Reflection Paper - Business Analytics

The document discusses how technology companies like Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft have become the world's most valuable companies. It notes that artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotic process automation, and cloud computing are disrupting many industries like banking, manufacturing, and transportation. The International Labor Organization reported that 56% of jobs in Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are at risk of being displaced by technology in the coming decades. While some jobs like food preparation are highly automatable, other roles like teaching are less so. The widespread adoption of robots and AI could eliminate 800 million jobs by 2030 according to some estimates.

Based in the presentation that we had by Asian Institute of Artificial Intelligence, the

world’s most valuable companies are now “Technology Companies” like Apple, Google,

Facebook & Microsoft. I have to agree with that statement because I also noticed that it is really

true, technology is really evolving while companies are continuously innovating their market

strategies. AI, Blockchain, RPA, Cloud are already encroaching and disrupting the BDO, Banking,

Energy, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Capital Markets, Health, Construction, Retail &

Transportation spaces. AI, Blockchain, RPA & Cloud are advancing beyond the acceptable limits

and therefore the other industries are being left behind. There was a report from The International

Labor Organization (ILO) that “robots threaten millions of jobs in Southeast Asia”. They added,

“about 56 percent of all salaried employment in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand

and Vietnam is at risk of displacement due to technology in the next couple of decades”. When I

heard this, I was immediately got scared of what that can do in our country. I cannot imagine

replacing the Filipino workers to robots. Imagine a world wherein everything is manage by them?

ILO recommended that workforces in the ASEAN should be trained in skills that will allow them

to adopt to diverse working environments and handle new technologies to work alongside

digitalized machines. They have showed as a graph that represents the “Automation risk by job

type” meaning analytics of the jobs that can be replace by robots and/or technology. Out of all the

jobs that were presented, “Food Preparation” was the highest. While “Teaching” got the lowest

rate. According to BBC News,”Robot automation will take 800 million jobs by 2030.” The U.S.

army chief wants robots and artificial intelligence forces to play bigger role on the battlefield. AI

would also mean ¨losing, disrupting, displacing 1.3 Million jobs in the PH BPO industry alone.¨

Olivia Oran of Thomson Reuters added ¨The rich and powerful warm robots are coming for your

jobs.¨ Ivana Kottasova of CNN Money also seems to have the same vision, ¨Smart robots could

soon steal your jobs.¨ On the other side the Blockchain expertise captured the No. 1 position on the

latest skills index by Upwork for being the hottest in the U.S. job market. Having these information

makes me wonder if I am a believer of this idea of replacing the manual production of humans to

intelligence of robots.
