work, to ensure that they have not been misled by biased information.
