Where was the origin of Buddhism, what are its beliefs, and how did it affect ancient
India?

Buddhism:
-Religion that originated in India; in the 4th century
-Founded by a man named Siddhartha Gautama
-Meditation: the practice of sitting quietly and clearing mind of thoughts
-At this point, he became known as the “Buddha” or “enlightened one”
-Believed people could break the cycle of reincarnation by living good and pure lives
-Two major differences in Buddhism: 1) do not believe in a God; 2) did away with the
caste system

Four Noble Truths:


1-There is suffering
2-Suffering has an origin
3-Suffering can cease
4-There is a path out of suffering

Eightfold Path
-Symbolized by a wheel with 8 spokes; Also called “The Wheel of Life”
-Each spoke on the wheel represents a step towards achieving “nirvana”
-Nirvana: highest state of the human mind, free from ignorance and desires

Eightfold Path
1-Know the truth
2-Say nothing to hurt others
3-Practice Meditation
4-Control you thoughts
5-Resist evil
6-Free your mind of evil
7-Work for the good of others
8-Respect Life

Holy Text Book: Tripitaka is the sacred book

Worhsip:
-Buddhist worship at home in a shrine
-Buddhas worship is called “puja”
-People chant to show there love for Buddha
-Stupas: community building for worship, were solid domes

Gandhi: ideas guided Mohandes Gandhi who used “nonviolence” to help free India
from British rule
