Lesson Plan for MAPEH 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the musical characteristics of representative music selections from
the lowlands of Luzon;
2. Analyze the musical elements of some Lowland vocal and instrumental
music selections; and
3. Explain the distinguishing characteristics of representative Philippine
music selections from Luzon in relation to its culture and geography.

A. Motivation
1. Ask the students if they have ever experience how to be serenade
by someone.
2. Let the answer of the students be the springboard for discussion.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Pre-activity: Picture Analysis
In this activity students should be able understand the
secular music during the Spanish Colonization.
Directions:
1. Show to the class some pictures depicting the culture of
early Filipinos during the Spanish Colonization
2. Ask the students to analyze the pictures and give their
understanding about it.
3. Impress upon the students that the Filipinos, way back, were
already romantics, with their very musical way of expressing their
love.
2. Discussion/Concept Formation:
a) The students should be able to identify the different secular
music during the Spanish Colonization.
b) Let the students emphasize the relationship of music and the
culture of early Filipinos.

C. Generalizations:
The secular music of the lowlands of Luzon reflects the impact of
the Spanish colonization which lasted for almost three centuries. The
music bears influences of Spanish culture and music and serves as
reflections of that era, as seen in the messages of the songs. These
songs, mostly about love of a man for a woman, have deeper meaning for
the Filipinos at that time.
D. Valuing/Application:
The man's longing for the love of a woman is transformed into the
country's love and longing for a free Philippines, as embodied in a woman.
As time passes by, these traditions most of which take place in the less
urban areas or on the stages for cultural purposes, get less and less
attention, but we are not wanting in cultural groups who advocate
continuance of these tradition.

IV. Evaluation:
Explain the relationship of secular music to the culture of the early Filipinos
during the Spanish era.
