Overpopulation
Overpopulation
Overpopulation refers to a population which exceeds its sustainable size within a particular
environment or habitat (Biology Dictionary). In a modern world, we cannot deny the fact that
population is rapidly growing as the time goes by. In fact, as stated on the book entitled "The
Contemporary World", there are 7.4 billions people in the whole world as of 2019, and estimated to
increase the number as 9.5 billions in 2050. This extremely expansion of population will lead to different
impacts towards our society, whether a treat as development or regression. According to Surbhi S,
"Based on the density of population, development, amenities, employment opportunities, education,
etc. human settlement is majorly divided into two categories; Urban and Rural. Urban refers to a human
settlement where the rate of urbanisation and industrialisation is high. On the other hand, in a rural
settlement, is one where the rate of urbanisation is quite slow." But what will happen if these two
opposite characteristic of society become overpopulated?
As what stated on the online essay, "Several people move from the city to a farm to get away from
the hustle and bustle. Likewise, some farmers have traded in their tractors and animals to live a fast
paced city life". Variety of insight flowing among individuals ,groups, or organizations about the
advantage and disadvantages of overpopulation in rural and urban area. It is beneficial for a rural
community to become pupulated so there will be someone who could take care on their agricultural
crops if ever their parents or grand parents will pass away ( The Contemporary World). On the other
hand, overpopulation also brings a havy problem carried by the shoulders of the commmunity, and the
reason why inequality does exist.
In the our province in lanao del norte, specifically in Kolambugan, not all people can aquire the
benifits and programs implemented by the government. Example, the program "Bigay Sakayan" which
aims to provide free small sailboats among farmers to have a better trip on sea in relation to their
livelihod, but not all farmers guaranteed that service. Another problem is lack of education. In barangay
Sambuco, under the municipality of kolambugan, not all children can accommodate going to school due
to high populaation that results to shortage of school institutions and educators on the area. Aaccording
to Sarah Murray (27 Jul 2015), a Journalist and Economist says, “Education leads to lower birth rates and
slows population growth. In Bangladesh, for instance, used communications and awareness-raising to
change people’s attitudes to family size and to increase the use of contraceptives among married
women. As a result, fertility decreased from an average of more than 6 children per woman in 1975 to
slightly more than 3 today". Therefore without education, the population of rural area might increase
results to poverty.
Overpopulation in urban communities are much appreciated than rural areas,.According to the
Washington Post, overpopulation can be beneficial because the more people there are, the more the
information economy will grow. For example, more people do more jobs, which causes innovation.
People produce more art and create more technology. Another benefit is that overpopulation leads to
T
urbanization, and as a result, cities expand. According to an infographic designed by EyeCandy, only
countries with high levels of urbanization reach significant economic growth and income levels.
EyeCandy also points out that overpopulation stimulates an improved standard of living. The bigger a
population in a country, the bigger the domestic market of that country. More people are able to work,
which means that products are manufactured at cheaper costs and labor costs are lower, which in turn
make these products more affordable to the general population. This creates economies of scale
because volume increases and cost per unit decreases.Evidence of the benefit of overpopulation to
economic growth can be seen in the economies of both China and India, which are economically
flourishing despite their large populations.
In every action we take , there is always have a consequence. Overpopulation have also
disadvantages. First is terrorism. According to the study of James M. Lutz and Brenda J. Lutz entitled
"The Ambiguous Effect of Population Size on the Prevalence of Terrorism" says that, "Absolute
population size has been proposed as one factor that encourages terrorism since large states have more
difficulty maintaining security". Another one is inequality. Since a lot of opportunities in megacities that
is highy urbanized, the employment are not equally distributed due to the migrants who have are
educated enough compared to the local residents ( The Contimporary World). According to a website
named Active and Sustainabibility ,"high number of workers exist for a limited number of vacancies and
this seems destined to lead to high rates of joblessness in the future. This in turn could provoke rising
crime and social revolt". Also the environmental degradation is always present. Due to a lot of factories,
establishment, andavence lifestyle and other factors that wil contribute to global warming, the earth
was slowly melting because of high temperature which results to vaariety of environmental disasters
such us typhoons.
Overpopulation is unstoppable, but can be control or minimize. In fact, some governments have
attempted to use legislation to limit the number of children born. Tempting as it is, enforcing a “one
child” policy does not work — as the experience of China shows, it turns a problem of population growth
into one of an ageing society. Which I highly against for. Though my perspective is influenced by my
religion, i will stand that having only one child is a solution to the upgrowing number of people. It's just a
matter of control among the government to create fairness and be productive enough to create a beter
place to live in. Of course, the people must have a mindset of being contented. We must control our
sexual desires and help the government to solve this kind of dilemma for the living of new young
generation next to us.
