Chemistry Calculation

This science intervention material provides a lesson on concentration of solutions measured by percent volume of solute and percent volume of solvent. It defines key terms, provides example calculations, and includes practice problems for students. The document aims to help students understand and be able to calculate concentrations of mixtures according to given information on volumes of solutes and solvents.

Name: _________________________________ Date: _______________________

Grade and Section: _________________________________ Activity No.:___________________
Subject Teacher: Hanie A. Mangubat Quarter: First

Topic: Concentration of Solutions (Percent by volume of solute and percent by volume of solvent)
Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of some important properties of
solutions.
Performance Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of preparing different
concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of materials.
Learning Competency: Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different
mixtures according to uses and availability of materials.
Code: S7MT-Id-3
Learning Target/s:
1. Recognize the given that can be used to compute for the concentration of a solution;
2. Answer a given problem using the correct formula in finding the percent by volume of a
solution; and
3. List the correct answer to a given problem using the correct formula in finding the
concentration of a solution.

Concept Notes

Volume of solution = volume of solute + volume of solvent

Volume percent of solute = volume of solute x 100

volume of solution

Volume percent of solvent = volume of solvent x 100

volume of solution

Example:
1. A solution is prepared with 15 mL of ethyl alcohol in 50 grams of water. Compute for the
volume percent of the solute.

Given:
Volume of solute = 15 mL ethyl alcohol Volume of solvent = 50 mL water
Required:
Volume percent of solute
Solution:
Volume of solution = volume of solute + volume of solvent
= 15 mL + 50 mL
Volume of solution = 65 mL
Volume percent of solute = volume of solute x 100
volume of solution
= 15 mL x 100
65 mL
= (0.2308)(100)
Volume percent of solute = 23.08 %

2. From the same given problem, compute for the volume percent of solvent.

Given:
Volume of solute = 15 mL ethyl alcohol Volume of solvent = 50 mL water
Required:
Volume percent of solute
Solution:
Volume of solution = volume of solute + volume of solvent
= 15 mL + 50 mL
Volume of solution = 65 mL
Volume percent of solvent = volume of solvent x 100
volume of solution
= 50 mL x 100
65 mL
= (0.7692)(100)
Volume percent of solvent = 76.92 %

To check:
Simply add the mass percent of your solute and solvent. You should always be getting a
100% solution.
23.08 + 76.92 = 100
