Calcium Acetate

1. Calcium acetate is used to treat hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. It works by replacing calcium and maintaining calcium levels. 2. Common side effects include constipation, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It should not be used in patients with cancer, bone metastases, ventricular fibrillation or hypercalcemia. 3. Nurses should inform patients to take calcium with food and water, report any side effects, and not to take it with foods that may interfere with absorption like rhubarb or bran.
