ABBREVIATIONS

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION commandant1818

General

1. Over the years in our day to day working,

abbreviations have become part of military writing. There are,
however, so many military abbreviations that military writing
has become complicated. There is also a need to incorporate
new abbreviations keeping in tune with the advances in high
technology/weaponry. In this revised edition an attempt has
been made to update the abbreviations. A large number of
abbreviations which were found to be of marginal utility have
been deleted to reduce confusion and to make the pamphlet
easier to handle and refer to.

2. Abbreviations are a means of saving time. They are

intended to be a help and not a hindrance. Consistency is,
therefore, a pre-requisite. The use of abbreviations should be
confined to those that are officially recognised and are
contained in this Appendix.

3. Subject to general provisions contained in Joint

Services Staff Duties Manual Volume I - Service Writing,
abbreviations may be used, where permitted, in all types of
service writing including titles and centre headings. The use
of abbreviations is authorised in correspondence between
command headquarters and lower headquarters of static or
field formations except in documents meant for civil officials

including `defence civilians' or documents dealing with legal

or financial matters. Further, abbreviations are not to be used
within Army Headquarters and in correspondence addressed
to or endorsed to Army Headquarters. However, while
addressing letters to Army Headquarters abbreviations can be
used indicating the particular section of a Branch. While
writing to the other Services, use of abbreviations will be
restricted to those officially promulgated in `Joint Services
Staff Duties Manual Volume II Abbreviations (Revised -
Mar 2005).

Unauthorised Abbreviations

4. All abbreviations except those included in this

Appendix and Appendix `D' to Staff Duties in the Field and
their derivations and those universally accepted, are
unauthorised abbreviations. Unauthorised abbreviations will
normally not be used. However, if for some reasons it is
considered helpful or desirable to use an unauthorised
abbreviation, it must be explained or defined, the first time it
occurs in the text; for example Simplified Fire Control System
(SFCS). This applies particularly to technical corps and other
units whose specialised abbreviations are not necessary to be
authorised for general use.

Use of Capital Letters in Abbreviations

5. Rules for use of capital letters in relation to

abbreviations are as follows:-

(a) Abbreviations which consist of a condensation

of full words will be written with initial capitals when
particularising and with small initial letters, when
generalising, eg 4 Inf Bde or four inf bdes.

(b) Capital letters are used for every letter of the

following:-

(i) Titles of documents.

(ii) Centre headings.

(iii) Reference letters of appendices.

(iv) Code words, nicknames, link signs,
code signs and abbreviated names of
regiments and corps (as authorised).

(v) Precedences.

(vi) Security classifications.

(vii) Abbreviations composed of initial letters
of words or acronyms, eg, OR, COAS and JTC.

(viii) Following words in orders and

instructions:-

(aa) LEFT and RIGHT when

indicating directions.

(ab) NO and NOT.

(c) Initial Capitals. Apart from the opening word

of a sentence, capital letters are used for the first letter
of the following:-

(i) Important words in all headings other

than titles, centre headings and titles of the
references and attachments where listed.

(ii) The opening words of sub-paragraphs,

sub-sub-paragraphs and sub-sub-sub-
paragraphs.

(iii) Important words in titles of charts,

sections, documents, manuals, regulations and
publications when these are listed or quoted.

(iv) Abbreviations for all ‘ ranks' are to be

written with initial capitals irrespective of the
context.

Plurals

6. The following rules apply:-

(a) In abbreviations consisting of initial letters of a

group of words, addition of letter ‘ s' against
appropriate letter will indicate plurality. This letter will
however never be used as a capital letter. For
example, GOsC, ‘ 2sIC' and ‘ TEsWT'.

(b) In abbreviations which are condensations of

full words, addition of letter ‘
s' at the end will indicate
plurality eg, ‘
tps' and ‘
btys'.

(c) Letter ‘s' will not be added to abbreviations

which are capable of both singular and plural meaning
according to the context or are incapable of plurality
eg, ‘
HQ', ‘
res', ‘
OR', ‘hr', ‘
rfn', ‘
PW' and ‘
ft'.

(d) When abbreviations are used in the

possessive plural, no apostrophe need be inserted;
instead, the addition of the small alphabet ‘ s' at the
end of the abbreviation will suffice to indicate the
precise meaning within the context of the sentence, eg,
COs and not CO's.

Punctuation

7. Full stops will not be used in or after abbreviations.

Text of a document will follow the normal rules of
punctuations; eg, ‘
Evac, according to the cas gp, is illustrated
in Appendix 'A'.

Verbs

8. Except where specifically authorized in Section 2, the

present participles of verbs will not be abbreviated. This is to
avoid the possibility of confusion arising if one abbreviation
was to indicate both action in progress and action completed

as for example, if ‘reorg' were to stand both for ‘

reorganised'
and ‘reorganising'.

corps as a whole. Abbreviations given in Chapter 3, viz,
‘arty', ‘
engrs' and ‘sigs' refer to these arms or corps in
their functional aspects.

3. Abbreviated titles of Mechanised Infantry

Regiments will be as under:-

(a) Regiments Converted from Old Infantry

Battalions. Abbreviated title will consist of the
regiment number in front of the abbreviated
regimental title. Abbreviated title of the old
infantry battalion will also be put in bracket eg:-
