CE Homework 4

This homework assignment involves selecting and checking reinforcing steel for various reinforced concrete beams. Problem 1 has 3 parts involving selecting steel for beams with different parameters and loadings and checking the steel satisfies requirements. Problem 2 involves 3 beam configurations and calculating their moment capacities to analyze adding compression steel. Problem 3 calculates the effective flange width and moment capacity of a T-beam. Problems 4 and 5 similarly involve calculating moment capacities and checking steel requirements for additional T-beams and a non-rectangular beam.

CE 4420– Reinforced Concrete Design

Fall 2019 - Homework Assignment #4

Due date: October 23, 2019
Problem 1:
1. Select the reinforcing steel for a beam with the following parameters:

b= 14” simply supported – span length 30 ft.

h= 28“ Uniformly dist. live load – wL = 1.2 k/ft
Concentrated DL at mid-span PD = 3 kips
Concrete = 150 lb/ft3 Assume 1 ½” clear cover,
f’c = 6000 psi #3 stirrup,
fy = 60,000 psi 1” clear between layers of bars

Show your checks of As> As min, εt, and placement of reinforcing steel.

2. Select b, d, h and the reinforcing steel for a 36 ft. simply supported rectangular
beam, which supports its own dead load plus a uniform live load of 1.8 kips per
foot and an additional uniform dead load of 0.4 kips per foot. . Use f’c = 4000 psi
and fy = 60,000 psi. Check reinforcing steel placement using 1 ½” clear cover and
#3 stirrup.
3. Select b, d, h and the reinforcing steel for a 24-ft-span simply supported
rectangular beam which supports its own dead load plus a superimposed service
dead load of 1.0 kips/ft plus a service live load of which consists of two
concentrated loads of 12 kips each located at the third points of the span. Use f’c=
3000 psi and fy=60,000 psi. Check reinforcing steel placement using 1 ½” clear
cover and #4 stirrup.

Problem 2:
For the following three beams, compute Mn. Use f’c = 5000psi and
fy = 60,000psi. Check εt and determine  factor. Based on the results, comment on
whether adding compression steel is an effective way to increase moment capacity
(compare increase in steel to increase in moment capacity).

Problem 3:
For the following beam-slab layout, determine the effective flange width for the cross-
hatched T-beam. Calculate Mn for the beam with f’c = 4000psi and fy=60000psi. Check
t, determine the  factor and check As > Asmin. You may assume that there is 1 inch clear
spacing between the layers.
