EXERCISE 7 (Two IEDs per Student Group)
Task
Purpose of this exercise is to learn and understand the monitoring possibilities available in
PCM 600:
- Disturbance Handling and Scheduler
- Signal Monitoring
- Event Viewer
Procedure (Overview)
- Add the disturbance recorder function in the TX and RX IEDs
- Inject faults and analyze the disturbance viewer. Open the disturbance file with a
third part COMTRADE file viewer.
- Use on line monitoring to verify the correct measurements and signals of the
function blocks
- Use event viewer to monitor the relay behaviour without need of reading
disturbance files
- Start the SCHEDULER to automatically fetch the disturbance files from the 2 IEDs

Procedure (Detailed)
1. Application configuration for TX and RX IEDs
You need to add the disturbance recorder function block in the application configuration.
Start CAP 531 for the “TX” IED and add the following configuration for the analog
signals of the disturbance recorder (zoomed in the next pictures for readability):

2. Setting the Disturbance Recorder in “TX” and “RX” IEDs.
Open PST for “TX IED” at Disturbance report level and read the names of the signals,
that have been downloaded from CAP 531:

Exit from PST from the “TX IED”.
Open PST for the “RX IED”, do the same settings as for “TX IED”. You can do
copy/paste from inside PST, by opening PST for the two IEDs (in the same way you
have done it when you copied group1 into group2).
Additionally you need to define the setting for the GOOSE TRIP RECEIVED SIGNAL:
write the settings into “RX IED”:
Exit from PST.

3. Inject a fault in “TX” IED:
verify that the YELLOW LED IS ON in both IEDs and that also the RED LED is ON.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THOSE LEDs HAVE BEEN ACTIVATED!

else, or you want to save it into your hard disk for further analysis). Export is in

Open Disturbance Handling for the “RX IED” and upload the disturbance from it (the RX
IED has generated one disturbance because of the trip via GOOSE message that has
triggered the disturbance recorder). Browse through the file and search for the received
GOOSE TRIP signal:
Exit from disturbance handling tool for both IEDs.
5. Activation of the automatic disturbance uploading (Scheduler).
With the test set generate several disturbances causing trip in the “TX IED”.

Inject some other faults causing earth fault relay to trip. Wait for a while (some minutes)
and then open the Disturbance Handling Tool (JUST OPEN IT!) for both IEDs to verify that
disturbances are already “in the PC”:
Delete all disturbances in both IEDs and in PCM 600, from the Disturbance Handling
Tool.
Close PCM 600.
Inject some other disturbances from test set,
Wait some minutes and then open PCM 600. Open the Disturbance Handling for both
IEDs. Verify that the Scheduler have uploaded the disturbances even when PCM 600 was
closed (the scheduler is a Windows task).

7. Event viewer.
The main idea for the event viewer is to be able to record some events without needing to
trigger the disturbance recorder.
The event viewer has to do, anyway, with the disturbance recorder:
- only signals connected to disturbance recorder will be recorded in the event viewer.
- the disturbance recorder must be set on, otherwise the event viewer does not work.
To verify that the event viewer records the signals WITHOUT that disturbance recorder is
triggered, remove from PST all the trigger signals to disturbance recorder, for “TX IED”:

write settings in the “TX IED”.
Reset the LEDs in the front HMI. Generate an earth-fault trip (or just open/close your
object) and verify that YELLOW LED does not turn on.
