Mrs. Monica Wieneke Text: Algebra 1 Common Core by Pearson
[email protected]Materials: Pencils and Erasers, 1” or 2” binder filled with loose-leaf paper, colored
pencils/pens and highlighters, and Scientific Calculator (TI-30XIIS recommended)
You must have all of your supplies with you every day! I will not allow students to go to
their lockers for forgotten supplies.
I will enforce the tardy policy very strictly. I expect you to be in your seat with all of your
supplies when the bell rings.
Course Overview: Students apply knowledge of numerical and algebraic properties, solve
and graph linear equations and inequalities using the real number system, solve systems
of linear equations and inequalities, apply exponential relationships, and solve quadratic
and rational equations. Students solve real-world problems and represent their work using
graphs, symbols, words and technology using appropriate mathematical terminology
Course Topics:
• Semester 1: Expressions, Solving Equations & Inequalities, Linear Functions,
Systems of Equations & Inequalities
• Semester 2: Exponents & Exponential Functions, Polynomials and Factoring,
Quadratic Functions & Equations, Radical Expressions & Equations, Data Analysis &
Probability
Quarter Grades will be calculated by total points. Chapter tests will account for roughly
70% of the final quarter grade
Semester Grades will be determined by the district issued chart. You must pass two of
three (Quarters and Exam) to pass the course and receive credit toward graduation.
Tests: A summative assessment will be given at the conclusion of each chapter. Some of
the longer chapters will be split into two separate tests. The tentative date of the test is
announced within the first few days of starting the new chapter. It is your responsibility to
use all of the class activities, homework, and outside help, if needed, to prepare for the test
throughout the chapter. A test review will be provided for each test. The test review is
collected for a grade on the day of the test.
Homework: Practice is a major part of any Algebra class and that means homework. This
is how you test yourself on that day’s content and know what questions you still have.
Class notes should be used to assist the assignments. I will check homework for completion
grade and assign 2, 1, or 0 points. Each homework assignment should be completed on a
new page of your notebook, labeled with the page number(s), and problem numbers of the
assignment at the top. All problems should be numbered with the original problem re-
written, all work shown, and final answers circled.
Quizzes: Quizzes of varying length will be given throughout the chapter. Point value of a
quiz will depend on the length.
Binders: Every student will keep a binder for Algebra 135. Its contents and organization
will be checked for a grade at the conclusion of each chapter. If a binder is lost or damaged,
see me immediately to discuss repair or replacement options.
ABSENCES: It is the Student’s Responsibility to get all missing work if absent. Excused
absences allow for work to be completed in the same number of days of the absence. If you
are absent, it is your responsibility to get the missing notes and homework, complete it,
and turn it in. All homework assignments for the week are posted on the chalkboard in the
back of the classroom, on my website on the class calendar, and on the intranet under
lesson plans. If the assignment is a worksheet, it will be linked on the class calendar and a
paper copy will be available upon your return.
***If you are absent the day of a test, you should be prepared to take the test the day
you return. If you are absent on the review day prior to the test, you are expected to
take the test as scheduled. The review will be posted on my website calendar as well
as in the grade book.***
Unexcused absences result in a zero for any assignment, quiz, or test given on the day of
the absence per SHS policy.
Behavior Expectations: Follow all expectations of Be Refined, Be Respectful and Be
Responsible.
I expect excellent behavior from you. If there are any problems I will handle them in a
variety of ways, including: verbal warnings, parent contact, classroom detention, or
referral to the discipline office.
What if I need help?
E-mail me! Send me an e-mail in the evening when you are stuck on your homework. Ask
a question and I can give you some guidance.
At School Tutoring Availability:
• During Lunch: Every day during lunch (both shifts) WITH ME in room 124.
• After School: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in room 160 from 3:30 until 4:30.
When in doubt, ASK! High school is a whole new ball game and
most need some help to get adjusted and be successful. I am
looking forward to a GREAT YEAR!
