TITLE: Past is Past!

I. INTRODUCTION
ACTIVITY: Tell me a STORY!
1. The teacher posts the quotations and the students share their story about their experiences
in life.

“I am THANKFUL for the difficult people “The people who are giving up easily are
in my life, because they have shown me who those people who will NOT attain
I don’t want to be. SUCCESS.”

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:
1. To whom you were very thankful?
2. What have you realized on this quotations?
3. How can you encourage your classmates and friends to see the value of their life?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How does a participle and participial phrases improve a sentence?

II. INTERACTION
ACTIVITY: Let’s go deeper!
2. The teacher discusses the definition and give some examples of Participle, including its
steps in finding the verb participles.

What is a PARTICIPLE?
 A verb form that is used an ADJECTIVE.

PRESENT PAST
-ing -ed, d, en, t

 It can be found at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence (but they must be relatively
close to the noun or pronoun they modify)
 Participles are ONE WORD.
 Participial phrases consist of that one word plus modifiers (all that refer to that participle)
 It comes in two forms: PRESENT and PAST.

STEPS in finding the participle or participial phrase:


1. Find the subject.
2. Find the real verb.
3. Look for the other words that look like verbs (word endings are the clue)

EXAMPLES:
1. The marine biologist, diving near a reef, saw a shark.
 diving is the participle
 near the reef is the modifier
 This phrase describes the biologist.
 Subject and real verb: biologist saw

2. Known for her patience, Mrs. Williams was his favorite teacher.
 known is the participle
 for her patience is the modifier
 This phrase describes Mrs. Williams
 Subject and real verb: Mrs. Williams was

3. Let the students observe on the given quotations and ask them to identify the past and
present participles.

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:
1. What is the role of the verb in this lesson?
2. How would you determine if the verb is a present and past?

A participle and participial phrase improves the descriptive quality of a sentence and identifies
whether the actions or descriptions are used in a past or present.
