Philippine Inventions

• Karaoke Machine (invented by Robert del Rosario)

Karaoke machine was invented in 1975 by Roberto del Rosario. I really thought this was a
Japanese invention, despite its’ popularity here, and I was completely wrong. A brilliant guy,
he invented many other musical devices, but Karaoke will always be remembered as his
greatest triumph (or bane to humankind, depending on your point of view.)
Roberto del Rosario (1919–2003) was the president of the now-defunct Trebel Music
Corporation, a founding member of the Filipino amateur jazz band "The Executives Band
Combo," and, in 1975, the inventor of the Karaoke Sing Along System. Known as "Bert," del
Rosario patented more than 20 inventions during his lifetime, making him one of the most
prolific of Filipino inventors.

• Video Phone (inetnved by Gregorio Y. Zara)

Invented by Gregorio Zara, in 1955 no less! When James Bond was using one in Dr. No, it
had already been in existence a number of years. This is the predecessor of the camera in
your mobile. National Scientist Gregorio Y. Zara, a physicist, invented a device that makes it
possible for two people to see each other on a television while talking on the telephone as
early as 1954. NAST is an advisory body in the Philippine government that deals with science
and technology. One of its mandates is to recognize outstanding achievements by Filipinos in
science and technology. (reference: http://www.visiontimes.com/2016/04/04/meet-the-filipino-

• Quink Ink (invented by: Fransisco Quisumbing)

an innovative ink at that time and was further developed to work with Parker Pens. Aside from
being quick drying, it was also water-resistant, did not clog the pen opening, does not blot and
will not fade. It is considered one of the best selling ink for fountain pens of the millennium.
